I am a skydiver and FAA senior parachute rigger. Never seen a pilot wear a sport rig before, these have two parachutes, a main and reserve (for intentional jumping). Pilots wear a pilot rig, which has one round parachute (emergency use only) and is comfortable to wear for hours. The reasonable conclusion? Trevor is not a pilot, or won't be one for long.

I'm not sure I've seen a GA pilot even wear a parachute... I mean yeah exhibition pilots and legitimate test flights maybe. Most people just outfit their plane with a chute if they're worried about it but those are typically aircraft with high stall speeds... IMO the only time bailing would even be a "reasonable" option would be a fire or catastrophic structural failure and it's not like getting out would be easy in either of those situations.

One thing my instructor(s) impressed upon me was - always wear a parachute and make sure you have a selfie stick with you when you jump out. Oh, and make sure you don’t make a mayday call, and always hike over to the crashed plane to get the cameras.

My experience: 22,000 plus hours. Airline pilot. Flying everything from small airplanes through large airliners. My opinion: This was totally a hoax, he needs to be in jail. FAA needs to pull his FAA pilots license. If he even has one. In addition to endangering others, he destroyed a beautiful 1940 Taylorcraft. And he should pay to remove the wreckage and restore the crash site to it's natural state. A parachute is not normal flying that type of aircraft. Especially not that type of parachute. I bet he put minimum fuel in the aircraft. So there would be no fire. And flew it to a roughly planned location, where the airplane ran out of fuel. And then there was the planned crash. FAA will most certainly investigate this and they will determine the cause. And hopefully punish this guy! There could well be evidence he intentionally departed without enough fuel. Was there a VFR flight plan? While not required any competent pilot would file one flying over the mountains in a single engine aircraft. What was his intended destination? I bet this was a poorly thought out stunt, while carrying his buddies ashes, for a final "high risk" send off.
@AV4Life
@AV4Life 2 жыл бұрын
Not only that, any single-engine pilot knows the procedure for this. It’s not like the airplane just falls out of the sky after engine failure… You establish best glide, select forced landing area, and run through your engine restart checklist. During your route of flight, you always make sure you have a flat place to land the aircraft and adjust the flight plan to accommodate that. You nailed it though. Any taildragger pilots feel free to correct me as I don’t fly a tailwheel aircraft in particular.

Ya, this is so clearly staged. Not even bothering to call out an emergency on the radio??? I follow a number of other plane/pilot video channels, and they discuss at great lengths the procedures that pilots are trained to do if an engine failure or any sort of aircraft malfunction occurs-- and jumping out with a video camera rolling as the first response, is not in any way a standard procedure... I'm glad he is ok, but this crosses the line about endangering others, property or starting a forest fire. Probably doesn't help the image and reputation of small plane enthusiast pilots either...
@BuzzyStreet

It's not like flying a commercial jet where you are in contact with various control centers along your route. If you're a general aviation pilot flying in visual conditions and have not filed a flight plan or requested flight following, you are not in contact with anyone until you enter their airspace. You can fly all over the country without ever having to talk to anyone at all. If you're close enough to an airport that you intend to make an emergency landing at that location, you would contact the tower, declare an emergency and ask for clearance to land. Or, if you are entering a controlled area, you would radio the appropriate control center so they can move everyone out of your way. If you lose your engine flying over the mountains at 5,500 feet in a Taylorcraft, honey, you're on your own.
@craigrobertson8476

@@BuzzyStreet He didn't even attempt to use 121.5 to make a distress call. Emergency locator beacons can be tracked anywhere in the world since they use GPS, its not like a routine flight when you have to jump out of your plane. If you're in the middle of nowhere that is the exact time you'd want to make a distress call since it is less likely someone spots your plane crashing. Plus you should always tell someone where you are going so they can expect your safe arrival even if it's your mom or friend. It doesn't need to be a commercial plane for the pilot to operate the aircraft safely.

