This two-part short series was supposed to come out a while ago, but it took me much longer than planned and I had to split it up into two parts. It's all about a new wooden coaster in the beautiful Uzuri Gardens by Geekism and maskedbandit (with some extra help); they've given me a plot and some restrictions to work with to make a fitting addition to the zoo. In this video, I'm making the first half of the wooden coaster layout and adding custom supports. I'm trying to make this GCI coaster as realistic as possible; but that's easier said than done, evidently.

maskedbandit you guys should make a backstory where the zoo started out as a zoo but then boils a roller coaster for the employees and other people and then they found out they could make money off of them and started a theme park, kinda like hershy park. Stated making candy but made an amusement park.

Holy crabsticks. This is exactly the sort of thing "you didn't know you needed it until you had it" sorta thing. Those support make a world of difference in the aesthetic of the coaster, and it's all for the better. 10/10

Wooden coaster custom supports are still too intimidating for me, right now I still have panic attacks at the prospect of rebuilding 1 steel coaster support that was removed by a path, major kudos with this! And also obligatory yay more PlanCo videos!

I work in the industry. The extra planks in between the tracks are to allow for easier access to the mechanics on the trains in case of a valley or stall.

I rode Troy at Toverland again this month for the first time since 2008 or so and I was afraid that it wouldn't have aged well but oh man was I wrong... it's still as incredible as back then. GCI really knows how to keep the whole layout exciting. From the moment you crest the lifthill until the brake run, you just don't get any rest.
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that Toverland maintains Troy really well, with regular retracks. Not every GCI retains its smoothness as well as Troy does.

My favorite is mystic Timbers even though it’s more of an out an back than a twister. It’s just so cool riding a heartlined woodie, compared to the traditional banking of most old wooden coasters
@TOG2018

Is mystic timbers a GCI, or is it RMC? I thought it was RMC, but I may be wrong
@samcmusic3031

James Michael it’s 100% wood gci. Are you confusing it with twisted timbers?
@samcmusic3031
@samcmusic3031 5 жыл бұрын
The planks in the middle of the track from what I understand is so the maintainence workers can have something to step on when they walk from one side of the track to the other. On old woodies you didn’t need that because the banking is gentler and can walk on one catwalk all the way around the ride, but on a coaster with steep banking you have to cross back and forth to be able to walk along the whole ride
@B4T4LI4
@B4T4LI4 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Arrow used to do that with their coasters as well (even in inversions)

Jeffrey - yeah I rode vortex yesterday actually and if you really wanted you could make it from the lift hill and basically all the way through the loops and come off at the break run just by walking on little catwalks between the rails

I’ve only been on a few gci’s but my favorite is lightning racer at Hershey Park. It’s definitely one of the best GCI’s built.
@ilikerollercoasters4757
@ilikerollercoasters4757 5 жыл бұрын
The two planks down the middle of the track on a newer GCI is for walking along during the daily morning inspections. If you look at some of the older GCIs like Thunderhead or Lightning Racer, you will see that there are wooden planks filling in the middle of the track every time it turns and changes directions. These track planks help the ride inspectors get safely to the other side of the track where the walkway will not be blocked off by the track covering it. These are basically just safety features for the people who walk the track every morning.

Looks incredible! Makes me think back to my Wicker Man days. I though the planks in the middle of the track was that the maintenance/construction workers can't fall in the holes in the middle of the track. Not 100% sure though.
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 5 жыл бұрын
Read from many comments here that it's partly that, and perhaps also to strengthen the track a bit more. I do wonder how useful they'd be as catwalks - all GCI's already have double catwalks alongside almost their entire layout, and extra planks between all the curves.
@Operateur
@Operateur 5 жыл бұрын
Oh right, as always I forgot to check the other comments before posting mine :D But about the planks, I don't think they are meant for a catwalk, but more as an extra safetly if workers cross the rails.

Damn, crazy man you are! There is one thing you didn't mention, but NEEDS to be incorporated in some sort in the support structure! GCI (usually) puts some planks in a decorative way on one specific place on the coaster, and I think it would be nice if you did that as well (maybe you already did that, but we'll see than!) www.thecoasterkings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/DSCN1541-768x576.jpg This is also featured on El Toro in Plohn and some other coaster over in the USA!

A GCI wooden coaster with *steel* supports???! Even if it allows a "steeper lifthill..." why?! When I go on a wooden rollercoaster, I go on it partially because I like being thrashed around, but mainly for the different style. The wood beams everywhere making you feel like your hands are going to be chopped off, the diving between the support structures. I don't want to go on a wooden coaster that has been invaded by steel, that completely removes the point of a wooden coaster for me and totally ruins the vibe... Maybe I'll just have to ride the first one when it's built in 5-10 years and that will change my mind, but in the meantime, it's a hell no from me.
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 5 жыл бұрын
Most of the supports are still wooden, though - as is the entire track, and the track being made of wood is what characterizes a wooden coaster experience the most. I think it has potential, tbh.
@kyleflounder9783
@kyleflounder9783 5 жыл бұрын
@@Silvarret Ah true. For me it's moreso just the psychology of seeing all the wood I guess that I am concerned about. Seeing the steel may give me too much of a sense of safety (I'm batshit crazy ok, I like the most dangerous looking wooden coasters lol), if that makes sense. It's not likely a wooden track supported by 18-inch thick steel rods is gonna collapse, while "theoretically" an all-wood track looks like it could snap any moment haha
