Planet Coaster College - How To Make Smooth Coasters

This is a tutorial on how to make smooth coasters in Planet Coaster with a realistic heartline and continuous roll, as well as satisfying control over your trackshaping at last - unfortunately it's not a very fun technique. I've had to timelapse a Planet Coaster College video, and that's saying a lot (note to self: these videos should really be a lot smaller). The technique is strange: build your entire coaster out of 4m long sections with a medium banking offset, then smooth it out by selecting 4 pieces of track, smoothing, moving up 1 piece, smoothing, doing that for the length of the track back and forth, and repeat the whole process 4 times. It's tedious, time-consuming and definitely not what Frontier wants you to do; but it results in super satisfying shaping so here it is for the needy enthusiasts anyway.
This is the Grapefruit technique, albeit it thankfully not the one you're thinking of.
I've linked this before and it will never seem less random - both Dustin being a NoLimits person and randomly doing this great Planet Coaster thing and the fact that I'm linking to it for a lot of people who know me but don't have a clue where this Dustin is coming from - but here you go, watch his video because it spawned everything:
• Heartlined Planet Coas...

P.S. I have confession to make - this method is most time consuming for me because it causes me to spend more time just looking at the smooth results than I spend on achieving the results in the first place.

I guess the developers figure that the average game player won't care about heartlining, but I think there's enough of a demand within the coaster community that they should add it!

You can grab de middle part of the selection, the one with the < > symbol and it will "drag" the selection to either side of the track btw, no need to add and substract every time, saves you half the clicking lol

I think part of the issue too is the POV cameras need tweaked to maybe "rattle" a little more for realism - No limits 2 does this PERFECTLY to when the train makes turns and whatnot, the camera movement isn't choppy.

That is some damn sexy RMC track shaping right there... ;) BTW, I really hope someone from Frontier sees this video. A 'continuous roll button' is something we really need in the game.
@j-coasters
@j-coasters 7 жыл бұрын
Lots of people say that, but they don't add it because of the people who fanboy over planet Coaster and get triggered by people who say anything other than the game is perfect. They only hear from the fanboys. Though it has been discussed a lot on their forums.
@adrikerkhofs8892
@adrikerkhofs8892 7 жыл бұрын
Jayke Menges To some extent I do agree with you. Frontier only 'really' listens when there's a thread with 100+ responses with featured creators. However I can see that some people think the game is 'perfect' in their eyes. The game then probably has all the features they wanted.
@j-coasters
@j-coasters 7 жыл бұрын
Adri Kerkhofs yeah that's kinda what I'm getting it. It's just if anyone says anything negative, even if it's true, they get shut down by fanboys denying the issues even exist.

I hope that someday the coaster builder from Planet Coaster will get close to the coaster builder of NoLimits2. I don't think it will ever get that good, cause' NoLimits2 is made for reallife coaster layouts (it is used by big companies actually) but it could go to that point. Even if they bring in a "normal build mode", the one they got right now and for the other hand a "pro build mode" like the one in NoLimits2.

There is a thread about the continuous roll problem in the official forum. It's actually more than 10 pages and no one of the devs answer to it ... Makes me a little bit sad. They have TO DO something about the smoothness problem. Otherwise the game will die for me in the next few months. Makes fun to build cool looking scenery and stuff, but if you can only build oldschool style unsmooth woodies with the actual coaster builder its completely useless. And about the negative things. If you say something negative in the Twitch streams you will be muted :/ @Roman S: Would be cool to have a pro build mode with 4 different views if you want to. Element shaping will be a lot easier :)
@ambydupuis

It would not take that much time for the developers to include this into an automatic macro, they could just add a 'magic smooth' button on the UI, that would perform 1 back-and-forth pass over a selected part of the track, the player would be free to use this as many time as he wishes and on the part of the coaster he'd consider interesting. Plus it would remove a tedious time-consuming process, that could definitely be automated... I think, Sivarret, you could talk them into that ;-)

I'm sure they already know the issue. There's been continuous discussion on it on the forums for months, and they must've tested it themselves and seen the problem. No idea why they choose to ignore it.
@6105boe
@6105boe 7 жыл бұрын
I don´t think they are neccessarily ignoring the problem if you want to use that word. I think it is a combination of a) not having a specifically defined goal for such a system besides 'make it smooth pls' which doesn't describe at all the current functions and algorhythms they use and especially not the desired end goal, and b) that this might be a lower priority item on their list but of course that is speculation at best unless anyone knows if they've made any statements or announcements about this. For the record though, I'd love them to a) change the current system to allow for smoother tracks or b) add more adjustable track items like barrel rolls and aileron rolls if you'll excuse the use of aviation terms.
@Aphid4
@Aphid4 6 жыл бұрын
Might be a case of some simple things. Even some subsets of these would eliminate your problems: 1: Allow changing the reference point of rolls from 'on the track' to '2m above the track' (for inverted coasters, 1m below the track) for the smooth tool as well as the build tool (currently the smooth tool is fixed to 0m, while the bank point can be changed for the build tools). Now smooth preserves heartlines. 2: Allow the player to not only fix the location (X,Y,Z, track angle) at each point of the coaster spline, but also the first derivative of each of these four values thru the coaster builder. Currently when building pieces you can't directly set these easily. 3: Allow the player to 'lock in place' a section of their coaster while building/smoothing. 4: Add a single button that smoothes the coaster in ~2-4m sections backwards and forwards with a single press.
@6105boe
@6105boe 6 жыл бұрын
Aphid4 we haven't seen the code obviously but at first glance that looks like it would solve the problem. I fear however that this is a case of do we a) go back and thoroughly fix something we already made, estimated revenue = 0 or b) develop some new feature or dlc, estimated revenue > 0 Ofcourse I would prefer the fix, but... :)