What a waste of a perfectly good airplane : ( I soloed in a Taylorcraft L2 and have a great fondness for all things Taylorcraft. This was a total stunt. If there's one single-engine airplane that takes the prize for what-you-want-to-be-flying-when-your-engine-quits, it's a Taylorcraft. The damn things glide forever and have a stall speed (the speed at which the wing loses lift capability) of around 45mph. Provided you were flying at the proper altitude, you have a LONG time to identify a landing spot. Much as I hated to do it, I watched part of the video, specifically, the part where his engine "quits". At 2:42 you can see that the pilot's door is cracked open BEFORE the engine stops. These door mechanisms can be a pain to open when you're on the ground, so I can see why he'd want to open the door latch before he needed to. Also, there is a view into the cockpit from the wing @ 2:50. You can see the pilot working the controls - pulling back on the control yoke, then forward, then back. There's only one reason for him to be pulling back on the elevator, and that's to slow the plane down. In an engine out, the first priority is to maintain your airspeed and altitude, not slow down. He's slowing down to make it easier to open the door.
@svyt
@svyt 2 жыл бұрын
Also, my immediate thought: slowing the aircraft sufficiently allows the prop to stop turning, which makes for much more dramatic video of an "engine stopping", for non-aviators. (Note that later, when the aircraft is gliding down on its own, the prop is happily windmilling, meaning the engine "failure" wasn't a thrown rod, or some kind of seizure or that sort of thing.)
@SpecialEDy
@SpecialEDy 2 жыл бұрын
@Sam R-A it would of been a lot cooler if he stalled it really hard before he jumped out. Missed opportunity for more dramatic effect.
@svyt
@svyt 2 жыл бұрын
@Sam R-A Fair point - I'm with you. Along that same theme of "I don't think this strongly proves anything," there are those who say he wanted to hike to the plane to change the position of the mags, master, and/or mixture... In case of a probable crash, a sensible pilot really thinking ahead (I know... but go with me here) would shut down the mags and master and pull the mixture to cutoff in the final stage of an off-field landing to minimize fire potential, so it's arguable that whichever way the switches and mixture ended up in the wreckage, you could make a realistic excuse for it: if they're were "on" at the time of the crash, "well, I didn't think to secure them in the air before bailing out." (bad judgement, but believable.) If they're "off," then you make yourself sound good by saying, "in consideration that the plane would crash somewhere, for maximum safety, I secured it by turning off magnetos and master and pulling the mixture before I bailed out." In other words, I don't think the position of the switches is particularly probative as to the question of whether it was a hoax. And like you, in spite of these few "to be fair..." type points, I still think that there is much evidence stacked up in a direction which indicates a scripted bailout.
@beevie4081
@beevie4081 2 жыл бұрын
@@svyt and then a final "to be fair" point is that grabbing cameras is probably the default habit for someone like him, rather than something he needs to remember. But I can't come up with much more grace than that; the overall scenario is still ridiculous.

As I understand it the aircraft - although still a wonderful aircraft to look at - was barely airworthy, if at all. It appears he had just acquired the plane. There are a couple of KZbin videos that point out that the engine on the airplane during Trevor's video was not the one it had when photos were last taken (he actually painted parts of it red so the engines would seem the same if you didn't examine them closely)... so what seems likely is that he either bought the airplane with an engine that wasn't suitable for flying, or he removed the original engine to put another on that was good enough / cheap enough to fly the plane to the scene of the crash. It seems very likely the airplane was selected for being an inexpensive way to cause a deliberate crash. I think he crashed it without any usable fuel left, in order to reduce fire risk. However I'm guessing he flew with the engine filled with the normal amount of oil. There was a chance the crash could have set the engine oil on fire (it didn't) and a gallon or two of engine oil is more than enough to start a wildfire.

My most significant item was that he could have negotiated his parachute drop into the dry river bed and avoided the risks of landing in brush on the steep hill. He clearly wanted to get back to the crashed plane and did not prioritize his own safety.

