Jim, during the pandemic I discovered your channel which got me into plants and gardening. At the same time, i also found the Mr Maple brothers and got hooked with Japanese Maples right away. Both channels helped me endure this pandemic and I discovered a new passion. I have now more than 70 maple varieties. It’s so amazing to see y’all together. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Hello, I've had the same experience this winter in discovering Mr. Maple and Jim Putnam and also Plant Amnesty videos with Cass Turnbull about plant friendly pruning methods. I'm in Senior Housing so I can't have 70 varieties. But I've created a shade meditation rock garden here for residents with Japanese elements. I'm in Vermont, so in May I'll be planting a green lace leaf above my dry river. What's even nicer is I've been hired to do my first garden for someone else - a business and the owner has agreed to let me plant a lace leaf there too. Wise pruning will be necessary and Cass Turnbull's videos have already taught me some of that.

I purchased an 'Octopus ' Japanese maple from Mr. Maple. Although it arrived only about 6-8" tall last year, it has put on a ton of growth & can't wait for the vivid red fall color. I'm using this as a specimen plant in the center of a garden in front of a window. This maple grows about 6-8' tall & wide with a cascading habit, like Octopus tentacles. Just perfect for the location. I'm in Michigan, zone 6b. If you plant this in an open area, I would recommend protecting from winter winds. Mr. Maple & team are fantastic!

Jim, I love watching Mr. Maple's YT videos. I can't wait to see which (because it's impossible to only get one) of their unique trees and shrubs you end up bringing back to plant in your Raleigh, NC landscape. I've purchased several trees from them in the past, and in my zone 5a, I only lost one due to a sudden prolonged deep freeze, which occurred a week after I got my trees planted. I had to chuckle as I watched this video because of the way both you and Matt Nichols 'talk with your hands'! I'm looking forward to seeing part 2 of your Mr. Maple Nursery tour with Tim because he's a 'hand-talker too, but maybe not quite as much as you and Matt! Please don't take it the wrong way, I do the same thing, so it's kind of refreshing to know that I'm not the only one, lol! ~Margie

I'm Steve and I'm addicted to Japanese maples in zone 8B. I have 22 cultivars many purchased from Mr Maple and I'm running out of space to grow them do to limited shade trees in my yard. I have a few of the Shantung's out in full sun where they do well as well as the August Blaze (Acer x freemanii) in sun. As those mature they should provide shade for more the delicate varieties- yea!
