@57:00 I’m the average punter/weekend warrior that doesn’t race and I’m a bit slower. I do care about performance, it is top priority and I can afford what ever I want. In 2023 when I got back into cycling I bought 5 new top end bikes that would be the financial equivalent of a brand new car because the tech was so exciting. Because of that tech and the pursuit of marginal gains I do find myself at the front of the pack with my buddies who are not as well informed but far more powerful riders and it feels great. I also enjoy splitting hairs in the tech and I can afford to do it. And quit frankly I find myself annoyed listening to people say “what I need” when that opinion is shaped by budget that does not apply to me. It’s fucking irritating and if I want to spend $1000 on what is only 0.2 watts for me but 5 watts to you, that’s my business and you don’t need to see the value that I do, that’s for me to worry about. So yes, do not underestimate the weekend warrior.

Bigger tyres, but they also know more about carbon layup. Those early disc bikes they took their rim brake bike and reinforced the rear triangle to make sure it could handle the new forces. Now a few generations later they understand the forces around discs and they can build a compliant bike that won't fail without overbuilding it.

Happy 100th. Love the chat. I think the conversation on the “bikes for elite vs average “ cyclists may need better context. I think all of us watching your show care about cycling and want the best performance we can get for the money we can afford to spend. What most of us don’t know is what difference does it make to say buy an Sworks sl8 vs a lower model of the same bike. If you can afford 20k and are after an Specialised, your probably buying Sworks unless someone can tell you that basically the lower level frame performance is the same as the top level. (Though even then you’re probably still buying the Sworks). Again love the show, and your talking about the Chinese bikes and how they compare against more main stream bikes are great in terms of helping people understand the value for money vs performance question most of us are thinking about when getting a new bike

Chris, wind deflection example. Think of superbly ballistic (aero) bullet. The faster its velocity the less effect (drift) a crosswind has on its trajectory. However, as it slows down, crosswinds really affect it, to a point where when slow enough, it can blow it totally off target.
@mattbettwy40696 күн бұрын
The whole “punters with a 250 watt ftp don’t need to care cause their speed isn’t relevant” is still just incorrect imo. Punters still move fast, just less often. My FTP is 260, and I missed the podium in my categories state champs criterium by half a wheel after a 15 second 61kmh sprint. half a wheel at those speeds would come from splitting hairs, and If I was on an actual aero bike vs my 2018 emonda for that sprint it could have been a lot more than half a wheel gained. Yeah my training rides average under 30kmh way more often than I sprint at 60+, but most people don’t care how fast their bike is during any old training ride. People don’t judge a bikes performance against their average rides while shopping, only the conditions of their most important rides- which are often their fastest ones.

I did a gran fondo worlds in Albi in France a few years back. I can't say I'm ever rushing back. It was a dogs breakfast just in the start area. Think crazy large peletons, so dangerous just in the roll out, and what would be worse is bunches coming together. That's even worse. There was some horror stories coming out of the Perth one a few years back in this regard. As prestigious as it would be to win, with the numbers of riders out there, finding the front may actually be difficult. I also feel like it's a massive money making exercise for the UCI.

I may be way out of date but I did the Worlds back in the day (2013?) when it was in Trento in Italy (having qualified from one Amy’s ride). I recall 3 different groups coming together at the top of the first climb with carnage ensuing. Never been so relieved to hit the bottom of a descent intact in my life - bodies everywhere. I did the Amy’s thing a couple of times around that time and it felt much better organised and not dangerous at all. Proud of my sub 3 hour one year - have never been as good since! I think it may have gone the other way to the one you are facing though as the Skene’s climb was after the Ocean Road.

@@Richard-qe7st , sounds familiar. Albi I think may have been 2017 or so. I can't be bothered looking it up, but thereabouts. Distance was decent, at 150km or so. There was 'neutral' water, or what in fact was a 'neutral lack of water'. It was pretty farcical really. My mate who was at Albi also, he crashed out, early, like in the first 10km or so. I wish they would've included HED, Campy, and Reynolds wheels in that wind tunnel test

Congratulations on 100 shows guys. Best cycling chat out there. Next stop Netflix 😃. As a serial Scott owner great to hear some chat. Didn't realise they were a non entity in Oz, explains why they're hardly mentioned! Poor distribution in US also I believe. Guess we're spoilt in the UK (on one thing at least, everything else is 🐕 💩😂

In regards to the UCI Grand Fondo, I’ve done the one in Niseko Japan twice. They did start us in our age groups but because of the neutral start to KM 0 all the age groups basically caught up to each other easily. FYI, Japan is hosting the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo so there is another opportunity to go to one on this side of the world.

I went to Denmark… a circus, 178 riders, narrow roads and with only 950 meters so nobody got away. The UCI again did an appalling job. Ps longest climb was a few minutes only sadly.

Keep up the excellent work. I would love to sit at a bar and 'talk bikes' with other bike nerds. You guys are likely as close as I will get.

Re: Felt Bikes- I am a fan of felt, my partner & I both I use the VR60 (budget version, 2018) for our commutes and light off-road riding. For an aluminum budget frame, it’s not super heavy. I have used it for cross, gravel racing and riding, and of course just commuting and I find it pretty damn valuable for its cost. It has no business doing the Canada belgian waffle ride last year but it survived. My partner probably wouldn’t even notice the weight if the VR60 if she didn’t have an FR5 (2018) for her faster riding.

That chainring behind Chris looks like it's moving. Very trippy

The Assioma hack was great for me because I was helped by the wider Q factor and had plenty of SPD bodies around. I have the SHI version.
