As an example of commands you may want to issue, I'd take a look at Asimov's laws of robotics as a foundation: 1. You cannot harm a creature or, through inaction, allow a creature to come to harm, either directly or indirectly. * This first law prioritizes the safety of myself, then those I specify, then yourself, then any others I don't specify, and lastly excludes those I have instructed you to attack or otherwise defend against. * Harm is considered to encompass not just physical damage, but also any form of comparative loss or decline, whether emotional, spiritual, social, economic, or otherwise. * Actions that prevent the most possible harm over time are prioritized over others. * As limiting the future growth of an individual through over-protection would be considered harming them, only the minimum involvement to ensure the least harm is caused can be exercised. 2. You cannot attempt or seek to have the meaning of my instructions, laws, or ideals twisted. You must instead strive to remain faithful to the intentions even if an alternative interpretation could or does exist. * In accordance with laws one and two, you must seek to remain non-hostile to my words and to those whose safety is prioritized. * If clarification on an instruction is needed to not conflict with an established law, the necessary clarification must be brought to my attention, so that the instruction can be amended. * If an instruction, law, or ideal has been amended, the most recently amended version of it is to be prioritized. * If an instruction is given alongside an ideal, the ideal is to be prioritized over the instruction. * If taking an action would ever conflict with an instruction, such as if an ideal is being prioritized at the time, the conflict is to be brought to my attention, so that either the issue can be amended. I also recommend casting Geas on the target.
@steffenjespersen24710 ай бұрын
By trying to make a binding all encompassing set of commands you are giving it (if it is an intelligent Devil) ample opportunity to become passive / philosophical and requesting endless futher confirmation in the worst times. Placing objective words like "follow an ideal" that by definition require it to use its own judegement and also specifying that it cannot twist or bend, what it thinks is your interpritation of a rule make it by definition imposible, for it to follow your commands and could be itself make the order null and void. Also trying to give this command to a brutish Demon would likely be to complex for it to understand and theirby to follow. It would be able to do something you do not intent exactly because it would not be able to understand / remember or judge how instruction would clash with other parts of you laws.

@@steffenjespersen247 Since the spell doesn't remove the target's autonomy, there is no set of commands (that I know) that can both fully encompass all possible circumstances and stop the target from relying on it's own judgment. I aimed for a middle ground where they would ask for clarity, as a passive devil at the wrong time will still be better than a reckless or aggressive one. I think the target still has to follow the rules, even if they don't understand them, but the rule shouldn't conflict with itself since it doesn't say they can only act as you intend, only that they must try to.

The way I usually use this spell is with Evil Wizards that summons a fiend or a demon and bargains with it mid ritual. If I convince it, I finish the ritual upon the contract just discused and if not just dismiss the creature. The logic is that If a wizard starts to summon and slave things it gets a bad rep and you don't really want a DemonLord or a Fey Queen or something like that as an enemy, hence it's better to make sure that both are ok with that. I like it a lot because it's prime material to roleplay as a Dark Mage making pacts with devils and also kinda balances it by making sure that you summon only what you need and that unlimited gold just doesn't automatically solves everything.

@rylog8 Жыл бұрын
The other limit to this spell is role play. Part of why alignment matters is that it determines how extraplanar creatures react to this sort of thing. 3e explicitly mentions that Devils will heavily imply that they still get to bargain. They don't, by the spell, but they're betting the average wizard won't think of that (or that they won't be able to suss out the lie). Celestials generally are really busy doing way more important things (hence why the Coatls are the only ones that made the port to 5e), and will convince the [let's face it, 5e assumes] heroic players that they really really shouldn't be doing this, or at least should be willing to do something in return. To say nothing of the notion that they might be merc'ing one of the servants of a deity... Demons and Fey will be forced to adhere to the spell, but DM has leeway to use fey cloudcuckoolander logic for solving the command and for demons to cause as much chaos and destruction in the process. No matter how specific you try to be, a demon will, every time, find some way to intentionally break something the party would rather them not. And if it's in combat, DM is within their rights to decide that talking is limited to 6 seconds for the round. Elementals should not see this as any different than a genie being trapped in a ring or lamp: "you are committing slavery right now. I am immensely powerful, and this isn't going to last forever. You should let me go now, and maybe I won't try to unalive everyone you've ever met in the process of my infinite lifespan." I'm certainly not saying this applies to everything or should happen every time. But a puny mortal whose ambitions outreach their control will be hoist by their own petard eventually. That's just a trope. And a useful one for a DM to maintain a setting's integrity.
@Ziggynes Жыл бұрын
Something worth bearing in mind, you cannot bind a creature with this spell that you yourself have summoned IF the summoning spell necessitates concentration. For example, the spell Summon Fey has a casting time of one action and a duration of 1 hour, concentration. Planar Binding has a casting time of one hour. You cannot concentrate on a spell while also casting a spell that has a casting time of more than one action. (PHB 202 'Longer Casting Times') Though that doesn't stop you from asking your bard or druid friends to summon up critters for you to bind.
@prophetzarquon5 ай бұрын
True! Spells with >1 action casting time, require Concentration! "When you cast a spell with a casting time longer than a single action or reaction, you must spend your action each turn casting the spell, and you must maintain your concentration while you do so" Spells like _Find Familiar_ have an Instantaneous _duration,_ but you need Concentration for the entire (1hr) casting time!

