John Hughes was filming "She's Having a Baby" with Kevin Bacon at the same time as he was doing "Trains, Planes and Automobiles". Bacon told him he thought it would be fun to do a cameo in "Trains" and since the opening scenes were filmed in New York City where Bacon was living at the time, they did it.

Same character as in the previous John Hughes film- She’s Having A Baby
@JeffKelly03
@JeffKelly03 8 ай бұрын
@@PHDiaz-vv7yo Is it technically the same character? I heard in a podcast recently that Hughes was shooting this movie and She's Having a Baby at basically the same time, and Bacon was essentially like, "Hey, I want to do a cameo in that movie too" so he put him in. I know this movie came out first (fall of 1987; She's Having a Baby came out early 1988), but the same podcast (I think it was Unspooled?) said that there's a scene where a scene from She's Having a Baby is playing on a TV.

Your question about weather disrupting travel…as others have pointed out, Thanksgiving holiday week is the busiest travel days of the year in the US and any significant storm in a major hub like Chicago can and does have a chain reaction around the country. Winter weather can affect Thanksgiving travel anywhere, really, but more likely in the northern and northeastern major hubs. Last year winter storms impacted several major cities around the country over the Christmas holidays and people were stranded for days while they gradually opened flights.

This is a classic. So sad John Candy has passed. RIP. You know the incident where you get your hands stuck on the seat handles while driving? THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME!!. Well I wasnt driving I was sitting in the seat behind the guy driving. The front seat passanger was sleeping. I start to try and get his jacket off the handles but it wasnt happpening. The front seat passanger woke up and grabs the wheel. We lucky we made it to the side of the road safe. So for this to be in a movie it must have happened to others. Have you seen the movie with Joh n Candy ..Uncle Buck,, perhaps his best comedy. Yeah I have taken my shoes off on plane many times, but Im a Pilot.

Michael McKean is amazing. Part of the Chris Guest-iverse, and one of the best parts. He's SPECTACULAR in Better Call Saul. And the lucky bastard is married to Annette O'Toole, who is a terrific actress in her own right and has always been such a smoke show, to boot.

@@JeffKelly03 TOTALLY agree with you re Annette O Toole. And Christopher Guest is married to Hollywood royalty aka Jamie Lee Curtis. And my best piece of trivia is that Chris Guests brother Nicholas was a cadet on the bridge of the Enterprise in Wrath of Khan. Heck he saved the ship by telling Adm Kirk that “the mains are back line” before Kirk ordered Go sulu! And the ship warped away from the exploding Genesis Device. I just googled Kevin Bacon: The reason Kevin Bacon made this cameo in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is because he had just wrapped up shooting for "She's Having A Baby" and had such a great experience working with John Hughes that he asked to be in his next film, regardless of how small the part would be.

Terrible weather in February meant our flight couldn't land in New York, so the airlines dumped us in New Orleans right in the middle of Mardi Gras . There were no rooms in town so we had to stay at the airport hotel, where waiters in their boxers on roller skates with twinkling battery operated lights were doing all the serving. Everyone got plastered within two hours. Knowing nothing about Mardi Gras we went into the center of town to see the parades, but got trampled. after that, while walking down the street, bras were thrown from second story windows, with one of them landing on my husband's hed. The evening ended with some drunks pushing us into the street with one of them vomiting all over my very expensive shoes. So, yes, flying during the winter, or indeed in hurricane season can be real delight.

@@RamblersInc :). Problem is that it lasts so long you really can't do that. No knowing even the particular week. Plus, you have no idea if a bad one hits whether it will be the Gulf Coast states, Florida, the Carolinas etc. I should mention that we tried to elongate our stay in the Caribbean but couldn't because new people were flying in. Also, I should mention that the staff at the hotel wore tuxes on top paired with the boxer underpants, and the twinkly lights covered their top hats and parts of the jackets. It was like a dystopian world. New Orleans is a "trip" at normal times, but at Mardi Gras it's just "other". Definitely NOT for me. If you ever post a video set in Italy I'll share what happened when my husband put diesel fuel in our rented car. OY VEH! :)

I was an unspottable extra in this movie. The scene I was in was at the bus station where the three girls buy the shower curtain hooks as earrings. I've watched this movie many times and I cannot see any trace of me. I probably just didn't make the big show, and ended up on the cutting room floor. I understand they shot A LOT more footage than they used. RIP John Candy

I needed a little cheering up and knew this would deliver. Thank you. My Mom & I saw this movie on the Thanksgiving Day that it came out in theaters. I didn't realize it was a Thanksgiving movie (about family). I was pleasantly surprised by that. Plus, it was quite funny. I thought of something during your Review segment. That big trunk was introduced as a comedic device -- Steve Martin's character tripping over it. It was the source of comedy several times. Makes one accept it more than question it.

one thing, important to know, is that the Thanksgiving travel weekend is usually the busiest time of the travel year in the US. You have to be crazy. This movie is the same vibe as the movie After Hours, which is another one you have to see. The desk agent droning the announcement at the airport is the teacher from Ferris Bueller

Great movie. They've talked about remaking it over the years, most recently with Will Smith and Kevin Hart (presumably with Will in the Martin role and Hart in the Candy role), but I just can't see how that would work. Obviously, that pairing isn't going to happen now because of Will Smith's... stuff, whatever has been going on with him, starting with the slap. But I don't know if anyone could pull it off. John Candy threaded it perfectly between obnoxious and likable. Hell, there was a relatively similar movie premise a few years ago with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis (I think it was called Due Date? Can't remember but it was about RDJ trying to get to his pregnant wife, with Galifianakis in the Candy-type role) and even that didn't work. John Candy just had "it" when it comes to just being inherently likable and charming in any situation. Gone way, way too soon. By all accounts he was an amazingly kind man, too. Conan O'Brien tells a story about when he got to spend time with him once when Conan was at Harvard and Candy came to do a talk, and Conan ended up driving him around and basically being his chauffeur and tour guide, about what a jovial, lovely man he really was.
@RamblersInc
@RamblersInc 7 ай бұрын
Oh please no no no no. This was too much of a classic for it to be remade (I mean ruined). John Candy seemed like such a bubbly guy. Shame.
@huro1845
@huro1845 7 ай бұрын
Also, what would be the point? Why tell the same story again (and probably not as well) when you can just watch the original? I have never understood Hollywood's obsession with remakes. There might be a few instances where somebody thinks: This is a good story, but the movie has some flaws - I can improve on that. But other than that - why? I hope they leave this movie alone!

This is an R rated holiday movie. Surprised? It's because of the FUCK tirade at the rent a car. While funny as hell and IMO realistic (we've all reached that breaking point) the effusive use of fuck was too much. These days you could get away with one FUCK and still get PG. Peter Quill did it in recent Guardians. But sling a dozen or so like Martin did and you get a mature rating So basically, a FUCK FEST earned an otherwise harmless buddy comedy an R 😆
