Is Plant-Based Eco Resin worth it? And is it actually safer for you and the environment? I consult with my good friend, Brent, of Goobertown Hobbies to find out while I print up some beautiful models in the process. Let's talk about it as I review this plant-based resin sent to me by Anycubic (no money exchanged, of course).

I've been printing with this stuff for a few weeks now. I started with it first before trying the other stuff. Smell: Comparing to say Anycubic Black Resin. Once you've used it that when the smell becomes apparent. I have to say in comparison, I really stopped noticing it. It's like a concentrated plant stem smell vs an industrial chemical smell. Think more simple clean then bleach. IPA was far stronger then the orange plant resin I have. Printing: I've been using the Elegoo Mars. The default settings have been fine for me. Cure in a uv box for 30 minutes. Quality : It got all the detail of my models. When I finally got the black resin, the quality is identical. If you've ever ordered Fine Detail Plastic from Shapeways. It was all comparable. The flex is a nice little feature for me because I'm making then toys with thinner parts. That little flex was very desirable. Finish: I found that needed an alcohol wipe down because the surface is kinda spongy before the cure. I don't think you need a tank dump but I had to dry off the surface with it. I haven't done more testing so there may be another way. If it's tacky after the cure, wipe it down with alcohol. Okay now for some potential cons outside of price(which could go down as they increase production). I think that flexibility is double edges sword. I found supported failed less but there was a high chance of the print deforming more if the support failed. Or I have some prints that got deformations after multiple prints while the black resin was better. That was one print out of many though. Altering the exposure could fix that. That softness even after the baths has a little tack so you know lint likes to attach more. Though that surface also doesn't really scratch and leave a white mark. Once you paint these things though the surface isn't really an issue. Last thing. I keep seeing Non Toxic being thrown around so I'm glad this video is up. At no point does Anycubic ever make the claim it's non toxic. Biodegradable =/= non toxic. Plant based =/= non toxic.

Since your comment was one of the more recent ones and you've used this resin, i'll be asking you. Is it ok to just dump this thing in thrash, by that i mean paper towels that i used to clean/drain the stuff i work with or supports? Normally, i'd set them in the sun for a while and hope it's cured before throwing them away, with the resin being a safety hazard and all that.

i tend to use an old sonic toothbrush to clean my prints in the ipa. that way you can make sure they are clean. i find just dipping and swerling is not enough for prints i also use a syringe to suck ipa and flush onto the models. this acts like a mini power washer. handy to clean out resin from hollows. and yes all resins bio or non bio should always be treated with respect. good video. i love the plant based resin from anycubic. i was one the beta testers for the resin. i got good results and had my printer in the same room as me. and hardly notice the smell. i don't like the other resins that claim that you can clean with water as we all know people will end up washing them in the sink and would start to think well if i can wash in water i don't need gloves even if in the video of the resin they show someone wearing gloves. at the end of the day people are people and will skip stuff if they think they can. again thanks for a great video.

I found tacky resin prints to be from improper washing. you can actually get the tackiness off with a brush and some fresh ipa. I think it's from an IPA bath with too much resin in it. You can actually set your IPA bath outside and pull the cured resin out as it will basically cure solid and the IPA will be 'cleaner'. You could then filter it too.

Great video! Just ordered a saturn 3 ultra and the wash and cleaning station seperately but I'm curious if I have to use the rapid resin with it to get high speed print times or if it is just as with any resin. I'd like to use the plant based for smell purposes. Any help would be much appreciated

Any tried the clear Anycubic ECO resin yet? Best settings anyone? Logic tells me I should expose at shorter times due to the UV light shining deeper into the resin however 9 sec rather than the 6 sec default seems to reduce downward bending of the edges as it peels off. Still not perfect. There is a spreadsheet showing settings for most of the other resins but this one was not listed...yet.

You should not really make anyone sniff & huff resin vapors : D The resins require "adequate ventilation" (means that if you can smell it, it is not adequate?) or ABEK1 -level filters on half-mask etc. I just ordered one such half-mask from 3M. Thanks for the video!

For me standard resin is better than echo one because it is more rigid and requires less supports, furthermore the new eco crazy colors do not highlight the details that in the case of miniatures are very important, the eco resin has the tendency to be slower to cure. I can't find it so eco-friendly as on the package they recommend the use of gloves and mask and for cleaning alcohol...

Hi Danny, i was thinking about getting a resin printer, but it sounds like they are best to keep in in the garage. I live in Canada, would outside temperature be a big factor, its carzy cold here half the year. or would it be better to build a ventilation box and vent it out side?

@@3DPrintedTabletop The 1 Liter is more expensive on Amazon so I purchased it straight from their website. But yeah they need to bring the price down. If it was $30 then that would be sweet. I hope that as time progresses(and competition makes their own) that the prices start coming down. Also it would be nice to just have Grey/Black as bubblegum does not take pics well.

Hmm, I hoped you'd actually say a bit more on the safety aspect. For example if the ISO EN-71-3 claims are true and whether it's safe to print toys for small children (provided parts are big enough to not be swallowed) or kitchen accessories that get in touch with food.

Your sensitivity may vary but really crack a window open then after printing(which is when it actually smells). Though it also depends on the printer. Some keep the fumes all under the lid and others get exhausted. I would always have good ventilation working when resins.

Just one further note on the Biodegradable claim: it IS biodegradable (eco-friendly) _after_ curing. So the final solid part can be disposed of with biodegradable (or regular) trash, and that's what makes it eco-friendly - no more "plastic trash" that's polluting the planet. Still remains a question how long it takes to degrade, but at least this might be "good enough", just like for other biodegradable products. The uncured (liquid) agent is still toxic to marine life as mentioned, and should be handled with the same care. If you think your pet would eat/drink it, I wouldn't honestly. I would be careful about running it around them all the time (like in a smaller, closed room where they sleep, etc.) But if it was in a room where you cleaned the resin, no chance of eating/drinking it, I wouldn't be as worried. I feel that way about regular resin too, by the way. Hope that answers your question!
