Tavelo Attack owner here: It's freaking fantastic. And paired with my set of Craft Racing Works CS5060 wheels it's the lightest bike I've tested. Lighter than my Giant Propel Advanced pro. You can easily get this bike down to 6.8kg and lighter. My only criticism is the frame could use a little more reach in the geometry department. I have long arms. Thankfully Tavelo's latest release with their Arrow frameset completely solves that issue for me. I'm really tempted to get that frame in hand and donor all the components and wheels from my Tavelo Attack.

On the endurance bike chat, I'm a young guy riding a aluminium cannondale synapse, starting to do a few races events etc this season. My first event was an hour long university TTT, and talking with my teammates afterwards I realised that while I was not the most aero, I was able to hold a better position and put down the power with less discomfort. I'm just racing for fun really and am very realistic about my prospects, and riding on UK roads especially there's a lot of advantages to training on an endurance bike here. If I keep racing in seasons to come, I'd look at getting something a bit more aggressive, but I think it makes getting into riding in that way a lot more accessible, especially from a budget/entry level standpoint.

You boys are spot on when it comes to the way cycling in countries like Australia and the US need to operate at the development level. We were having this conversation the other day. As Director of a new Domestic Elite Team in the USA, there is no point in trying to discuss ROI to potential sponsors. Even the most visible teams in the USA like Legion have no visibility or reach outside of the racing community. It has to be approached with a mindset of sponsors doing it out of charity and trying to increase accessibility and participation in the sport. ROI can't happen until the sport becomes less niche and has much more public and visible participation.

I would also have the same problems with aching legs in the evening after a big day on the bike. Saw a doctor about it and they diagnosed me with restless legs syndrome. They told me to take magnesium before bed and it genuinely helped with my aching legs. I’ve also found stretching before bed makes a massive difference to relax my legs

You did it the right way - had an issue, had it diagnosed and then applied a treatment. Unfortunately the supplement industry is built upon 'fixing' issues that don't actually exist (or are self diagnosed!) - here take a tonne of this particular chemical it'll 'fix' or even 'improve' you as we've discovered a 'secret life hack'. It 's irresponsible and the whole industry exists because it's unregulated. Well done for doing it the the correct way! Folks, if you have an issue, go to a doctor and get blood work done - you can have your cholesterol, diabetes, testosterone, Prostate-Specific-Antigen all done at the same time - and magnesium levels will be delivered to you without even asking!

I enjoyed the endurance bike discussion a lot. I'm a proud 63 year-old, diabetic, artificially-hipped MAMIL who's never raced and who has loved bikes and bicycling since I was a FKIW (fat kid in wool) and Merckx was in the peloton. It would be insane for me to choose a road (or any) bike with any other top consideration than comfort. Comfort means more riding, faster riding, better fitness, and a greater ability to keep pace with my riding companions. There's an inherent problem with bike brands positioning $10-$15k unicorns as tent-pole brand icons. It may be that the end of the endurance "moment" has overlapped with the rise of the gravel bike as the dominant force in bicycle retailing. Canyon did really well with the Endurace by marketing its attributes. Gravel bikes may be an easier sell, because right out of the chute, they're more appropriate in terms of geometry, gearing, and tire clearance for more people. I'm building up my second gravel bike. I last built up a road bike in 2021, today...I'd probably just skip that exercise entirely and just have a set of road wheels for the gravel bike.

