I loved Matt’s answer about lessons. I’ve had lessons for 26 years. A non-horse friend asked when I would no longer need lessons. I answered “never”. I explained that I would always need a trainer to keep my bad habits in check, catch any potential new bad habits from forming, and to help coach me with what each individual horse needs. My trainer is absolutely incredible and I’m so thankful for her!!

30:19 their chemistry is so funny cause you can clearly see how Jesse gets a kick out of teasing and annoying Matt. But Matt is too endeared to be really annoyed haha you both seem to really complete each other so well. Love how you bounce of each other so easily. It’s obvious how comfortable they are with each other and how in tune. It shows you’ve been living with each other for so long! It is really inspiring to watch you and your careers. All the best for 2024 ❤ sending lots of love ❤

Regarding the Helgestrand situation perhaps I didn’t make myself clear enough. The boss should always be held accountable, but question yourselves as to why the identity of the people witnessed and caught on footage was concealed? No names mentioned, faces pixelated… why? If we are to expose all abusers why are some being concealed? To me it’s clear that the documentary only intended on bringing down Helgstrand and its boss rather than holding EVERYONE accountable for their behaviour. It’s simply poor journalism.

I totally agree with you Matt. When filming a documentary, research needs to be done on both sides. Unfortunately, I didn't see that and all the equestrian world has been put in one basket. At the end, the important subject of proper balance between performance and horse well-being has been totally missed, resulting on getting headlines rather then getting answers. Bad apples exist everywhere and if they are uncovered, everyone should know about them to protect their horses and stables.

Things like this need to be brought out. Making it into a money grab isn't helping any horse that's caught in a situation like this. The grooms and other stable staff will not report as they will lose their jobs. I've witnessed some pretty appalling horse handling from a now-Olympian rider but was unable to report it as I would have been fired. I regret not having the courage to do it to this day. 😟 On a more positive note - i's obvious Jesse needs a Q&A cup, a big one, with a sippy lid so he won't lose his ginger again!

Actually has this Helgestrand documentary made that more people has spoken up about horseabuse in other stables here in Sweden. I agree with that the riders would get reported for animal abuse but Helgestrand is the owner and has the responsibilites for the horses. And he has threatened the staff and write a secretess document that they will not speak about what happens in the stables to others. And if you want to report this kind of abuse you need to film this to have anything to report. So I think this documentary was very good! And I hope this will be a warning to other bigger stables who abuse horses..

The thing is that abuse like this happens unfortunatelly more often than people think. I know at least a few top sport riders who do abuse like this. It is difficult to go against these big names when national federation is basicaly enabling the abuse (by pretending that this issue does not exist). I think first step would be to make draw reins illegal during competetions. No draw reins in the warming up or during decoration. A few months ago there was a "wellfare" conference with our national federation and it was disgusting to listen. What the person represenatiting our national federation told was something along the lines "everything is OK, sport horses are expensive so they are treated well."

You can also freeze ginger! I didn’t learn that until this past year. I love to keep it on hand at all times. My g’kids love Chinese congee for breakfast, gray rainy days, or if they have the sniffles so I need to have it available and it would often go moldy in my refrigerator vegetable bin. Now I cut it into pieces and freeze it. I can use pieces like for congee or tea, or grate it frozen when cooking. Who knew? 🤪

And that if they did not, DRF would try to find the riders. "Kraftig opfordring til de medvirkende ryttere De ryttere der medvirker i TV 2’s optagelser, er som bekendt slørede. DRF’s bestyrelse opfordrer derfor på det kraftigste de ryttere, som medvirker i optagelserne, til at indbringe sig selv for DRF’s disciplinærudvalg. I was so happy to see another Q&A, looking forward to more! I understand what you mean about Helgstrand and the media but he is the owner and 'the buck stops there'. The hard training methods were so wide spread it is impossible for him not to have been aware of what was happening. Andreas himself has been disqualifed for blood in the mouth during international competitions (once here in Stockholm). Fortunately the documentary was shown on our Swedish channel, and it prompted a lot of debate and scrutiny into unhealthy training methods. Thank you for bringing up this subject and hopefully things will change for the betterment of the horses.

As a long time follower, and I love your content, I am a bit surprised by your comments on the Helgstrand "drama". The documentary led to discussions and outrage in many countries, also in my native country of Norway. We should appreciate and support every attempt to disclose animal abuse. The focus should always be on the welfare of the horses. Andreas Helgstrand is not the victim here. I don't think it's poor journalism, and Helgstrand lost twice in the Danish court trying to stop the documentary. The court ruled that this was of public interest because of the animal abuse shown on tape. FEI and national federations have to step up their game and act.

