I've seen this film dozens of times over the years, + I still get emotional just watching other peoples reaction to the movie, It some how manages to make you feel sorry for the character halfway through the film (With Steve Martin going off on him earlier in the hotel room) before you are even aware you're supposed to feel sorry for him over the fact that he has no one in his life and is a drifter. Its just a great character study in that you can't really know what someone is going through and what their true intentions are for wanting to help you sometimes. How John Candy's character really only wanted his new friend to go and spend time with his family, as that is all he would have wanted for himself if he still had the chance to.

I saw this in the theater with my dad and a friend opening weekend. The laughs shook the theater and were non stop... but when that ending hits, it was just a wave of sniffling... everyone was crying. I don't know who else could have pulled that off but John Candy. I can't see anyone else being that likable and that sympathetic... which is why Hughes wrote this with him in mind.

There was a deleted subplot in which Neal’s wife thought he was having an affair, assuming that “Del” was really a woman he was hooking up with. Knowing that, it makes it so much more meaningful that she finally gets to meet Del and realizes that her husband’s insane misadventures were all real, and not just an excuse to get away from her for a while. I love this movie so much, and honestly, it makes me tear up too now as an adult.
@JayBondReacts2 жыл бұрын
I wish that made it into the final cut. That honestly would just make the ending that much better, though it didn't need it, it would have been a little happy moment of realization that it he wasn't lying.

@@JayBondReacts yeah, there’s a 3 hour cut of this movie. There’s actually more deleted than there is saved. If you notice, the cop who pulls them over at the end is a Wisconsin state trooper, they had actually overshot Chicago by singing in the car, and when Neal found out, he punched Del in the face (if you notice, Del has a black eye for the rest of the movie).

They don't make comedies like this anymore. It's amazing how a film like this can pack such an emotional gutpunch in spite of the preceding comedic mayhem. I always cry for 2 reasons: 1) That shot of them walking up to the house holding the chest with the start of that song is perfection. The music sound of the song starting is like a breakthrough in more than one way 24:20 2) John Hughes (director) has unfortunately passed now, so we will be without more of his special wholesome full emotions in characters and plot (as well as John Candy's!) You can feel these same emotions and connections throughout his (Hughes) movies

May be my all-time favorite movie, not just fav Hughes flick. Recorded on VHS and rewatched at least monthly w/ my roommate throughout college. I routinely quote from it - my kids didn't have any idea wth I was talking about until I had them watch w/ me a few years ago. Now they love it too. And so many cameos in this from actors in other Hughes movies AND, one big one in particular. Fun fact - you may not have recognized a much younger Dylan Baker, who played "Doobie's son" that gave Dell and Neil a ride in the back of his truck. He became a well-known, accomplished character actor and played the serial killer dad in Trick r Treat (among many other amazing roles). Like watching T r T every halloween, I watch TP&A ever holiday season. And, even watching this synopsis w/ you, I cried at the end - I do every time. Love that you now love it too!

"You shared a motel room with a complete stranger? Are you crazy?" "Not yet. But I'm getting there." Fun Fact: After the credits, Neal's boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk. Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA if it weren't for this one scene. New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set.

It's a sleeper of an emotional film. We all tear up when we learn the truth about Del. That was McKean, and he revealed that a significant cut was made from his scene. On top of everything else, they were in the wrong part of the country. They were more lost than they realized. Supposedly earlier cuts of the movie were overly long, and the studio forced a lot of deletions. An important subplot that would have made it even more heart-wrenching at the end is that Neal's wife had decided along the way, from the clues she picked up on, that Neal was having an affair and telling her lies. Neal didn't realize it, but Del's appearance whisked all that away because he was living proof that Neal was telling the truth. Del literally saved his marriage. As I understand it, the cut scenes seem to have been lost forever. Even worse news, the studio is working on a REMAKE, which nobody wants.
@JayBondReacts2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that affair aspect would have made that meeting between them even better. The way they said their names and just looked into one another's eyes. 🥺 Very cool. Thank you! I will likely watch the remake. I don't always like remakes but I do like that it gets people to watch the originals. Being that I watch so much horror, we see remakes all the time in that genre and I tend to like more than I don't.

@@O-T-7-BTS I loved Hill House and Bly Manor! Can't really react to them though cause I watched them already. 😂 I hope they make a 3rd one! 🤞

@@JayBondReacts What?! You haven't seen Midnight Mass? That's the 3rd one and a 4th one called Midnight Club is supposed to come out in October of this year. Now, Midnight Mass is different but I still enjoyed it.

Yes!!! Dude, you should watch The Great Outdoors. You will love it!
@JayBondReacts2 жыл бұрын
So I did see that growing up but forgot everything. I also thought THAT was Uncle Buck lol My buddy was over on Tuesday and I said "the only scene I remember from Uncle Buck is a bat catching scene" and he filled me in that it was The Great Outdoors. 😂
@tempsitch56322 жыл бұрын
Uncle Buck is sirloin steak to the stomped on mcdonalds burger that is Great Outdoors. Great Outdoors is good but for a family audience. Great soundtrack though which I have on vinyl.

Another reactor on KZbin had a theory that Dell had his wife's body in the large trunk he was always carrying around. I never thought of that possibility lol

Well that's certainly a darker spin. 😂

The guy who robbed them was a pizza delivery driver Neil didn't tip in a deleted scene. It shows just how much of a asshole Niel is that he had $700 and didn't tip the guy.

Haha I honestly don't look up the movies before watching so I had no idea it was a holiday movie. 😂 In hindsight, I should have waited had I known.

Great reaction to a classic movie. If you want a rec. for a similarly themed movie ie a duo totally at odds with each other, forced to collaborate to oversome adversity, you might consider Midnight Run where De Niro plays a bounty hunter tasked with bringing a criminal from NY to LA. This is comedy action rather than straight comedy. All the best to you.

That wasn't an extension on the phone dial it was a lock
@JayBondReacts2 жыл бұрын
It's both. There is a lock on it, but there are also extensions w/ information about different numbers. Pulled it up to double check. One says Motel Operator, one says local calls, and the other numbers I can't make out because it's out of focus.
