Thank you for sharing your story. I am much older than you (50...eek) and have been through a few career lifetimes already, your advice is quite inspiring. I like that you included the idea to ask yourself why you want to start a shop, blog, etc. I've been selling vintage and antiques online since 1998, as a side gig, then several years ago concentrated on Etsy. I was working in TV production and growing more and more unhappy working 60+ hrs a week plus the long commute, not to mention the egos involved. That's when I decided to work in the non-profit arts world. During that 8 years I was able to work various positions including working from home a good bit. That's what made it clear that working from home for someone else was not for me. Now after 5 years of taking care of ailing parents (while working full time) and then their estates, along with taking time to clear my head I know that I want to put all of my energy into my own business. My first step was to rent a PO Box. I know it sounds insane that I had an online store since the '90s and no PO Box but I just figured what the heck, why spend the money. I already have all of my other tools in place I just need to use them. ;) (PS - damn, I think I just blew a potential blog post here ;)

When I first saw this video was 40 minutes long I thought there was no way I'd end up watching the whole thing; but I did! I should've known better since you are always so well-spoken, informative and concise. Thank you for sharing your story. I actually needed to hear this today since I've (privately) dedicated myself to a strict posting schedule this month as a first move in taking my KZbin content more seriously.

Alexis thank you for this wonderful video. I really believe in what you said about how people are suddenly jumping into the entrepreneural world trying to sell handmade planner things, planners, etc. I do believe though it seems wonderful many are just jumping in because "everyone" is doing it not realizing that its not a cookie cutter type of concept. It take work and dedication and what gets to me the most is people really don't get it and just expect that everything will be handed on a silver platter. Your video really is inspiring but also helped me release some of my "anger(?)" over how to many people are just trying to do businesses because it's the trend and they believe money will fall straight in their lap. Thank you again Alexis I really feel invigorated after watching your amazing video.

Thank you so much for this video. You honestly touched on several of the things that I have interest in. You built the foundation that I wanted to question but was not sure where to go to get the information. I know the answers has to come from within but you don't know what you don't know. Who better to get this type of information from. Several things really stuck out in my mind so I went back and watched the video a second time so I could take notes. I am truly impressed!! What a way to start a Monday morning!! This is great especially when it hits home. Thank you, thank you.

Hi Alexis! Thanks for your planning process and also your experience! I recently left a comment on a recent blogpost in this series and enjoyed the video as well. I will definitely following these series along as I make the jump to help my husband run his woodworking business. I have been an employee for many years and managed projects at work but I've been doing a lot of soul searching recently and realized that I want to live a life where I am able to involve my children in my work. I will never be able to take my kids into the office. However, they have spent many hours at the shop with my husband. Also, as a business owner you are on control of your income potential. If you're willing to put in the time and effort you reap the reward. At work I bend over backward for a set salary or an incremental increase. And truthfully, after paying the babysitter, my take home pay is measly. Anyway, to prepare for this jump, I have been focusing on learning about the habits of successful entrepreneurs including time management, staying focused, running a business, how to transition a brick and mortar business into the social media landscape. And as I mentioned in the comment, the way I started my initiative is by growing my hobby IG account @planner_joy. It marked the first time I started something on my own and stuck with it. That's where I came across your account, btw.

Thanks for sharing your story, Alexis. Your dreams of working in the art world was also mine. I ended up switching from art history in college and now am just studying history in general. I'd eventually love to work in the museum world, but there will always be that part of me that wants to work for an auction house. I've been watching for awhile but first time commenting. I felt compelled to comment because what you said regarding the closest people to us knowing us best is SO TRUE. My mother told me that I would be a "computer guru" when I was 12 years old. I didn't believe her and now 17 years later, I am getting a PhD in this area. My mom passed away almost ten years ago and so I haven't thought about her encouragement in awhile. Your video reminded me of this.

But I am curious, aside from my blog me and my fiancé have decided to start a fitness website but we are sorta afraid of jumping into the business end because taxes/legal stuff - its unknown to us because we have never dealt with it before. The way you describe how the universe let everything fall in place as long as you strive for it is something i believe strongly - have you even seen "The Secret"?

Michelle Wolf Yes I have seen the Secret many years ago. I wouldn't say my view of how the universe works is as cut and dry as that, but I do believe in manifesting your reality to a certain degree.

Alexis - I'm enjoying your videos, and this is really helpful. I've been challenged to find time to develop my own business while working full time, could you talk a little more about how you planned your time and kept up your motivation while you were still working a regular job? I also wondered if the year at a glance insert is available anywhere. Thanks!