MAMIL here! I completely agree with your sentiments about Endurance bikes. I recently moved from a Trek Emonda that weighed to 6.6 kg to a Trek Domane that weighs closer to 9 kg (that includes my flat repair kit in the downtube). Not only is the Domane more comfortable and capable, it is just as fast everywhere except steep climbs. I really wish the industry did a better job of marketing these bikes. Maybe we should start calling them GT (Grand Touring) bikes to steal some marketing from sports cars. 😀

Chris, I'm 41 and I've got to say the endurance bike is now probably about the perfect frame type. I had a super aggressive TCR last year, and it coincided with a major herniated disc issue in my back, that I am still suffering the effects of (still have a numb foot/toe, burning sensation in legs). After moving on from this, I went to a giant propel. Its much more comfortable, mainly due to the reach and more 'level' top tube and stack height, but it strangely feels slow for me. I just cant get it rolling at as fast a speed as any of my other bikes (including a canyon endurace). From there, I move to a giant defy, and I'm straight back into my fastest riding, ever.... it just moves at speed, and I don't need to 'work' at it. It's comfy, fast and also looks great.
@rowemeister837 ай бұрын
as I side note, I also purchased a giant revolt x advanced pro 0 - with 45m tyres - and that is also very comfortable and fast. Its around 15% slower that my road bike, on road surfaces, and insanely faster on gravel (of course). So if I went 30kms ph on my tcr, I manage around 26kms ph on the road on a full suspension gravel bike, with huge tyres, for the same wattage. I can live with that. I'm considering ditching the road bikes, and staying gravel.
@reid37377 ай бұрын
Thank you for acknowledging endurance bikes are just fine for racing. I have a defy because I have short arms and long legs and the geo fits me better. But go compare the geo and what will you find? The tcr is 10mm longer reach, 20mm shorter stack, and 0.5 deg steeper HTA. That's almost nothing. These bikes are very similar. You could probably setup a defy like a tcr and vice versa with the right spacers/stem combo.
@gregmorrison73207 ай бұрын
Yes! I have a TCR and I have a Synapse that I raced for years, the setup is exactly the same! The Synapse has no headset spacers, the TCR has maybe 20mm, but the reach, drop etc all end up the same.
@davidgeorge92337 ай бұрын
Those geometry differences may be significant for some riders though, could make or break the bike. You can put on a shorter stem but adding stack height isn’t so easy.
@reid37377 ай бұрын
@@davidgeorge9233 It's true, they are different, but my point is they aren't crazy different to the point where there is no overlap. There is quite a bit of overlap. And your point definitely stands for me. I use nearly every bit of my Defy's stack height, only a few spacers on top of the stem.
@future627 ай бұрын
I think endurance bikes have a future; they just need a rebrand. TCR/Propel = race bikes. Defy = road bike. I like the Defy in particular as it doesn't have gimmicks like suspension or snack boxes. Just a very light and comfortable bike- a MAMIL's dream. Its geometry is only like 10-15mm away from something like the Aethos, which with a little more stack is exactly how high end road bikes should be designed and marketed IMO.

I agree with Chris - there is no difference between a "race bike" and an "endurance bike" other than what the manufacturers label the bike. I can achieve the same body position with either frame. It doesnt matter if the "race bike" allows you to get into a more aero position if you can only hold that position for a few minutes.

Totally agree about race series and sponsors. I think the starting point in Aus is to get sponsors for races so the entry fees are low. Keep race formats simple and avoid teams, this allows any talent to have a go. Triathlon NSW has this for juniors, a series of 5-6 races at minimal cost and a generous sponsor who get no ROI but do it for the development of the sport.

If the Jesse's fallback is to go with Ultegra it would make sense to do the build with a crankset that has the Shimano compatible 24mm axle such as the Magene power meter one. That would save the hassle of changing bottom brackets if the step to Ultegra is warranted. Admittedly it likely would come in a bit heavier but still the Magene cranks are reasonably close in weight to Ultegra ones.

