A chiral carbon is attached to four different substituents. The molecule is said to be chiral when it has a chiral carbon and is optically active.
A plane of symmetry divides a molecule into two equal parts. Usually, when a molecule is chiral, it does not have a plane of symmetry and if it is achiral it has a plane of symmetry.
