Hard luck mate! I always find disembarkation from ferries a very slow process, so when you mentioned you had 55 mins I thought 'oh oh'. Although you still made it, I'd have been a lot happier to arrive in time to find the right stop, although that would have screwed up the whole idea of the challenge I guess! So good on you for giving it a go. And hey, you were on the right (left!) side of the plane for the flight back, some fantastic views out your window :) Cheers, these timetable challenges are some of my favourites! EDIT: meant to also say - your ability to go without sleep is seriously impressive.

When you were in Dublin at Custom House Quay, the train station was 2 mins away to get to Belfast, then ferry to Cairnryan.

Arrive Dublin 5:30 Depart Dublin 7:35, arrive Belfast 9:48 Depart Belfast ferry 11:30 (is this realistic?), arrive Cairnryan 13:52 Depart Cairnryan 14:15 (this bus links with the ferry, so should work), arrive Buchanan Bus Station 16:25 Or alternatively get to Europa Bus Station by 10:20 (is this realistic?) and get the Ulsterbus to the ferry terminal that liks with the ferry from there. I guess that's what he was aiming for.
@RetiredCarton4 ай бұрын
@@katrinabryceIn normal times getting into Belfast at 9:48 from Dublin and wanting to be in Europa for 10:20 is absolutely doable - there's very frequent trains linking the two and its about a 10 minute journey. However great victoria street being demolished in favour of Belfast grand central and trains avoiding that area altogether put an end to that, at least until Belfast Grand Central opens
@gs32984 ай бұрын
If arriving in Dublin at 5.30. AirCoach leaving Dublin city centre Gresham Hotel at 6.20 arriving in Belfast Glengal Street (Europa Station) 9.20 or Translink usually linked with Dublin bus leaving Dublin Busáras bus station at 6.45 arriving in Belfast Europa Station at 9.35. There is the Hannon coach service from Belfast I think now from Europa Station at 10.30 direct to Glasgow Buchanan Street arriving at 16.00. The coach drives on to and off the stena ferry so no changing services.

Yes was thinking that. Aiming for that very tight bus connection doesn't make sense, train from Dublin, rail replacement from Newry to Belfast, then 15 minute taxi Lanyon Place to Stena Belfast Port should have worked comfortably.

Another great video Scott, despite not making back as planned to Glasgow. I know it is of little consolation but there might have been a plan B from Dublin AirCoach run a not very well advertised bus from Dublin - Derry via Dublin Airport, Belfast and Belfast International. It's the 705x, there is one that leaves Dublin O'Connell Street at 6:50am and would have got you into Belfast (outside Europa Bus Station) at 9:20am. Assuming then you were getting the 10:30 Hannon Coach service back to Glasgow, this would have got you there on time. This doesn't show up on travel planners from TFI or on Google Maps for some reason but is a useful service and runs express from Dublin Airport to Belfast, when prices are up the wall getting into Dublin I fly into Belfast on the first service of the morning and use a handy timed service into Dublin at 8:20am. It's longer but often cheaper.
@gavincassells75854 ай бұрын
My experience with the Nolan's coach that's sitting outside the Stena terminal is that it goes as soon as everyone is through the terminal doors and it's clear that no one else wants the bus. It's only route is Stena Terminal to Heuston Station and it doesn't seem to follow a strict timetable. I can usually (but not always) make it from a 23:45 dockside arrival to catch a 0:35 Luas from the city centre, so I would have trusted in that to get you to George's Quay (the quay opposite where your Belfast Bus went from). I look forward to the next attempt! :)

Firstly Scott, don’t give up on doing these challenges, they are great fun, even if like this one, it doesn’t go to plan. I would have pre booked a taxi to Dublin and I would have also booked a flight from Dublin to Edinburgh just as precaution if it did fail, you have a cheap flight back home and wouldn’t have lost that much money-if it had gone to plan, but at least you wouldnt have to pay out £££ for a flight home. Best of luck next time

If you are at Dublin airport for a Ryanair flight with time to spare you can go airside and thru security via T2 even though you are departing from T1. You will probably get thru security quicker and T2 shops/food options are better. There is a very nice bar with good food options called The Fallow. The extra walk is only around 5 mins if you go down on the lift towards the 400 gates and then follow the signs to the Ryanair 100 gates. You will pass the T1 security and shops on the way. On Ryanair being bandits it is a known part of their economic model to hike prices on last minute flights as they know people booking at the last minute have less choice. In fairness it probably allows their normal fares to be cheaper. Booking 5/6 weeks in advance is ususally the cheapest or during seat sales.

12:30 in all of my 23 years living in Manchester and coming home to family in Ireland, I very rarely get a cabin for the 3 hours crossing from Holyhead to Dublin - I’m not really a fan of the Stena Adventurer and my favourite ferry is the Irish Ferries Ulysses Cruise Ferry, where I always pay a bit extra for the Club Class Lounge - I’d love to see Irish Ferries operating its ferries from Liverpool (City Centre - old port, not Birkenhead) to Dublin, even the Dublin Swift Fast Ferry, from Liverpool to Dublin, even though the crossing time from Liverpool to Dublin is 8 hours - and yes, getting from Dublin Port into Dublin City Centre can be a real problem, as there is no LUAS Trams or DART trains all the way down to the Irish Ferries and Stena Terminals, even though Dublin Port has been expanded to take cruise ships

There are usually quite a few options to get to Belfast from Dublin - the Dublin Express, Translink X1 and Aircoach. However, finding the correct bus stop is usually a bit of a nightmare - even the public Translink X1 that leaves from Busaras doesn't leave from the actual bus station, but pulls up outside it. Lots of privately run buses go from one of the many stops on Custom House Quay, and it's a nightmare to find the right one! There's also usually the train from Connolly, but these have a rail replacement bus for the summer due to major works at the train station in Belfast. Great video though 🙂

Sadly this is the joys of Ireland and them refusing to have any kind of integrated bus network so 3rd party providers information is just none existent. Only Dublin Bus matters, everyone else can go and stuff themselves. Never understood why the Irish authorities are so against 3rd party bus operators.