Bought the Ltwoo ERX in Jan this year and everything is surprisingly good. The 3 biggest gripes i have with this groupset is 1. I wish the shift buttons were more pronounced, sometimes you don't know if it's been pressed or not. 2. There is no setting to do seqential shiifting like Sram 3. Customer service is absolutely non-existent. Other than that is has been working great.
@eto23527 ай бұрын
I can't wait to see Jesse go full steaming red rage when the ERX fails and glitches. Please keep the cameras running! 😆 I want Jesse to get 105Di2. Dead reliable and smooth. The weight is in the crankset, so if you skip that, it's nearly the equal of Ultegra. Big difference is no servowave or extra buttons. That way, we can get Jesse's honest feedback on the frameset and wheels.
@rodforney71847 ай бұрын
I also think he should stick with what he is comfortable with 100% as he probably will be using it on another frame at some point. As he wont be able to stay on rim brakes for much longer. 😢 If he uses LTWOO they should give him the group set, if it's as good as 105 his review would mean a lot for many potential buyers. While I get the low cost approach he is using I think Trace Velo has already shown unless you have some mechanical aptitude these may not be the best choices. While I don't know for sure, from what I gather Chris and Jesse are not mechanically inclined.

As someone who has been working in Giant stores for the last ten years I can tell you I love the three Defys I have had. TCR is great and just quietly the TCX makes a killer road bike ( have had 6). I feel the Defy is so underrated mainly because of strangely worded and presented reviews full of preconceived ideas and assumptions based on misconceptions. The issue that rarely gets discussed in online reviews is the importance of stack, reach, headtube angle and wheelbase in regards to total ride experience. IMHO saving 20 watts here or there is nothing if you are bleeding energy through vibration and overly aggressive positions. I couldn't get a Defy when I needed to get a new bike so I have set my TCR up with wider tyres, 0 degree shorter stem and sorry Dave it doesn't make it a Defy. I love the TCR and love the Defy. Both sit comfortably next each other in the Giant road bike range.

As a guy who owns a Revolt Advanced Pro and the previous Defy Advanced Pro they ride very similarly and there is very little speed lost with the gravel bike with a descent wheel and tyre combo. Plus with the added ability to go off road it’s a bike that will suit more riders. I’ve also owned the TCR and it was sensationally quick but as a mamil I used to find it far too low and long to ride for any period of time so sold it shortly after.

G'day Jessie & Chris, I have a little inside info for you. Although the Tavelo Arrow is a more aero than the Tavelo Attack, depending on your frame size the geometry is slightly less aggressive. For this reason, I wouldn't be surprised if the Tavelo Attack would be a better race bike? Also, their frame weights seem to be heavier than advertised on the Panda website. I have built a Tavelo Attack with Cybrei carbon cranks, CRW 5060 wheels, Avian super lightweight handlebar & a Durace groupset. The bike weights 6.5kg. If you were to build a Canyon to be 6.5kg it would probably cost you well over $10000. Also, I own a Canyon Aeroad and when it comes to feel, the Tavelo feels every bit as good. the Tavelo is now my preferred race bike for road races. In terms of building a tavelo frame, the seatpost mount for the saddle is fiddly until you work it out but the rest is straight forward. Another thing I would try is the Cybrei 54/38 chainring with an 11/34 cassette on the back. This combination provides you with plenty of gears at both ends. In terms of price, if you can wait for the Black Friday sales in November, you will save thousands. Just sharing my thoughts.

Great call … Jesse this is a great adventure - to watch! If you ride the bike competitively in anger with positive performance results it’ll be the biggest thing this channel has done to bring “China brands/Panda Podium” to the western market. My query would be, if Giant (possibly Trek) etc are forced to drop prices post pandemic boom times in late 24, then there is a real possibility a like for like bike from such a brand can be picked up. Let’s see..,

Listening to you talk about gearing is making me laugh. After more than a decade without riding much, I've been getting back into it but when I was last riding much, I was racing for a boutique Southern California shop so my bike's an aggressively fit Colnago with Super Record on it so I'm equally pained by the thought of swapping out nostalgic components, and the thought of trying to push my old gearing 😅

"They" need to engage with the councils of the big cities and make cycling races a community event. They shut down roads for council festivals once a year, why can't they shut down a little course in an inner city suburb and make a small cycling festival. Do this every week/month showcasing a new council. Creates more cycling events, boosts local engagement, and hopefully makes the sport more popular. Just something ive been thinking of lately...