This was a fantastic video! Over the years I've been told over an over what my strengths are from family and friends and I've just not been listening. Lol. I think I've been to chicken to put myself out there. Lately I've been toying with the idea of starting an etsy shop selling my fabric midori's, but I don't want to get lost in a crowd when I know I have my own unique style. My parents are very successful entrepreneurs and have taught me everything I could want about that, but taking the plunge for myself seems really scary. Did you ever feel the same way?! Sorry for the novel!

I would be very interested in the video on doing business as a side line. Maybe you have already posted it. I will check. I have a lot of irons in the fire at the moment but I have a lot of creativity and have had a challenge bringing it all together and making it work for me. Maybe it is focusing on my brand. I would love to hear more about that. Thanks so much for putting yourself out there.

Hi Alexis, My name is Lauren, and I'm a new subscriber. I discovered your channel through Paper&Glam. Thanks Lisamarie!!! I find your content so relatable, I can't wait to go through the archives and watch all the videos I've missed until now! I have a few questions for you if that's okay. Firstly, what are some tips you have for staying focused and motivated throughout the work day/week? I also work from home, and I'm finding it difficult to balance my work and personal life. For example, I love the flexibility of working from home; however, I'm finding it difficult to balance. I have this freedom to take breaks throughout the day and meet friends for lunch, or grab a coffee, but I've noticed it can really effect my productivity. Any advice? Thanks! - Lauren

Lauren Lambert Welcome Lauren! I am so glad to hear you are relating to me and my content! You know what, those are some really awesome questions and I am thinking this may need to be a topic for a whole video! In the meantime I will give you some of my tips off the cuff! 1- Set up a dedicated office space. 2- Set break times for yourself and stick to only those times to do personal errands or run out for lunch etc. 3- Turn off all distractions (tv, personal phone, etc) so you can focus on your work while you are in work mode. I'm sure I will be able to come up with more tips for the future video, but I hope this helps for now! Thanks so much for joining my community and I look forward to seeing you in the comments in future videos!

this was GREAT, thanks so much for the advice. Would it be possible, down the road, to do a video on the nitty gritty of the financial part of the business? i.e. taxes, fees, etc.?? i've seen many a "how to start your own business" videos, but no one ever tells you about "unattractive" stuff. thanks!!

lynnette corrales To be honest, taxes are a very tricky subject, mainly because they differ by your business and the state and country you live in. I may touch on this topic in the future in a very general sense, but getting specific is going to be difficult since it isn't a one size fits all topic.

Francine Rollin Thank you so much Francine for you constant support! Online business certainly isn't for everyone, but I am glad to share my knowledge with my community! As for the number of hours I put in a day, its very hard to say since I don't really pay attention to it myself. I just sort of work all hours of the day and night as inspiration strikes and projects need to be completed!

I recently found your channel and I just love watching you! You are so articulate and well spoken. Thanks to you I am now part of the journal community... I received my websters pages planner on Thursday and I love it! 😃 I would love your opinion...Given the over saturation of videos on KZbin I believe that it is incredibly difficult to depend on KZbin as a new career unless you truly have that "something special". Would you agree? I have a question for you... What sorority are you in? I am an ΑΔΠ alumnae and always wondered if you were because of all of the 💎's

Annette Van Dyke Welcome to my channel Annette! I hope you enjoy your new planner!! As for you question about KZbin, I would say that I do not believe the over saturation of videos is a deterrent, in fact, in my mind, its actually a big positive. The more people out there making videos on a specific subject (like planning for example) the more eyeballs it will inevitably draw to your channel and videos. I know it may seem like its hard to grow a channel and build an audience on youtube, but standing out is really just a matter of creating value in your content and delivering it in a high quality package! I am an Alpha Phi! I just like diamonds since my brand is called Strange & Charmed!

Wow you are so super organised, sometimes Alexis I plan really well but don't stick to it. Any advise to get me more motivated ? I'm quite poorly long term and suffer a lot of pain. Being more motivated & getting sorted out is really important. It's just difficult to get going 😔. Any help you can give me would be great I follow you here and on IG etc... Thanks Hun xxx

Di McNally My advice for getting and staying motivated would be to bribe yourself. That always seems to work with me. Example, you can buy this planner once you have done this action that is very important. At this point on most days I wake up and feel motivated enough to get work done, but sometimes I need to bribe myself. I also have a great group of girlfriends who inspire me with what they do and that makes me want to work harder.
