Tim Burton, gifted as he is, accidentally helped shape the last decade of major studio films when you think about it: superhero movies with Batman ‘89, and live-action Disney remakes with Alice in Wonderland. And I suppose this too was a major step forward for remakes and reboots. Which is a shame for someone whose best work is so uniquely his own.

It's interesting how many celebrities were apes in this movie. Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Giamatti, Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, Charlton Heston. There was a de-emphasis of this for the newer movies, and if they already had a profile, it was much lower. The celebrity appearances were mostly human roles, which in a series that focuses more on the apes, I'm glad they didn't try to over stuff it with celebrities to sell it. Less distracting.

The film's greatest mistake was how generic it was. Tim Burton is a great director when he works on his own original material. It's when he tries to do big budget franchise films that things fall apart for him. It's just not for him unless you give him free reign. This is why I will always say Batman Returns is better than the 1989 Batman. At least Batman Returns feels unique. It's incredibly gothic in all the right ways. The OG with Jack felt GENERIC.

Honestly, you wouldn’t know it was her unless you saw the original, and knew exactly how the actress looked after 30+ years at the time this premiered.

Even if "Planet of the Apes" had lost that award to "Lord of the Rings", it should have at least been nominated over "A Beautiful Mind".

The question has always been: WTH was that ending supposed to mean? Astronaut way out in space jumps through an anomoly, int o the future of the alien world below them. Passing the chimp who went first by days and the command ship preceeded the astronaut by thousands of years. Right? Then the astronaut leaves the planet, jumps not only through time but space to arrive presumably on our modern Earth that has also been overrun by Thade in the past? That space anomoly is a "whatever the hell I need in the script" device.

I loved this movie from the first time I saw it on VHS. The way I understood the twist ended is basically Mark Wahlberg's character ended up crashlanding on an alternate universe earth in which human history was overwritten by apes. My theory is that in this universe humans never existed, or they did not evolve to be the superior species. Apes became president and built monuments. This would explain the Abe Lincoln ape statute. History played out similarly but with apes as the dominant species on earth. Another theory I have is the chimp that got lost at the beginning of the film is responsible for creating the alternate ape dominant universe. When Mark Wahlberg's character went after him, he crashes in the past of the ape universe. The technology he brought with him and left behind allowed the apes to progress from the dark ages to the industrial revolution.

To settle this whole "is this remake set on Earth" thing like the original, no it's not. It's on another planet all together. The writers envisioned this whole mythology and background and even the name: ASHLAR. All cut out in either editing or the script was put into a shredder machine and then you get this fucking mess. The ends is just a set up for something to do down the road or as Burton said "let them figure it out". He wanted out so i think Thade found a way back to operate the machinery in the pod but i dont buy that as he's not smart enough and he went through the same wormhole Marky Mark did and it's Ape-Washington DC in the past of......the same planet he never visited.....wait is that implying he went to Earth in the past or just another planet? This was one of the last movies I saw with my mom at the movies before she died and she really enjoyed it so I have a soft spot for the movie. Even if it’s not that great. The makeup is amazing! And the sets. It is nice to watch movies with practical effects

Ok now we need a The Happening roast 😂

To circle back to the Power Ranger movie roasts. The main villain from In Space was in this as an extra. Yeah I can see why she retired three years later. 😮

I would have gone with “Beneath the planet of the apes” for a roast imo. Given that Taylor was hardly in it. And the ending is a complete downer.

Beneath was still better than this lowkey

Escape is my favorite sequel but it lends to some good comedy.

I agree Beneath, along with Battle, is probably the worst movie of the original series as the first-half, especially, feels like a second-rate retread of the first (as does Brent with all due respect to the actor). However, to me, that ending was one of the bright spots of the movie. Sure, it's definitely bleak/dark, so I get if it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but personally, I loved that ending as a kid as I found it it even more disturbing/shocking than the original with that ending narration living rent-free in my head.

Yup. Escape obviously has a wacky premise, but once the story gets cooking I think it's very enjoyable as an inverse/flip of the original premise, and by the end, I think it's the best of the original sequels along with Conquest.

You missed the 20th anniversary 3 years ago To quote Dan O’ Shea’s review “this movie has no point. Give credit where credit is due; the makeup effects are amazing. They actually look and move like real apes even if it does look ridiculous. But the rest of the movie is lazy; the plot is non existent, the characters are one dimensional, and the message is lost entirely.” The ending didn’t make sense either as the whole movie didn’t take place on earth at all Nostalgia Critic even says the movie is awkward with the actors acting too weird to be invested, characters are sticks in the mud, there’s faulty sci fi and forced commentary @17:25 😂😂😂 @35:55

FWIW, I've been a PotA fan since I was a kid, and let me be clear: this movie is not good. Among other flaws, I think the pacing was uneven, the ending tries too hard to remake the first, and I think Wallberg was miscast as the lead (and I say that liking some of his other roles). That being noted, I think this movie is over-hated to a degree. Roth was great as the villain, and the practical ape make-up was an impressive evolution from the OG series. Also, for all of its flaws, it feels like this movie was a workshop/prototypes for some ideas they would later re-use to better effect in the Caesar reboot trilogy like having the apes move/run more like traditional apes rather than the more humanoid apes from the original series.

Say what you want but Tim Roth absolutely killed it in this movie. I remember not liking the movie but being thoroughly impressed & even legitimately bothered by his performance. He reminded me of Ralph fiennes in Schindler’s list with the absolute disdain he had for the lessers.
