I came to comment the same thing! I was so happy the team got the cameras that allowed them to recognize some behaviors to indicate how well a lynx is faring in the wild. I don't know if it the camera placement for the out of the box shot was intentional, and it helped to direct her into the forest! She knew there was a person on her left, immediately after release, she when she scoped quickly to the right, saw something occupying the space so that straight ahead was her best shot. Literally, lol. Took her less time to sprint out of sight than I could stand up!

We have good news from Spain. The Iberian lynx, protected for decades due to being on the verge of extinction, is no longer considered a threatened species (although of course we will continue to monitor it). This beautiful animal now lives normally in our fields.

I live in the mountains in Catalunya, with my two horses ,,2yrs ago my horse had an encounter with a lynx,,two big bite wounds and some very long deep scratchs ,,i heard the fight ,but coundnt see any of it because of the steep terraces,,my mare came galloping back down to the corral ,,,,( the wounds healed fine 😊) When i told friends who live close to my valley ,they said they often see it crossing their finca ,,also i,ve twice seen a wolf ,,so yes they are certainly around in spain , 🏞🦅🐆🪶🌄🐆

I'm in Canada and lived for some years in an area with Canada lynx. I often saw their tracks in winter but never managed to see a lynx. Too bad there were no trail cams in those days, because I usually saw the tracks in the same place. Best wishes for reintroducing your much larger and very beautiful Eurasian lynx back to their former range!

I remember fondly playing a video game in the late 2000s callen "Don Cato" that tells the story of a lynx from the alps making his way to the Harz on his own. It was a great game that teached me a lot about nature and biodiversity in Germany!

Oh wow, I had no idea this game existed. Sounds like an amazing way to teach youngsters about nature! Will definitely look it up ☺
@scifino1
@scifino1 8 күн бұрын
That game is actually available to download for free via a blog called "Werbespiel Archiv". I got it to work relatively easily with Lutris and WINE. It's only available in German, as it was commissioned by the German federal ministry for the environment and seemingly only targeted German citizens who could order the CD containing the game for free.

They were reintroduced into Switzerland around 40 years ago. Funny enough, i did see them in the wild multiple times, when i was a kid. always was a magical moment. even though there are many more these days, never came across one in the last 25 years. guess they became more shy, as the no longer have human contact when set free into the wild. or maybe it's just bad luck on my part.

Great story @planetwild ! I always wonder why there aren't smaller GPS trackers instead of the chunky ones?
@planet-wild
@planet-wild Жыл бұрын
Well, it's always a trade off. These trackers need to have at least 18 month of battery life while sending their GPS position as often as possible, and at the same time they need to be robust and not too heavy. It basically comes down to the state of battery technology. Powering a tracker for this long isn't currently possible with smaller batteries 😕

Also I hope it’s possible to create wildlife corridors that can interconnect the released lynxes so they don’t suffer degradation in the long run. Finally I wish your website would state clearly what it costs to be a member, how to join without having to submit your email first. I have seen other projects which do that upfront like Mossy Earth. Lynx is one of cutest wild cats, I like Pumas, Phanters, Lions, Tigers and defienitily Leopards and Lumileopards. Wild cats and ancestors of today's cats are really interesting. Maybe those brushed ears are to percibe the wind
@planet-wild

An interesting guess! Why do you think it would need to feel the wind with such a precision?
@ManuelCam

@@planet-wild maybe it can help them to predict the weather and know if it's gonna rain, and having a lot of precision on that could help them to know how the weather it's gonna change before they prey notice it, and that could allow the linx to predict the behaviour of their preys

Maybe brushed ears evolved without having a purpose. I've heard that as long as features of creatures don't make the latter go extinct the feature may stay--

I saw another video on lynxes that had a theory that the ear tufts may be help with communicating with other lynxes.

Our linx in South Africa is a bit more pinkish red, has the same colour spots only under the chest and the belly and is a bit more slender. I believe it is our most beautiful cat.

What abeautiful, majestic creature! thank you for your work! I think maybe the fur on their ears help them to sense the direction of the wind. ?

Thank you so much for these videos - I so appreciate your approach to the wildlife videos where they are "young kid friendly " where I do not have to explain certain mating topics too soon for my very nature minded little ones!

My girlfriend said their ears might act like some type of sub-whisker that helps them sense low frequency or low vibration sounds. Maybe a range that their whiskers don't pick up but because they're on their ears, they do.

This is so awesome to see. I live in Saxony -Anhalt and just went to the Harz Mountains last week and was lucky enough to see a lynx in the wild, just looking at me and than going its way.
