My day at work was dominated by this fiasco. Took systems down to their knees. This was HUGE. Most systems are way too Mono-platform. This is a perfect example of why mission critical services NEED TO AVOID single point of failure. Deeply sorry? WTF? The Crowdstrike issue didn't effect Mac systems either, nor did it effect Linux systems, either desktop or server variants. Crowdstrike does have Mac and Linux versions of their agent, the corrupted file was only pushed to the Windows versions. This file wasn't pushed through Windows Update, it was pushed by Crowdstrike to their installed agents. Was neck deep in remediation for this most of Friday and Saturday. Fun stuff.

My local hair salon has stopped accepting card payments. They're now cash only. It's mainly due to increasing bank charges but it also makes sense when you look at incidents like this. The more digital we make things, the more vulnerable society becomes and the more easily we can be controlled.

I was working on the mess yesterday. The difference between being affected and not being affected as a CS customer was all down to timing. If your computer or server were on when the first version of that file was pushed, good luck. If your comp was off until after the fixed version came down the pipe then you were fine. Working from home suddenly backfires in this scenario. Much easier for IT to go around the building applying a fix. We went from thinking we dodged the bullet to realizing some of our servers and end users got borked. Then you add in the other stuff that can occur throughout the day and it just piled up.

I don't work in IT but i have a lot of personal knowledge and encounter a lot of computer systems thru work. Its gotten worse the last few years, almost no one has anyone working in house anymore, maybe 1 or 2 guys handing out hardware everything else is outsourced online to India. One huge company i worked at that dealt with electrical power, every time we had a software issue we had to report it to India, then they would email you back with a time and date for a Skype call where they would help you try and solve the problem. If that dint work they would send someone that was stationed in the country to come and physically look at it like the old in house IT guys used to do. The outsourcing to country's like India the last few years have gotten insane, but like with everything else it "works" until it doesn't, and no one cares until its to late.

If it was a corporate Linux server that's forced to have a product like that on it's Kernel and got a similar update it would have crashed just the same- null pointers in a kernel process executed on boot. They didn't roll the Linux update yet...
