Why not create a discord for non members to maybe contribute/assist. You could try methods like this to open source some creative or innovative solutions to some of the issues from some really passionate environmentalists, and maybe provide a bonus to your members using the discord as well. Just feels like you could drive alot more support by engaging the community in this manner and providing them additional agency.

You portray Maasai-Lion 'coexistence' in a FALSE light. Why? The reality is that Maasai people are encroaching on lion territories and still actively killing lions. If they were losing a few cows to lions every week, they would be left with no cows after a year or two. The Maasai population has grown exponentially over the past 100 years, with around 10 times more people and maybe 20 times as many cows. This population explosion is similar for other tribes. Sadly, the future of lions and other wild animals in Africa looks bleak."

Using lights to scare away lions reminds me of a man my grandfather knew in the 60s. He often had to travel through the Serengeti by foot. To stop lions from attacking him, he would play his violin. It scared the lions and terrified my grandpa once when the sound of Bach on violin came from the dark wilderness one night, only for that man to appear. It's wonderful to hear how we keep finding more and more ways to peacefully coexist with wild animals.

Such a marvelous story. My dad, an electrical engineer, worked on 2 hydro projects in Tanzania. First in the 70s, then about a decade later. When doing fly-over surveys of project areas during his 2nd stint, he noticed a shocking decline in elephant populations. So, he got a few people together & founded a charitable wildlife organization that mainly focused on elephants. East Africa became so dear to his heart, after retirement, he returned as consultant on 2 projects in Malawi. He would have loved hearing about this incredible young man & seeing the impact of his invention.

I was really, really looking forward to this mission. This one made me cry. Once we were spectators of a young lioness hunting, while the rest of the tribe was watching her (the park sentries - Kruger National Park - later told us, that the lioness was "trying out" for the real hunting. They had to go out searching for the Zebra, she hurt but wasn't able to kill). It was spectacular to watch the whole scene. I have a very soft part in my heart for Africa. I travelled the world since I was a kid with my parents, but somehow Africa always lets me feel grounded. Take care - Europe

An amazingly simply solution to a huge problem. This is a wonderful project to support, as it acts where the help is needed, but will never come from an instutution like the government, because it is "too low level". The most that would be done, if the lions were close to getting extinct, is fines for the ones hunting them, which will never stop things completely, as these people don't kill the lions for profit, but to protect their livelihood. The Lion Lights are simple enough to use and install that everybody can get behind the idea and your support in informing more people about the effectivity of the measure will spread it further. Humans and animals can simply live next to each other peacefully, because somebody understood both sides and found a solution that can be copied with the means the people there have available. Greatest respect to Richard for coming up with the idea and then spreading it around.

Richard’s father is so obviously proud of what his son has done. Imagine growing up and living your life only knowing the lion as an enemy, and becoming so good at defeating them in melee combat. Then your son becomes the kind of man who sees the problem for what it is, and comes up with a solution for lasting peace. What an unimaginably beautiful feeling it must be for him to know that no more boys and men need to die to protect their families’ livelihoods. And that his own son brought this about.

What an inspirational story. What a pleasant departure from urbanite concepts of what "nature" is to actual communion of this beautiful, beautiful planet of ours.

Thank you Planet Wild for sharing this inspiring story! Would be very interesting to test if a similar approach works with wolves attacking livestock, since it's one of their biggest obstacles for expanding across Europe and the main reason they're being hunted in several European countries.

Thank you, is a heartwarming story that gives me and the world hope, that we need so much now, especially when the model keeps saying that the only thing, we have to do is money at any cost... Gracias, gracias

I have to say that I am proud of him for protecting a species that we humans have nearly wiped out for selfish reasons. I love how when he thinks there is a genuine lion he stepped in front of the woman to protect her, that shows his true colors. He's a good young man.

From an engineering perspective, this is shear genius. Simple, low cost, highly effective. Richard's key insight was turning an observation into lion behaviour into an affordable solution which benefits both humans and lions. Lesser men would have sold guns and bullets, but Richard saw a better way forward for everybody. Fantastic.

Well done. Thats exactly how you achieve success. Identfy a problem, find a solution, scal, promote and sell the solution. A good way to improve your own life and the life of others.

Yes, Lion Lights can be adapted for use in other regions with different predators, like wolves, foxes, etc.

Context of my question: In the Netherlands we also have wolves these days. Here too, shooting is discussed because livestock is often killed.

I have had the same thought. It is a huge problem in several parts of Europe. Even if the light might not work as well as for the lions - we have probably much more light pollution than in those places in Africa - something different or something different in combination with light might help.
