It's time to plant GARLIC! Garlic is such a simple crop to grow. Very little care is needed.
When choosing your varieties, other than flavor profiles, the main differences between Hard neck and Soft neck are these:
Hard neck
- Cold Hardy, grows in northern climates
- Will produce a Garlic Scape
- fewer, but larger cloves
- will store for 3-5 months
Soft Neck
- grows well in warmer climates
- typically more cloves per head although smaller
- tends to store better than hard neck due to its tightly wrapped cloves
- stores up to 9 months
To plant:
Fertilize growing space with organic compost( I used home made and worm castings.) Garlic is a heavy feeder and will need enough nutrients to last from Fall to Mid Summer.
Separate cloves leaving their papery shell intact, this will protect them from rotting.
Plant garlic root base down and pointy side up about 2 inches deep but no deeper. Too deep will affect bulb development, too shallow and they will rot.
Back fill with soil and cover with a layer of leaf mulch if desired( you can pull this back in the spring. Especially helpful if you are trying to grow soft neck in a colder climate)
That’s it! You’ll be harvesting yummy garlic in the summer.
Varieties I grew:
Chesnok Red
Nootka Rose
Early Italian
