Planet Coaster College - El Loco Coaster Tutorial

The El Loco coasters by S&S (known ingame as the Loony Turns Crazy One) are some of the most compact coasters in the world - yet they also feature some of the steepest drops, crazy curves, and unique inversions. In this video I'll show you how to build one of these - albeit it slightly derailed from the standard off-the-shelf model that many of them in real life follow.
As a note in hindsight, the POV definitely shows that this coaster is way too slow. All I can say is that the trims should've been quite a bit slower, and the block brakes shouldn't have removed the cars at all - it shouldn't be an issue to let these coasters run through their track at a pretty high speed.

Pretty accurate; the first ever El Loco was built at my local park (Mumbo Jumbo at Flamingo Land - world's steepest rollercoaster in 2009 until Japan broke the record.), and I've rode it multiple times - this was pretty similar to it

Thanks for the video, super informative! I see these most often at carnivals -- built into maybe a 10m x10m space (like 30ft by 30ft maybe?). So, a very small area, but it's all track. They like to make these for kids, usually themed with mice carts or something. And yes, they get so crazy with their constant turns and ups and downs in such a small space. Heck, you could practically reach and touch another car or the track, though I don't recommend it :) They are definitely fun.

Where I am, down in Australia, doesn't really do great with coasters, but we do have one of these funnily enough, and they're honestly just a big boy's wild mouse. The beyond vertical drop is really the best part of the ride, since it pretty much throws you out of your seat when you go over and you really get a cool conflict of forces, but a lot of the other elements *sound* cool in theory, but really are just gimmicks. That roll into the loop honestly just hurts because of the hang time, the outward turn is really only good if you're sitting on the outside seat that's banking down, and the rest of the ride is pretty standard. Don't get me wrong, fun rides, and they're a nice middle ground between say, a eurofighter and a wild mouse, and they're pretty unique in that, but unless you're in a smaller park with an absence of many larger rides, you can kind of gloss over one without too much regret. Certainly one to get on if you're a coaster enthusiast, purely for how weird they are, but that's pretty much it.

Yeah I feel that man. I'm a student too and the only decent parks in aus are up on the gold coast which is out of state for me, so I've only been up on family holidays in the past. Maybe a theme park trip is on the bucket list one day though eh? hit as many of the big parks in the world as you can. Definitely something I'm saving up to do one day.

That sucks man. I do have some good parks around. Phantasialand for example is like a little over an hour away. And Efteling like 1.5 hour. Maybe you know them. And yeah I'm definitely planning to do several coaster trips once my financial situation allows it. Biggest one being the US as they have some insane coasters over there.

I think Arrow nowadays is carried out by both Vekoma and S&S, with Vekoma doing their traditional looping and family coasters whilst S&S focus on their more weird coaster types like the 4D coaster

theres one almost exactly like this near to where i live called mumbo jumbo, theyre really fun if you get the chance to go on one. held the world record for steepest coaster for a fair few years, a coaster in japan took the crown recently if im not mistaken

Great video! (for once, duh). But since it's college, here is some more trivia: - The outward banked turn figure was designed by Alan Schilke (wasn't all the ride designed by him then? I don't know), the man who invented the 4thD coaster for Arrow. - The strength of the original design is that, minus some lower parts, all the ride is supported by 4 columns, each composed of 4 vertical supports. So the number of foundations is actually quite low. - You'd need your block brakes to be slanted as well, following a neutral slope (that's how we call a slope where the car rolls but don't gain speed). It could be handy in case of a power failure. Also, catwalks! ^^

Silv! If you want to go on one not that far from where you live I whould recomend Flamingo Land in Yorkshire or Fraispertuis City in France. From the centre of Brussels it's only a 4-5 hour drive.

I am currently thinking about what I should get, NoLimits 2 or Planet Coaster. Each side of the argument seems very nice. With NoLimits, I have a massive range of coasters to pick from, and can build any sort of element possible. The primary backside being performance requirements, for I have a dinky laptop, and on how NoLimits is very hard to use. With Planet Coaster, it is very simple to use, and has a nice sized selection of roller coasters. The backside I am aware of Planet Coaster is that you can't make you own elements (at least that is what I think). So, what do you reckon?

It honestly depends (I have both :P). If you're into realism and are willing to spend a lot of time (unless you're well experienced) into every aspect of a coaster then NL2 is your best bet. If you're interested in more aspects such as money, flatrides, parks, etc. then Planet Coaster. I do agree it's a tough decision but I've found myself playing more Planet Coaster lately :P So there you go.

Usually there's only one outward bank on El Locos. It's on the curve after the first block brake when it does basically an oval into the dive loop.

I don't know what type of coaster this is, but look up Crazy Loop Roller Coaster in Brean, U.K. I went on it and it would have been smooth if it were not so old, and it is fairly compact as are all the coasters in that park. Have a look at them and see what you think. I just thought that it was quite interesting that they were quite similar to the El Locos, but I think portable is the best description of the coasters, but they are fixed to the concrete.

Isn't the Lost Gravity in Walibi Holland a bit el loco-like? It's kind of the same concept: it's very smooth, seems like it has the same coaster car and it has steep drops too.

Not that many similarities I'm afraid - the El Loco cars in Planet Coaster are actually not the standard ones - the standard El Locos have much more in the way of wild mouses in terms of size and seating. Lost Gravity feels like a mini wing coaster/meets Infinity Coaster to me.

Funny that these rides aren't that common, we have one down in Australia and we really don't do great for coasters (we have one intamin and that's sort of it, and it's universally accepted as the best ride in the country by a mile). Strange that we can't get a hyper on the continent but we have an el loco.

I don’t put trim brakes on the first drop of that el loco. I usually use angle snap, so I keep it at 112 degrees.

You didn't test with multiple trains to get the timings of your block sections worked out. Maybe that's a subject worthy of its own video (if you haven't already made one on the subject). I suppose it doesn't matter as much with this type of coaster, but I *hate* it when a block brake actually has to stop a train unless the ride has broken down.

I have rode the el loco roller coaster in circus circus Las Vegas hotel and the outwards banked turns produce a lot of g forces. It's like normal air time but sideways.
