Wow, can't believe how many things i learned from watching this video. I swear all i did until now was just randomly drive the SRV until i got a DOT on the actual radar, not the sonar, because i just couldn't understand how the sonar worked, i just went to those long lines on it but never found anything.. Thank you for teaching us, very helpful video!

This video is still highly instructional even though it's 3 years old; thank you. Your advice on reading the SRV's sonar and listening to the pings was particularly helpful. After watching your video and doing about half an hour of prospecting on Skarimpos 8 A (for AFM Refill materials), I started to recognise Bronzite Chondrite and Mesosiderite just by hearing their sonar pings. I even found a crash site with two Occupied Escape Pods, some personal firearms, and narcotics. Given I was in an Adder that had only a 2E Cargo Rack, I salvaged the pods and turned them in at Wrangell Port. You've probably already figured this out since the upload of this video, but it's probably still worth a mention here: fairly often, the pronunciation of complex-looking English words can be derived from stringing the pronunciation of multiple words together - this is how many KZbinrs pronounce "Gutamaya". In the case of "mesosiderite", I pronounce it using a combination of the following: - "me-" in "mesa" - "so" - "-sider" in "consider" - "-rite" in "meteorite"

The wave scanner always seemed backwards to me. I would think something further away would have a smaller angular size and therefor be smaller on the scanner, and as you get right up to it it gets bigger and starts to fill the scanner until you destroy it. But maybe they did it that way so it would be easier to see more things at once.
@BooneHighItsTime
@BooneHighItsTime 5 жыл бұрын
I think their idea is that when you're far away the scanner only picks up a vague signature of the minerals. As you get closer the scanner can focus more clearly to find the source.
@ScientistMan96
@ScientistMan96 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, that entirely depends on the type of scanner being used. In the case of radar(Radiation) or Lidar(Light), then yes, you would be correct. However, Sonar(Sound) will react the same as the wave scanner in game, as it uses a sound wave pulse, which then reflects off an object, and back towards the sensor. However, due to the way sound waves works, the further away you are from the source (or reflection) of the wave, the more spread out that wave will be. Like dropping something into a body of water. Granted, Sonar requires a medium for sound to travel in, as well as near silent ambient conditions for the sensor, so the wave scanner in game isn't exactly a Sonar.

I've always wondered about the System Reserve Level - some sources seem to say that it only affects commodity mining in asteroids, but not materials from asteroids. I haven't seen anything concrete about how it affects planetary materials. Since you make sure to select pristine systems in this video, is there in fact an effect?

The randomness on this is very well mixed, because I was on a rocky ice planet with 10.6% metal, and I found two groups of 3 metallic meteorites very close from the ship. That is when I decided to search a video talking about this, "how to choose a planet".

I'm not sure if anyone reads this. But I still have some things unclear: 1. Are the targetable (white dot) rocks the only ones you can farm? When I see that 20% of a planet is say Iron, I don't understand why I need to roam around to find a rock can't I just dig and get a ton instantly? So I am not very clear about this targetable rock mechanic. 2. These rocks seem to be very few and only near these geological signals. Do I understand correctly, I need to scan a planet with surface scanner then land at these sites and collect the 5-20 rocks and move to another site? 3. Do the sites respawn, and if yes how? A certain amount of time? 4. I seemed to find rocks on wave scanner that were not targetable. Signal got really narrow I literally bumped to a big rock but there was no white dot on radar and couldn't target anything. What does that mean? Could really not understand these details yet. I do wonder around and collect some rocks, so far at least I can replenish the SRV fuel and ammo I spend while doing this stuff. :)
@dylanf7990
@dylanf7990 5 жыл бұрын
1. Yes the targetable rocks are the only way to farm materials 2. Nope you don't need to scan the planet or be near a geological sight however geological sights *can* have higher spawn rates of certain materials however most of the time of just land on a flat surface as the more you travel the more rocks you will find 3. Dunno 4. You shouldn't find untargetable rocks on the wave scanner, are you sure it isn't something else

I really wish Frontier would put way more of this kind of information in the bloody game. Even if they did a guide that you had to pay extra for ,that explained EXACTLY how USSs, Material drops, Data scanning etc. all worked. So then (like in any other game I've ever played) if you wanted Zirconium, it said go to HD 41111 head north, bang material. Rather than us using 3rd party tools to find a planet with the highest % drop rate, and then driving aimlessly praying for the right mark to appear on the scanner!!! Sorry, I've gone a little Space Mad, I'm currently stocking up on materials for Engineers!!! o7!!!
@johnmackey2452
@johnmackey2452 6 жыл бұрын
This is the number one time sink to engineering. Sometimes you can go gather all your minerals in 10 minutes. Other times you can spend 6 hours without getting enough to do your rolls. It's all about lucking out by finding the metallic meteorite clusters. Those are the only ones that reliably drop rare materials. Any type CAN drop ANY type of mineral but meteorites are the money makers. Especially since they tend to spawn in clusters of 3.
@figjam9530
@figjam9530 6 жыл бұрын
10 minutes? 10 MINUTES!!! where the actual fuck can you gather that quickly outside of a meta alloy forest? co- ordinates, or i call bullshit. EDIT, the single shared instances like lava spouts don't count, obviously, they are always farmed out.

i've done all the tricks; landing in a polar crater on a popular planet for gathering. i'll still be driving for actual hours to find one node. it took me less time to find the crashed anaconda than to find a mining node. that's not an exaggeration. a crashed ship in the bottom of a pitch-black mile deep planet spanning canyon was easier to find.
