Thanks for the comment!. I use a keyboard and mouse with pretty much the "as standard" setup, sensitivity and keyboard config. I usually jump to third person to get a fix on my enemy (or jet stream) and back to first person to line up and shoot (third person also good to help you not crash into team mates!). You can also press the middle mouse button if you just want to look up or from side to side within the cockpit, but the ship design for Vanu means the wings block your side view a bit!

Yes, depending on the situation in a dogfight I sometimes go third person (if I've totally lost the guy) or not, if I have a general idea where he is so I can shoot faster if he lines up in front of me, would be nice to look behind (even nicer to have oculus rift support and keep your head on a swivel, I believe star citizen will have it)

In game press escape, in the bottom right go to settings, then key-bindings, vehicle, there you can set up strafe left and right to A/D, left and right keys to turn left turn right!

flying high just means people can't see you from above (kills one angle of attack) and you have a better field of view on the aircraft below which you can drop down on, but you can still be seen, also means you can pick up speed fast if you need to by nose diving... flying low gives you a good chance of dipping behind cover if you can master quick landings. Good AA cover in your territory means enemy enters and dies, bad AA cover means enemy can follow you back to your base (does happen)

I will try to get something up on that soon for you. For the most part I have default settings (probably because in early beta the keys kept resetting so I just got used to them the way they are) the only changes are my mouse sensitivity is turned up full for the aircraft so I can turn faster, I also have adjustable sensitivity on the fly on my mouse so I can drop it down for fine aiming when need be.

Best defense is a good offence, take a few tight turns and then try to turn into your attacker, if you run for too long against a good pilot they will just pick you off from range. I think I mentioned in one of my videos, a good wing man is your best bet because they will start to attack the guy who is on your back and it will usually cause the enemy to disengage. If you are close to friendly territory(preferably with AA), then twisting and turn your way back towards it.

General certs, if you are spending a lot of time in the air, acquisition timer can be good (unless you are kicking ass and always last 15 minutes at least, in which case a new craft will be up before you die). In terms of performance, I like my afterburner to last a little longer and top speed to be faster so I can catch up with my target if it is running, after that improved vertical thrust is nice... certs keep changing though, afterburner can't be adjusted through certs any more

Actually it is the nature of the video to get as much information as possible into the shortest possible amount of time, which is the kind of video I look for myself for content such as this. I'm sure it isn't for everyone, but many people prefer this way so that is who it is aimed at. I'm an educator as a profession so I do present in many different ways, this is the presentation style of choice for me for these videos! Also, I still disagree with flares, I usually engage in areas with cover

Thanks for the compliment, although the video is a bit out of date, basic flight techniques can be used for flight in most games (did one for arma 3 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqXFlaeLaLmros0) on my other channel recently and noticed I was talking about many of the same things with subtle differences)

Try to attack from a little behind the front line, only flying into enemy territory to finish off a target since armor isn't exactly the strong point of any air attack vehicle. For missiles, you can often fly full afterburner away from them, flying close to geometry and they'll not hit you, if they do, it should only take a little over half your health, so land and repair (hence no need for flares). I would go for a secondary weapon like the dual photon pods, more bang for your buck

That is a bit of a problem with the fact that a ship can almost stop in mid air and keep turning, so battles sometimes get close. Best bet is to make sure you are turning with the enemy, try to pull tighter turns than he is and watch for his jet trails (or smoke trails if you've hit him a few times already). If you think the enemy is in the same situation of turning and can't see you clearly, gaining altitude can help you get a sight on him (and quick speed) when you drop down again.

Easiest way is to level out your craft, pull back on S to kill the speed, then tap CTRL to move towards the ground, when close to the ground, keep pulling back on S, in this game instead of that dropping all your thrust it actually sends a little and stops you crashing, then let go of all your keys to land softly (tapping S now and then if you think you are dropping too fast, but should just land itself at this point)

Hard one to counter esp. when both pilots pulling good tight turns, I usually throw a bit of thrust to get me out of the area then turn right back in, it is a risk though because if they manage to stick to your tail as you do it you'll be in trouble... the best way out of a situation like that is a good wingman and a lot of communication. You'll see the name Dirtmonkey in a lot of the videos, I usually fly with him and we try to pull enemy off each other in this situation.

I usually save my after burners for a lock situation, then hit them hard, fly close to the ground and fly between whatever you can, if you get it right, the rocket will hit something else and leave you alone, if you get it wrong, make sure you have enough health to take a hit!