I think you really need to watch the documentary again! The reporter/stable girl did tell her superiors several times about the abuse. About the draw reins, bleeding mouths and whipping. She even confronted Helgstrand himself! Also, there is not one bad apple in an otherwise good stable, everyone in that arena is abusing the horse they are riding. I agree their names should have been outed too, but seriously when every single rider rides like that you have an abusive system and their orders come from the top. Have you seen Helgstrand riding? Have you seen what he does to his horses in the warmup and even in front of the judges?? I have and his riding is just like what was shown in the documentary...
@luemun

I think the issue is that there's so many professional riders/stables who have some level of abuse. Or if not actual abuse, a neglect of horse welfare. They can't be too specific on things because I'm sure a lot of the people they work with come under some kind of umbrella here... I mean, I personally don't much like the way that their own horses are kept. (Not saying it's abuse, before anyone jumps me, but I don't agree with keeping horses in small individual paddocks for example). I think we as horse people need to be held more accountable, and do better over all, but more importantly I think the sport needs correcting. The rules need to be stricter when it comes to bad examples, and less restrictive when it comes to ways to ride. (Like why are people opposing the relaxing of double bridles in dressage, is it because you can't control your horse in a snaffle?)

I really appreciate the integrity you share and the positive role models you’ve become for a wide and diverse audience. I am interested in hearing more about if and when you will be showing your horses. Emporio did so well in his 2022 debut. And I love seeing Matt’s elegant riding style.

Watched this twice already amidst the new year celebrations! Happy new year Matt and Jesse ! Hope this will be the year you two find your dream property and continue to grow as amazing people! So excited to witness the journey. Onward and upward you go! 1. Thank you for the video Matt. Missed you so much 2. Jesse, now that the QnAs will be done every month, you can be equipped. I drink a lot of Ceylon tea ( the best!) myself and always take a hot flask of tea everywhere I go. You can do something like that too when you join the Jan'24 QnA! Also, I love how you are everywhere ! ADHD or not, everywhere is exactly where everyone should aspire to be, legit amazing how you embrace your unique nature and it just makes yourself so beautiful to witness as a person. I am so glad you are born this way and it helps you to explore all your creative sides! 3. Matt, as always, I admire how organized, systematic and straightforward you are. I think that is why you have achieved so much at such a young age. Appreciate your strength to speak up at an injustice. That level of confidence is pure magic. I love the way you articulate things and how you look at the world and life in general and OMFG you just listed ALL my favorite tv shows ! All of them ! And the way you deal with hate comments is just right ! As the saying goes " Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from" and also block 'em. Those asses are better kept out of sight! P.S: Now that Steve is there, more videos with him please. 4. Just love those chatty type videos. I learn alot from them and add so much to my life from them in ways that you don't even imagine. It is such a service and a great help. Please continue doing them and please continue slaying and being the amazing people that you are ! The only err is you both are so hot and it adds up to the global warming but keep glowing nevertheless ! Take care. Appreciate you both alot!

Lessons and finding a good trainer are so important. I started out at a lesson barn and then when we started getting our own horses we found another barn, the stable we boarded at had people who barrel raced and they went to lessons and clinics every week and we started getting into it and did the same. The barrel trainer they used was awesome and we took regular lessons and barrel racing clinics from her, and her husband no doubt saved the life of my Arabian who was completely ruined by the people who tried her out before we bought her, she spent over a year in training with him and it took him a long time to get through to her but he didn't give up on her and she turned into an amazing partner, with her, I took lessons from him and then his wife with my QH. To think all of it started by finding a riding lesson coupon in the paper one day and acting upon it. I miss having horses, I lost my Arabian years ago and though I would love another I can no longer afford board, nor would I want to board my horse again. I would love another Arabian again, I adore the breed, and I would also love a BLM mustang and a couple BLM burros cause they're so cute.

Your banter is always hilarious. Thank you for sharing your perspectives on different topics! They're such balanced and honestly very kind perspectives, yet still with a firm personal stance (matt talking about how he approaches people with more curiousity of "why do you do that" rather than immediate condemnation is a good reminder for myself too, personally. Please keep making more q&as! But only as long as the two of you are still enojoying it. ❤

You both crack me up love following you both. I’m an old horse 56 years but I’ve never ridden a horse. I just moved from Amsterdam to the country and I’m surrounded with horses, in summer walking with my dog i stop to watch those incredible animals. For some strange reason they always come and say hello to me, maybe one day. Happy new year to you both with good health. PS i lived in australia for 32 years but I’m Dutch. ❤
