#cars #supercars #1970s
The 1970ʼs were a classic era in sports car racing. Porsche and Renault were just two of the famous names that competed for glory during this time.
The Porsche short-tail 917 was one of the newer lightweight vehicles introduced during the early 70ʼs. The main opposition to the Gulf-Porsche team was Ferrari with their 512
model. Pedro Rodriguez set a new lap record of 3mins, 16.5 seconds, which was nine seconds faster than the current F1 lap record. With an astonishing speed of 257 kms an hour, these were the worldʼs fastest racing cars.

What a beautiful era for auto racing... Of course, filled with many a tragedy. None the less... Such astounding machines, and strong wills of daring drivers. The cars, the men that stood dominate. A beautiful era for motorsport.

I hear ya, but IMSA today is super competitive, great racing, some of these same tracks....no fire-breathing Lola's or crazy Chaparrals , I get it, but in those days it wasn't uncommon for several laps separating 1st and 2nd, or even HOURS at the big ones.

John Wyer was a brilliant operator. Many years ago, I obtained and still have a copy of his book, Motor Racing Management originally published in 1956.. Not just a behind the scenes view at Aston Martin, .but a complete description of how to run a successful Motor Racing team. From the justification for taking part, aims and ambitions and achieving the result. All aspects of running a successful operation. Of all management text books I have read in my business career, this is the the least complex and the most informative.

They not just loooked fast, but they were really very, very fast, in other side, they killed many glorious drivers, but as we, petrol heads, know very well, racing, were and still are a dangerous sport, and in those days the safety of these amasing racing cars, doesn´t were the same as the today´s endurance sportcars.

The late 60s and 70s race cars are the most wicked looking cars of all eras, regardless of racing type. The drag racing cars had the just produced 426 Hemi or Boss 429. The Stock Cars were amazing looking. The Hemi and Boss were originally designed for NASCAR. Indy cars and the LeMans cars were the sexiest ever. The GT40 and Porsche 917 have never been surpassed aesthetically.

Overall quite enjoyable--especially the Targa footage. Erratic re specs and racing chronology. And, IMO, unforgivable that Rodriquez and Siffert simply vanish from the commentary. Aside from McLaren's accident, no fatalities mentioned. (Siffert killed in F1, but Rodriquez died in a sports car race. I'm principally an F1 fan, but I imagine the 70s were similarly lethal for sports car drivers.)

sidx45 Late 60s also lethal... Ken Miles died in GT40 testing.. just testing! Crushing disintegration and fire were big problems resulting from pursuit of lightness. David Piper lost a leg doing stunt crashes for Steve’s movie. Jim Clark died in an F2 car, minor off course excursion into small trees obliterated the car. In the usa, Donny Scogmo was killed cutting a T-70 in half at the pit wall end at Road America in Wisconsin. I love the looks and sounds of the formula and sports cars of this era... fantastic... but not good for survivability like todays composites tubs...

ZebsFrend considering that I spent 8 years doing suspension and chassis engineering on race cars in the 70s before moving on to more fruitful engineering endeavors, I say you assessment of my comment is pure shit. Testing is essential, you have no friggen idea how many hours I spent at skid pads, taking high speed film of suspension in and out of corners.. Non of the teams I worked on killed anyone, or maimed them. If death is your marker of successful limit finding, you sir are absolutely freaking sick.
