For anyone interested in how the music of Patapon works for the sake of creation, I understand the structure of Patapon's music; each four beats is its own "sound", and they get pieced together one at a time as a stage progresses. There's usually two or four basic tracks that loop one after the other, without any commands put in. After the first command, a layer of looping is added on top of the original beat, which is usually a simple flavor sound; bass, faster drums, etc. This is masked heavily by the player's inputs, and the vocals of the Patapons themselves, which are designed to add a lot more to the simplistic background song; hence why they may sound different than you remember when you listen to the song without the player's drums. After the third timely command in a row, a dedicated track plays for the following return vocals, which transitions into the later pre-Fever music. The music takes a bit of a shift, becoming much more lively and fleshed out, and the vocals become much more... well, vocal. The original beat is often done away with for favor of the flavor level, which becomes the beat of the new music. After five more beats, another layer that often defines the music's feeling for the rest of the song adds in, finalizing the pre-Fever mode music. Once again, the repetition is usually completely masked by the drums and the vocals, making this particular mode of designing progressive level music exceedingly smart. On the fourth command after the original eight (or in total, the 12th command), another dedicated track plays should the command not come through false, which creates a quick lull in the song to transition into *FEVER MODE*. In Fever Mode, the entire track pumps up to 11, and the music becomes extremely energetic. Every one command and response, one track is player, then the next command and response has a similar but slightly note-changed follow-up. Then, every four commands and responses, there's a shift two a different two tracks that switch off. Some of the songs vary on this a bit, and it's honestly always been a bit difficult for me to pinpoint, as I can't not get into the music once Fever kicks in. For this, I re-listened to and did my best to pick apart the theme for Centura from Patapon 2, hence why some of my examples more specifically point to it. I feel like this song would have felt better if not for the fact that it sounded less like a Patapon level, and more like just its own song inspired by the Patapon sound. I feel like Sebass 87's Fanmade Patapon Theme (Patapon 3) video they made inspired by this was much better, for the fact that they held much more to the original style of Patapon's incredible music-making. I need a life.
