62 years old and your analogy of replacing discipline with JOY was such a lightbulb moment! Thank you!!

Lightbulb moment for me, too, and I just turned 70!! Feel 50, still working and not slowing down. I have been using planner after planner since the 1980s when the Franklin Planner appeared and changed the planner world and yet I continued to struggle trying to “get it right” all these years. Seeing this idea of joy vs. discipline is life-changing - for my planner use as well as looking at my work projects and other tasks. Just amazing! One little word.

This video dropped at the PERFECT time! 2023 was a year of "planning crisis" for me; I tried so many different styles of planners and planning systems, and I realized at the end of the day that I want my planning process to just be SIMPLE. I add decor here n there, but I'm definitely leaning more towards the functional side of things. And I love the elements of planning you included in this video, especially the purpose. It's been a while since I've reflected on the purpose of my planning, and my response to this is that I want my planning system to help me organize dates/times of all events/work shifts/appointments/due dates/etc. to help prevent overwhelm. Even when it looks like there's a lot to track, it's better for me to have it all out on paper than keeping it stuck in my head or else I WILL forget about it. Thanks for an awesome video Tori!

Thank you SO MUCH for this feedback. I agree, I think 2023 was definitely the year of experimentation and planner wandering lol. I am with you, I think a lot of us are ready for simplicity this year. Thank you for being here

Something that I have in the 3 years I have been journaling is timing is everything. I set a schedule for myself to at least go to my journal while I'm having my morning coffee. It's a great check in time for how I really felt how yesterday went. It's also the perfect time to see how I feel on how I am approaching the day. Am I anxious, angry, content, or just foggy. I have found when I do this it's easier to know why arising events make me feel such a way. Also when I first started out and "What do I even write ?" I would just start with the date, time, weather, and mood. It's almost like being in school again and writing your name and date at the top of the page. I have found once I start writing it's easier to keep going. I completely agree with you, there needs to be joy. Also a personal reward system is great. This goes right back to how many of us experienced grade school with gold stars and maybe even getting a prize out of a box at the weeks even for good behavior. It does not have to be expensive but getting your favorite drink or treat after meeting your goals make you appreciate the treat and the feel of accomplishment is a huge dopamine hit.

you are so right timing can be sooo helpful and for me it feels almost meditative. I really like how you put that the morning is a good check in time for the day ahead and reflection for the time past. Thank you for sharing

Thank you Tori for your video. I have been using planners for more than 10 years and still I had a lightbulb moment as I listened to you. As it's planner season I'm doing my rounds of checking out all the videos on planner thoughts and planner plans etc, and I have been very unsatisfied with my planner usage this year so inspiration is much needed. As I heard you I could pinpoint my purpose for my planners has always been for productivity. But I realise I'm plenty productive! I do my job well enough and do not cause troubles for others. So actually in this planner fever dream that I am chasing, I am simply trying to avoid moments where I suddenly recall something I need to do, because it brings about anxiety and fear that I coukd have forgotten it! So I don't need consistency or discipline or joy per se, but I need to find a way such that I have none of those moments where I may forget things BC I don't like it. And my answer may not lie in a paper planner. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughtful thoughts ❤

Thank you so much for sharing! I am so happy you were able to take something from this, even if that's not using a paper planner anymore! I love having those lightbulb moments too and I think they can offer a lot of relief and clarity. Thank you for being here

Thank you so much! I actually got most of them (except engagement ring) from a local crystal shop. I definitely recommend visiting one if you have one where you live. The always end up being really affordable too!