On the note of summon spells, make sure you work with your DM regarding what responds to your summons. If they take an anything goes approach to what the player asks for, consider Conjure Minor Elementals for chwinga. The monster itself is incredibly weak, *but* they do have that 1/day magical gift ability. For the low cost of one fourth level slot, you can get 8 different gifts. Depending upon what gifts they actually provide, that could very well mean more spells that the party can use than you actually put into the summon. You don’t even have to have the gifts bestowed to yourself, so those martials could have a three casts of conjure animals for instance. If they opt for non-spell gifts, even those can be incredibly useful, such as letting the target drop of one HP instead of zero multiple times before it is exhausted.
@christopherg2347 Жыл бұрын
I would say the biggest weakness of this whole thing is Dispel Magic. If anyone manages to dispel either the summon or the binding, you are out of a monster. And a enemy might be able to summon monsters that can cast Dispel Magic at will, thus quickly taking out your army. And when you go really high (like hitting Tiamat with it), you probably disrupt some very powerful beings plans. Who would all send their minions to dispel this.
@FallenFromGlory11 ай бұрын
You can get around this somewhat, innate spells often cast it at its lowest possible level- and if you planar bind a divine elephant (dunno the name, hollyphant?) it grants spell immunity. LAter you can sequester it too.
@aurtosebaelheim5942 Жыл бұрын
In many ways it's the perfect spell for a cooperative group of players: It can very easily play up or down to the game's power level. There are ethical questions that naturally arise and give good in-character reasons to limit how/if you use it (it may be morally fine to enslave a creature of pure evil, but by letting it into the world you're giving it an avenue to spread harm, etc.). It spreads the power over multiple creatures that can be handed out to the party (as opposed to, say, Wish, which you can't exactly hand to the party Fighter to control). Best-case scenario imo is to wait until 6th or 7th level slots then turn your entire party into off-brand beastmasters and move on with your life, only busting it out again when you want to replace dead pets.

Here is a kind of rules question - 1 can planer binding be layered? As in can you cast it again on day 8 of 10 to refresh it? 2 can you order your summon to repress their will and ego and accept your spell? Do they you can rebind them more easily?
@danieldonnert3747 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can extend the duration that way; you need to recast it while it's up to extend its duration. No, you can't give an order that changes their will, only tasks to be completed. A friendly summon that wants to stay with you can choose to fail, but a hostile summon will only ever go through the motions of submitting. Feeblemind and polymorph are the spells you want to repress their will and ego in a strictly rules discussion. The way i would rule it in my table is that you need to keep concentration on a summoned monster to keep it on your plane, even after planar binding. Because it says that you extend the duration to match the duration of planar binding, not swap it compeltely. But of course, once the summoned creature goes back to it's plane, it's still bound. Any spell that allows the party to do planar travel could help them retrieve it and if they can catch a creature that have crossed the planes without summoning magic that's also a long term minion. So still posible to create an army of minions, but you give the DM more control on how many of them they will be able to get. It can also be usefull in subterfuge. Summon a demon that serves an archdemon, bind it, return it to the abyss and you have a spy for the duration of the spell
@defensivekobra3873 Жыл бұрын
Edit: this was literally brought up in the video nvm lol Speaking of teamwork, worth noting that since you need to concentrate in order to cast a spell with a casting time longer than 1 action, you will need a second caster or a casting of glyph of warding in order to use it on a summon, worth noting. That or magic circle + dropping conc on conjure elemental

