We travelled on The Ghan a few years ago, Alice to Adelaide Gold Class, and it was wonderful! There were some folk climbing on Uluru then (2017?) but it was frowned on. We got up at 4am to see sunrise on Uluru - it was magical! We also had an outdoor evening meal in the bush near Uluru with an astronomer pointing out the wonders of the heavens under beautifully clear night skies. The old Telegraph Station in Alice is worth a visit, too.

Always go out with a hat and preferably Polarised sunglasses. When I told my optician I was going to Australia this year he wagged his finger at me and said get the best sunglasses you can afford preferably polarised as the sun is very damaging to your eyes there because of high UV. So I did! Loving these videos by the way!

I've been lucky to travel all over Australia and the one area I wouldn't recommend is Alice/Uluru. A long, long way for not very much. I principally remember three things about the trip: a visit to the Flying Doctors Clinic in Alice due to an aggressive (suspected spider) bite; poor, drunk Aborigines clustered on the Todd riverbed and the folly of watching people climb Uluru despite the fact that it's a sacred site and doing so was incredibly disrespectful. Looking at the volume of buses now, tourism has exploded rendering the whole experience even more unpleasant.
@heatherhoward2513Ай бұрын
Of course it's a long way, it's a big country. Uluru should be visited with lots of time to spare, an open mind, and your own transport. You people who go around with your eyes and eyes closed to your surroundings really annoy me.
@amandafraser2512Ай бұрын
@@heatherhoward2513 Perhaps "you people" don't have sufficient funds to drive hire cars almost a thousand kilometers to then spend an indeterminate length of time hanging around in order to get the best out of the experience.

As you’d have figured out (incl from the prices), these days the Ghan (north / south…Darwin / Adelaide ) and Indian Pacific (east/ west….Sydney / Perth) are pitched at high end (and, often, older Gen) tourists - similar to the Rocky Mountaineer etc in Canada - with side tours, top drawer meals, fancy wines etc all included Locals don’t use them…much cheaper and quicker to fly. Fares are now as mad as you say… though can get about 50% less $ for a lower grade cabin booked way in advance ? Enjoy the trip…it’s a part of australia a LOT of Australians haven’t visited (until get to Grey Nomad stage of life, when the desire to tow a caravan burns strong) - it’s a long way from the southern cities where most of us live, the drive to get there through “empty” wears thin, and can easily “go somewhere good” (Bali, Thailand, Fiji…the usual Aussies hangouts) for a holiday for a lot less $

Did the tour back in 2019 just before they closed off the rock for climbing and has a night under the stars which was great as it was a lovely clear crystal night and we could see everything also got some aboriginal art work at the centre. But the 4 hour coach ride to Alice Springs was a long journey.

Our family with another family drove from Peth to Adelaide in the late 60s / early 70s and then onto Melbourne. Our family of five had a For Cortina 440 and the other family (also five) had a VW Combi. At least we could move around a bit in the VW. I took a coach trip from Perth to the Australian F1 race in Adelaide in 1986. It was 36 hours to the Barossa Valley. We stopped for food stops and maybe a comfort break or two. The next year I caught the coach again but flew back.
