I ❤ Flixbus! I live in Amsterdam and use Fluxbus often for work and family visits to various cities in western Germany, northern France including Lille, and the Belgian cities. Until 3 years ago, I used trains for this travel, but now PREFER to use Flixbus mainly because it's faster than trains to anywhere in Belgium, it'smore frequent & convenient, it's only slightly less comfortable regarding space. And yes, it's MUCH cheaper than any of the trains. I'm an older retiree and always pay the few € extra that it costs to book a forward seat behind the driver - there, i sit comfortably with panoramic view, listen to music via the inboard wifi and a journey of a few hours is over in no time! I actually PREFER IT to economy-class Eurostar (formerly Thalys).

Seen it many times but it still gets me every time, the departures board in Victoria Coach station which says ''departing flights'' in German! Because in German there isn't a single word for departures, there is Abreise for vehicles, Abfahrt for trains, and Abfluege for planes. I guess the person who translated it copied it from an airport departures board.

Great video! Those Flixbus routes are interesting to say the least. Seat 2A is indeed the best in any coach. If you take the train from Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal, it will only be 10 minutes and will cost 2,60 euros. Only if you pay with your bank card or by a pre-bought ov-chipkaart, if you buy a one-way ticket for any train, an additional fixed fee of 1 euro will be added for the paper ticket itself... So, use your regular debit bank card to pay.

The coaches use whichever is convenient or cheapest on the day. There's not a vast difference in timing between the two french ports. Whereas Calais takes less time at sea, and it's less than 30 mins on the autoroute at coach speed to be passing Dunkirk's ferry exit.

Yeah, their are about 20 trains per hour from Sloterdijk to Central Station, costing €2.60, taking 6 minutes. Wouldn't recommend the Metro on that route. You can use you contactless debit/creditcard to open the gates and pay for the ride.
@MrJimheeren Жыл бұрын
It’s almost the furthest you can go on the metro. You have to make the full circle. More then half an hour
@heroicnonsense5 ай бұрын
@@MrJimheeren The original plan was to close the circle, so that you could travel from Sloterdijk to Centraal clockwise in just a few minutes (the metro would run parallel to the tracks that the Eurostar takes to Centraal). But the track never got beyond Isolatorweg station, so there's a gap in the circle. Going counter clockwise, like shown in the video, takes a long time. 17 stops, and some stops are like 200m apart so it really feels like there's not progress at all. Surface trains have been mentioned and are the best choice if you need to go to Centraal from Sloterdijk. They only take about 6 minutes from Sloterdijk to Centraal, but can be rather busy. If, for whatever reason, the surface trains are not an option for you, take bus 22 instead (it takes about 20 minutes - faster than the metro on this route). Sloterdijk is next to Teleport Business District, which makes no sense to have as a terminus for international buses. No person going to the business district will take something like Flixbus, and people who do take Flixbus usually would want to go to the city center. But the bus terminal at Amsterdam Centraal is a bit on the small side. And road traffic into the city center is murder. Hopefully they'll move the international bus station to Amsterdam Zuid station in the future - there's a metro connection from Amsterdam Zuid straight through the city center with stops at all the places you'd want to go as a tourist too (Rokin for the shops and RL district, Europaplein for the RAI Convention Center, Vijzelgracht station is right next to Rijksmuseum etc.) and stops at Centraal (level -2, so one below level below the metro stop shown in this video) too.

Oh lordy, that brings back memories. Way back in the 1970s, after backpacking overland (where possible) from Amsterdam to Melbourne, Australia, I returned to Amsterdam from Victoria coach station in London through a shonky but very cheap travel company. Nothing seemed to go to plan, including spending a night under a table in the bar of an ancient ferry from Dover to Zeebrugge in Belgium - I hasten to add that I was completely sober but the boat was tiny and rustic and under the table was the only place I could find to lay down. Had to keep my face to the side and my mouth closed to avoid being used as an ashtray. I can't remember where we landed, but it certainly wasn't Zeebrugge. The coach from wherever it was in Belgium to Amsterdam was comfortable enough (hallelujah!) and I managed to get a couple of hours of much needed sleep. Then I was dumped not at Amsterdam central station as scheduled but about 2 kms east along the Amstel river. Not a taxi to be seen so ended up walking to the station and then took a taxi to the home of a fellow expat resident. Great to see him and assorted droppers-in after so long away, but I was expected to sparkle and I was all sparkled out.

Mainly because they also offer direct busses form Lisbon, Albufeira and other places on the iberic peninsula to Sofia, Bulgaria. These are as far as I can discover Europe's longest long distance coach routes. However they also have a London-Sofia route taking about 48hrs which also sells tickets to the intermediate halts, in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. A channel crossing by boat to Belgium or Lille for some TGV action maybe worth a try on the Bulgarian busses of union-ivkoni.