Endurance bikes need to be sold like luxury sedans vs sports cars. Both can go just as fast or faster but the endurance bikes is going to have a smoother ride

This was top 3 Nero shows (without special guests) for me, real interesting talk around the Endurance bike, Coyle's build & the rebranded NRS. Chris, if you ever decided to dig deeper into what happened with the Nero team, as well as get a guest on to discuss some of the behind the scenes stuff, it would be an all time episode. Just on prices that Jessie mentioned with his new build & a Canyon... We're really not looking at huge differences between Chinese & mainstream brands it seems.

Regarding the new Tavelo: the frond end is almost a 1:1 copy of the Stevens Arcalis, the rear end is the old Tavelo. Also Bross is finally starting to move with overseas distribution. There's a thread with more details on it on weightweenies.

Endurance bike screams 'Sunday long ride'. The pitch should be storage for tools & spares, extra bottle holders, comfortable, on board nutrition storage yet still fast. I think canyon Endurace is nailing it in this segment (coming from a Defy owner)

Your discussion of that proposed racing series and its pitfalls provided good background and insight, and I agree that it would be so much better to dial down the overhead and make it more user accessible for all ages and experience levels, with some pure puttering for the younger set and their parents. And that was a cool thing about the movie Breaking Away, the community-style races which were held for a time here in the States. And I got to participate in a few of them, too, and they were so much fun, competitions for competitors of all ilks, just run your basic 10-speed and pretend you're a pro. And my first of those was in Frankfurt in August 1975, a race in downtown Frankfurt for American teen military dependents and it was organized by the USO with free 7-Up goodies for each participant, plus, woohoo, one of those orange safety flags on a pole for mounting on the rear axle or something. And I wore a special T-shirt for the occasion, a brand-new STP T-shirt. I had to look the part. 😀

Jesse can you try and get hold of the Wheeltop EDS groupset for the build? They don't currently have options to ship to australia but if you can get hold of it I'd love to hear your thoughts!

One of the 1500, loved the race weekend videos, miss having the conduit to the domestic racing scene that is otherwise invisible outside the local crit. Found the talk about supporting the races & riders fascinating, & support the ideas around reducing the barriers to entry. I would follow an NRS equivalent if it was available to be followed, & attend a circuit race in my part of town (ACT). Stromlo crit, Black Mtn Hill climb TT, Parliamentary triangle circuit road race. As a previous volunteer on a now folded NRS team, the racing is great to watch, just not available to be. If it was my money, I’d give it to you blokes to have a crack. Keep up the good work on the show.

I have a carbon disk break synapse from 2018 and have just got a giant propel. So far as much as the propel feels faster on paper (or Strava) it's actually been no faster for me at all. For reference I'm 6'5" mid 30s FTP of around 350W and about 97kg, average speeds for solo rides (on both bikes) still around 32kmph

Yep, the more bikes you own the more you realize it's not about the bike.

@@gregmorrison7320 Yeah definitely! I mean I'd always kind of suspected it, I've always managed to keep up with lads on way fancier bikes and as a dad of 2 young kids it's definitely not because I've been training loads more than them lol. But yeah definitely has confirmed those feelings! Unfortunately means I can't pay off my lack of training though 😅

I love Jesse’s idea of all China bike. But I’d say go for a shimano groupset. The groupset is the heart of the bike, if it doesn’t work well you won’t want to even spin around the 5k test track

Got to admit I got the Pillar triple magnesium tablets based on a previous video of yours (so yes advertising works :) ). I'm a really poor sleeper, 60 years old with the usual trips to the bog overnight :). I wear a whoop and have noticed a considerable (not marginal) difference to my sleep since taking the tablets. I've gone from getting between 4 - 6 hours to getting 8 hours. I'm actually getting into the green recovery area on the whoop more consistently whilst still being able to get 14hours+ of riding a week. Nothing else of my routine has changed