I actually used a modified version of this method, when I was recently building a hybrid coaster. Honestly your videos have helped me a lot, when I make coasters on Planet Coaster. Sidenote: For the blueprint of my hybrid coaster, I used the track layout of a wooden coaster that I made on the original RCT. It’s for a small project I’m doing for my own amusement right now. It’s envisioning a park from the late 1980s/early 1990s to a flash forward to the late 2010s. I’m just really excited.

i think, during alpha, when the smoothy smooth was revealed, during that video they did the technique briefly at some point. I've done it this way ever since. 4m sections and sliding the smooth. in my Woodland Road Fun Fair series, you can see the entire track is 4m pieces, but of course I cut out most of the smoothy smooth. yeah, it takes hours.

If you want, you can use autocomplete on some of the sections that aren’t as smooth to make it even better. If you don’t use it on sections that are too large, you can keep your heart line. But it still takes away a lot of it, so only use it when the normal four meter method isn’t cutting it for a certain section.

This definitley works. The only problem is that there're still some very small shakes in the sharper turns. For example, if you make a corkscrew, it can easily end up making some small shakes, but it's still NOTHING compared to building it the basic way. In that case if you want it to be completely smooth, it probably takes a lot more skills and mathmatic improvements. It works fine. Remember to save your coaster along the editing. A good idea could also be to mark the piece you are currently at so that you know where you stopped last time you played.

Credits to Irelia - he did the 4m technique, but since it has some jagged movements, you can fix it with the autocomplete technique, which is explained in his video. With the 4m technique, going around the track 4 times will make it best, but if you combine the autocomplete it will achieve complete smooth after going round the track 2 times or on some cases 1 time. It reduces the time SO much, and I would recommend you try it out as it works out for all the cams too!

when you guys start sealing off the park, you could use mountains, and out things on them like maybe another coaster kinda like garuda but more tropical and maybe a hang gliding sation or parachuting. You could also put like a mountain side hotel or like a hiking trail or something like that. Also mini golf should have 18 holes but you could just cut down on them to conserve time. You could also do a zip line, it might be hard to do though. Also imagine how cool it would be if you had like a helicopter tour, it would be extrememly hard but eould be sooooo cool to see a helicopter in the sky! You could do so many things with a simple tropical mountain range! Btw this stuff is awsome!!! I want to do exactly what you guys do I just don't have the stuff to do with thanks for your time! instead of pushing the two arrows on the 4part track selection, you can also use the center ball to push it to the next part of the track, or is that not easy to select. because i think you only need to push is forward press smooth all and go a little bit further again. also i think hartline is something that you need to use almost always

I am wondering if you could use the 4m track elements in specific areas with barrel rolls, twists and over banked curves and then use larger sized pieces in areas where it may not be necessary to smooth the track as extensively (hills or standardized helixes for example). I think you could still come up with amazingly smooth coasters and also save a ton of time by using this technique selectively where it is needed.

I love how they made the U-Beam in the right way to make them load bearing. But that makes it even more annoying how they put a bolt in the middle with not strengthening

It'd be nice if there was a function built into the game to do this automatically. It'd be cool if some prominent community members tried to push for this too :P

Does this method of basically running over your entire roller coaster with a whetstone 16 times result in better ride stats or is it mostly cosmetic/for realistic experience?

despite breaking the game, the fact that it is such a formulaic process means that it should be absolutely simple to mod, or for frontier to include as an advanced option. No reason they couldn't include it in the engine (perhaps with a condition or disclaimer requiring the 4m segments)

you can grab a selection of 4 pieces with the blue tile in the middle of your selection (< >) and move it, so you dont have to move first forward and pull the selection back to the 4 selected pieces ( i hope you know what i mean)

The way I see it, if you wanted to make a realistic coaster with continuous banking and/or with a consistent heartline, you might as well use no limits 2 instead of planet coaster. Planet coaster is a game made for making parks with coasters and scenery with guests. The coaster creator isn’t really the center aspect of the game. The creativity and scenery aspect is. With no limits 2, you can add lots of scenery too, but the coaster builder is the center of the entire program. If you would spend all that time in planet coaster to build a smooth coaster, you might as well just use no limits instead. I’m not saying that the smoothing method you have shown is bad, or that planet coaster is bad, because I love planet coaster and I have used this method multiple times, but it is because of this method that I decided to give no limits 2 a try. Just a thought.

Sil, when using this technique do you notice a difference in fear levels? i have a problem when making coasters in the curves, hills, turns, etc. by way of high fear levels :/ thanks :)

lmao after playing NoLimits2 for a year now, this coaster is still quite rough and I cant believe the things you have to do to achieve this. I just wish that NL2 was more user friendly.

Usually I like using longer track pieces and it's still smooth. Not ultra smooth but alteast very smooth. The issue I have with this method is that it takes forever and can still have shaky parts.

BTW: You can literally use heartling without the 4 meter method. So this is a little useless

Humm a representative definable process, seems very much like something a computer would be good at doing for us. Would be nice if there were say a button that did this process automatically.

I wonder if you could make a new smoothing algorythm based on this technique? To use whatever method they are now as a baseline but then separating selected selections up into smaller pieces and smoothing each piece one by one. It'd probably be more time-consuming but at least we'd get smoother coasters with less effort. Frontier, get on this!

You don't have to move each grip on either side of the selection. You can grab the midpoint grip and move the entire selection.