You should have the default cannon with a secondary weapon (which you'll have to buy with Cert points) which you can switch between just as you would any normal infantry weapon. Not sure how much that has changed since beta though since I haven't clocked the hours to get enough certs for the weapon I want on release.

well i have to argue against flares, i've never encountered a craft that actually has time to lock missiles on, I do recommend rocket pods, and if flying the reaver in particular, get a better weapon or get some upgrades as it is rather weak.

I am using a mouse and keyboard at the moment. I have a joystick but haven't got around to trying that out yet and I've got quite comfortable with the current controls (which are easier to deal with when you jump out to repair, no need to switch from joystick to mouse to walk around). Might take a look at some point and let you know if I find anything

By "utility item" I initially meant what I should put in my actual utility slot, not the weapon pylons. Reconsideing, however, the real thing I want advice on is what I should go for first: composite armor, flares, dogfighting airframe, maybe even scout radar (does it let me see other nearby planes on radar? That would be VERY helpful, since knowing where another aircraft is the first step to getting behind). Or should I get something else? (I already have the hailstorm laser and rocket pods)

Did the videos help? First time I tried to fly in general I crashed and blew up, but with practice from other games I got there. A lot of the techniques from the video can apply to any aircraft in any game (I flew a lot in BF2, BC2, loved the Huey in BC2 vietnam, BF3 and even Arma2 (that is a lot harder to fly in since their is a feel of weight and momentum). Scythe likes to float, which is a very nice thing to have when learning to fly!

Great information here! thanks for putting this up! As a piece of constructive feedback, your clips at many points don't convey the point that your audio is explaining. (someo f them do but most dont). for the next video perhaps you could think of doing something like: you make a point, while making this point there is a clip DIRECTLY explaining this point, and a little bit of black screen before and after that point/clip... to space it out for visual learners. I think this is great tho!

If a really good enemy is behind you, then chances are you won't get behind him very easy unless 1. he makes a mistake or 2. you have a wing-man that can hurt him enough that he tries to run (which is in a way another mistake because then he'll have two people trying to kill him). The comment about staying close to friendly support is an important one, if an ACE gets on your tail and you can't shake him, try to fly back near friendly AA support, he'll have to pull off or die trying to kill you

You suggest that the reaver is great for escape, but i disagree. A default mosquito can fly at equal speed to a reaver with racer frame 3, so the reaver only has the speed advantage if it equips afterburner pods. A reaver cannot escape in standard air combat and has difficulty chasing as well.

And at the very least, the flares give you a chance to turn around and shoot your attacker as he expects you to keep running and is waiting for his next lock.

I don't like showing myself getting blown up!!! (except for crashing myself into the ground at the end of the video) and didn't capture others getting insta gibbed. Latest patches have changed it a bit, I seem to be taking at least a hit from a tank or rocket now and they leave just a tiny bit of health, but with enough damage you lose health and eventually lose control. You also get a cool smoke and sparks inside the cockpit effect. AA never really insta gibbed though, just give fast pain.

How do you do constant barrel rolls with the mouse? I have to pick it up and move it across the pad several times to get a couple rolls in. Joysticks make it easier, but I can't shoot worth my weight in scrap metal with it.

I try to attack anything, but I usually end up with 3+ missiles on my tail and machine guns hitting me from some unknown location. Maybe I'm just a bad pilot. BTW, what utility item should I get? I would normally go straight for flares, but they only mean a few seconds of respite before ore missiles show up.

Air to Air missiles don't seem to hit me and if they do, I just repair and shoot whatever shot at me, so I don't think they are THAT important, but if I had a lot of certs to spare, I might get them eventually... I'm more into going for the kill shot so I'd go for stronger weapons to take out ground targets first... air targets, one burst close range, problem solved

Great tips... Urgh your server looks peaceful... Every-time i fly no matter where i always have people locking on or enemy turrets/skyguard/MAX aswell as mosquitoes.. Its annoying :@ Do you have any maneuverability tips when dogfighing in the air.. I always seem to get in to an issues of 'chasing my tale' kind of thing and get lose and confused. I've tried flipping 180 on x axis so im upside down, then pulling mouse back and flipping it 180 on y axis to do 360 of current pos, doesn't work well..

This isn't an English paper you are reading in class. slow down, relax, and make sure we can actually grasp what you are saying. Don't go from point to point in one breath. But other than that, good tips and pointers. But I do feel flares are something every pilot should get. There isn't always something to fly around