Anyone that makes money off of youtube videos would prioritize getting the footage over safety of himself. If he didn't go back to plane, he wouldn't have been able to make this video afterall. I used to fly a lot of aerobatics and always wore an emergency parachute. No one ever wanted to use one. For anyone wondering, I've been digging on this for a minute, through various sources. 1. He made our has of this Taylorcraft from somebody that already had it in bad shape. The aircraft was not flight worthy, and the previous owner could not justify the cost of fixing it and renewing its flight worthiness certificate. He is, in fact, a pilot as of right now. He has his own airplane that he flies, and operates off of a PPL. 2. Further, it appears he did some maintenance on the airframe (which he is not qualified to do,) and stripped the interior to bare minimums, potentially for fire prevention. Involved in this maintenance was painting over the tail numbers, as far as what's visible in his video. 3. He actually did pay for cleanup. Apparently, as I've heard, he payed for the aircraft, and for a helicopter to retrieve the aircraft and move it to an undisclosed location. 4. NTSB and (I think), also FAA, have made contact with the previous owner, as the ownership had not updated to Trevor, yet (things take time, it's okay.) This means that they are attempting an investigation into the cause, and (therefore) makes #3 highly illegal, as it would be considered tampering with evidence. 5. I forget his intended destination, but it was north by north east of his takeoff point. One could argue that his heading of (roughly) 095 would be off course, but another person brings up that he could have been trying to follow victor airways, which could explain why he went that way. 6. According to a bush plane channel, this aircraft basically has no electrical systems. This could mean no radio, though I'm unsure of that, but it does mean it's a Hand-Start prop. However, also from the same channel, the aircraft comes with zero checklists. This means (because the prop was still windmilling) the process for in-air restart would take three to ten seconds. 7. It's important to note that him having cameras in this case isn't odd. There are many KZbin channels dedicated to aviation that put cameras all around their aircraft, on the regular, to make videos. See, for example: Flight Chops, Trent Palmer, and many others. The same is done for paramotors, too, mostly filled by Tucker Gott, but there's others. That being said, the odd part is there being a selfie stick camera. That makes sense on a paramotor, but not in a plane. 8. Speaking of Cameras, note the camera on his side (visible from his dashboard camera) that would see out the nose, and the instrument panel. Odd how none of the emergency features views from that camera. 9. The only thing that could save him is if he had a TFT and permission from the FAA to ditch the plane while airborne. But, remember that part about it being over a national forest? I severely doubt a government branch would just say, "sure, go use a plane to screw up nature on federally protected land. Just don't have any fuel in it." The analysis was actually pretty great, and we'll informed. I enjoyed listening to this for sure. Heck, depending on your other content, you might have earned another subscriber.

With a little bit of math (3D geometry) and knowledge of the Taylorcraft BL-65... it's possible to calculate the AGL altitude of that flight with pretty damn good accuracy! Speaking of knowledge of the Taylorcraft BL-65... Many pilots have suggested that airplane has a typical glide ratio of at least 8:1. Now I don't know what the "safe minimum" altitude is for deploying a parachute... ...But given the airplane's glide ratio and estimates of its altitude at the time of engine "failure", The Internet seems to suggest this guy had LOTS of time to seek out emergency landing locations before the critical point at which a "bail vs. don't-bail" decision becomes decided for you. Not to mention, he was in free-fall for a long time before finally pulling the cord... which kind of proves that he could have bought himself far more time to seek out potential landing locations by gliding, before even jumping and deploying his parachute at the altitude where he did. Every possible defense thus far for the guy's actions is completely invalidated by other actions he committed during this incident.

That means he would have had an accomplice. It didn't look like the GoPro camera and I can't imagine that he pulled out a phone to shoot it while managing his GoPro and his chute. I also don't believe for a minute that he landed in brush. I think he landed in an open area and then taped himself jumping into a bush for effect. It was actually a well-executed video. @@rdizzy1 So he flew over a remote mountain range with a parachute, squirrel suit, 4 gopros, but didn't bother to take an HF handheld? Not to mention most pilots would have retrofitted a radio. That plane has been around decades lol

@@bengunderson712 This dude had a pilots license, sure, but was definitely not "a pilot". More of skydiver/extreme sports/adrenaline junkie that just happened to squeak by and get a pilots license only 1 year prior to this. Another video shows this exact plane, not just this model , but this very plane, and it is not retrofitted, has no electric, no radio, no antenna.

@@rdizzy1 Lol, well that sounds about right then. Pretty obvious he staged it. What a dumbass. It's a shame he crashed that plane, was beautiful. Thank God he didn't kill anyone at least. Hope he never gets his license back.

Great detail on what he should have done. I've known a few pilots and flown with one in a single engine plane. Once was during a training session where the person had enough hours to have a passenger and was covering emergency procedures. The instructor went over all the things you mentioned here. (They actually cut he engine and recovered. -- I don't know if those are the right terms, but I know the plane dropped like a roller coaster before he turned the engine back on.) FAA is probably going to take his license if not charge him. FAA doesn't mess around with crashes.