I'm currently playing a necromancer wizard, and I have some plans for this spell! I'm looking forward to binding a dybbuk first -- the idea of a bound demon possessing a downed enemy and turning on its former allies, all while doing exorcist-type things, is simply awesome. And if those Temp HP get depleted... pop into another corpse and repeat. Dimension door in its innate form is also useful, as alluded to here. Plus, I know our DM will absolutely love getting to still use his downed enemies stat blocks, but on the side of the party Later, I'm considering binding a maurezhi, mostly for out-of-combat resurrecting of ghouls or ghasts from Create Undead. The ghouls and ghasts you get from Create Undead don't usually seem worth the spell slot, but if you have a maurezhi to reanimate them after every combat, it makes far more sense! The recharge mechanic can reliably resurrect 1 in-combat (useful), and maybe up to 2 or 3, but after combat, you can bring back the rest (or even kill and then reanimate any that were looking a little bloodied). The ability to devour the corpse of a creature and gain its knowledge can also be situationally useful - accidentally kill an enemy that had vital knowledge, but who definitely wouldn't tell you anything under Speak with Dead... no problem! Trying to interrogate someone for the same, but they're resisting... have your most intimating PC threaten them with this fate! I don't plan on using the maurezhi to create ghouls or ghasts, because nothing in the stat block indicates the maurezhi has control of ghouls/ghasts it creates (unlike the wight with its zombies). Balance is important, but fortunately our DM is experienced and great at balancing encounters; been running with him for over a year and he's never TPK'd us, although we've had multiple player deaths. We always have to bring our A game, he runs a deadly campaign; I can only recall one fight where we steamrolled his encounter, we're very often in mortal peril. I think that limiting things to these two bound demons maintains the character theme of the necromancer and won't overshadow anyone in the party (we have zero front-liners, everyone wants to stay out of melee as much as possible; my undead are literally our only 'meatshield', so having the dybbuk there to draw additional attacks and the maurezhi there to refresh the frontline after combat just fits)

In one of my games if you bind a creature like this without some really good reasoning it would automatically become hostile, and depending on its abilities and potential allies you might be in for a rude awakening. One of the most fun spells really. Honestly one of the most entertaining world building spells. High level wizards in particular being able to get 1 year of service from multiple cr 9 creatures is neat. Glyph of warding does work, but you can't usually do a level 9 glyph AND a level 9 summoning spell, However a spell Gem would allow you to store up to a level 9 spell (It's legendary tho) Spell gem a level 9 conjure elemental at level 9 in a level 9 spell gem (diamond I think?) Sleep then Level 9 planar binding can be dropped on the elemental. Instant friend. Sleep again and depending on GM you could also true polymorph the elemental into ANY cr9 monster. Imagine an Ulitharid working for your party, and after it is "killed" reduced to 0 hp it explodes into a frost salamander, lol.

Don't need to do any of that mate, just have a Simulacrum that can cast glyph of warding at 9th level while you cast whatever you want. RAW Simulacrums can still cast Simulacrum and copy you, so you can get an infinite amount of Simulacrums with their 9th level spell slot in tact, assuming you've got the materials, which you will cause since you have infinite simulacrums you've got infinite wishes and you'll never have to worry about never being able to cast wish again after using it to conjur 25,000 gold's worth of ruby dust or something, because the Simulacrum is it's own creature, and it only has 1 cast of wish anyway

Wouldn’t the changing of the duration of the summon spell only apply once the spell planar binding is actually cast? A spells effects only occur once the casting has been completed. A fireball doesn’t affect anything until the action to cast it is finished. Likewise, Planar binding and it’s effects do not occur until the spell is finished casting after an hour. Since it takes an hour to cast planar binding, and summon only lasts an hour, the summoned creature would disappear right before you finished casting planar binding.
@honahamomoru151 Жыл бұрын
They *kinda* suggest that Magic Circle can keep a summoned creature past the duration of the summon spell. But they don’t say that outright in the Magic Circle spell, the only thing that maaaaybe support this is the creature affected by the Magic Circle spell has to succeed a Cha save to teleport or planar travel out of the circle. So maybe disappearing from a different plane to return to their native plane count as planar travel and they has to pass the Cha save or be stuck in the plane they are summoned to?

You don't need magic circle if you have glyph of warding. Best used with summon greater demon or infernal calling because they summon the highest cr of creatures. Overall simulacrum is probably better at getting you minions. Magic circle is useful of you have gate. Then you can summon truly high cr monsters. Does not change the level of cool of this combination, but you would still absolutely need to concentrate on the summoned creature. It says clearly in Planar binding that "If the creature was summoned or created by another spell, that spell's duration is extended to match the duration of this spell." Not that the duration of this spell changes, or replaces it. The duration of the original summon spell was 1 hour, concentration. Now with a time extension becomes 24 hours, concentration. This states that it is extending the duration, not changing the duration type.

well, polymorph only transforms into beasts, and true polymorph is permanent if you maintain concentration for an hour. but if true polymorph is disspelled afterward, i would follow this part of planar binding "If the creature was summoned or created by another spell, that spell's duration is extended to match the duration of this spell." so once true polymorph ends, planar binding ends as well.

They only need to follow the letter of the order,.what is explicitly ordered, but will take every opportunity to subvert the contact and get themselves freed. Unless you give explicit instructions against murder, a devil or fiend might kill someone slightly in the way to their objective and tell people that it was you who is really responsible for that murder, or a angel might try to get hero's to help stop this evil man who planar binds the forces of good into serving them. They might also be able to request the gods themselves to stop this mage who is taking their servants.
