There really is no excuse for so much packaging, they could have reduced that by half but I expect that would be more expensive ! I have a suggestion, I remember growing up (not sure if they are still a thing) you could buy those semi-dodgy hampers, I think usually Christmas themed. My challenge is this: Buy a cheap'ish Hamper, it has to be big enough to have a variety of products, and see how long you can survive off it alone, making different meals from the ingredients (tea, coffee, water, milk, condiments allowed within reason, don't want to go crazy). When we got them as gifts, they always had the weirdest things.

A welcome surprise of a video! It's awesome seeing non-vegans review vegan products. Some plant-based meats taste spot-on to their animal-based counterparts and some taste off. However, many taste fantastic in their own right especially when the focus is on its standalone flavor versus how closely it resembles the animal product. The most lavish meals I've ever had were made by talented vegan chefs that put their focus on making a fantastic dish rather than only trying to copy meat, though products like this still can certainly play a role in them. I can't wait to watch more!

She has mentioned in the past that what she misses most from her non-vegetarian days are buffalo wings, so I picked up some seitan yesterday to try and make some buffalo wing replacements/alternatives as seitan is supposed to be the closest textually to meat. On the name "vacon" I'd rather see something like this over the current trend of "vegan leather", "vegan beef", "cauliflower steaks"; the contradictory nature of those names it grating. Although vacon isn't the best make, facon is already taken, it sounds like they put more into product development than they did workshopping the name, which I'm on board with. Some issues - wheat gluten comes from wheat sprayed with pesticides even tho it may be non-GMO. Same with wheat flour that's not organic, and can cause gut issues, leaky gut, and allergies. Vitamin fortification is usually synthetic. Rapeseed oil is canola oil and not natural. Palm oil is commonly from plantations that displace Orangutan habitats. 'Natural flavoring' and 'smoke flavoring' are chemicals. Yeast extract is another name for MSG. You can make your own veggie bacon from organic tempeh or coconut, mushroom, zucchini, eggplant, parsnips --- that's clean, satisfying, and tasty!

My dad would cook it in the morning when I was a kid and I never liked it, tried it at restaurants and never liked it, fast food places, never liked it. A lot of us vegans went vegan because we never really enjoyed the taste of meat to begin with. The only substitute "meat" I make is seitan roast and the occasional chickpea and seaweed "crab" cakes. Mainly because those recipes are very cheap and you can make a lot with one batch. Hell, the seitan "turkey" roast is only about $3 a loaf to make and is as good, if not better than the Tofurkey roasts and only takes an hour to make yet you can eat on one for 3-4 meals.

So it’s a wheat product mixed with vegetable oil and coconut milk and then added pea protein and minerals, then packaged in a lot of plastic

If anyone can get it I'd highly recommend the "bacon bits" by the brand "Vegetarian butcher" (Dutch brand I believe) I remember I tried it a few weeks into veganism and I could not tell the difference. The key with that one is that they're bits, so they get to compact the flavour in smaller pieces of product and not have the whole wobbly slice falling apart problem.

I'm still not sure why so many of these commercial bacon substitutes are so processed. Maybe they are difficult to harvest in large quantities or something but there are a few types of see weed that fry up to a pretty decent bacon substitute just with nothing more than a bit of salt.

I recently tasted a product named Vivera - vegan bacon bits. It was quite good. 8 people, only one of which was a vegan, but everyone liked it. Even me and I'm not easily won over by meat substitutes. It's 3€ (or a little under)/125g, so not cheap. But at least it's genuinely tasty.

So if you warmed Frazzles in the oven, and put them in a sandwich would it be more or less the same - but cheaper?

I would actually like to see a comparison with oven baked Frazzles in a sandwich

Love this series! I think even omnivores should call for systemic change, like China has pledged to reduce their meat consumption by 50% pretty soon, and I wish we would do the same, and stop subsidising meat and dairy, start taxing it based on the environmental damage it does, let it reflect the real cost. The plant versions are sufficient now to be systemically introduced. Hopefully give it 50 years and we'll have abolished slaughterhouses
@james00002 жыл бұрын
"start racing it based on the environmental damage it does, let it reflect the real cost." What do you mean by this? As in change the price somehow to reflect environmental damage? Sorry, not sure what racing means in this context. Also, would you be in favor of doing whatever this is for every single thing, or only meat? So you don't get me wrong, I have no idea what country you are in or what laws that country has and I don't have any grudges against plant-based products although I do prefer they not try to imitate/impersonate non-plant originals.
@berrylly2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Meat should be nowhere near this cheap. I'm not vegan but I only eat meat as a special treat, and as the vegan products get better I'll reduce even more.
@FurryTailor2 жыл бұрын
@@james0000 edited it, I meant taxing not racing 😅 I think it's fairer if alternative protein doesn't have to compete in the marketplace with unfairly subsidized traditional protein, especially with how harmful the traditional stuff is for the environment

I never knew onion was bad for dogs. I feel bad for all those years my dog Ralph got leftovers containing them as treats. Didn't seem to bother him. His mom was a cocker spaniel and dad was miniature doberman pinscher and Ralph towered over them 2 and a half times bigger than them. And healthy as a horse. What do onions do to a dog?
@aozasori2 жыл бұрын
Onions contain a compound that damages a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. As long as the amount of onion is small and the dog is healthy enough to replace the lost blood cells, they're probably not going to show symptoms.

'Fortified with Iron', and coloured with 'iron oxide', I'd have been tempted to take a magnet to it. I didn't realise they used rust in food but I suppose it's natural and could even be organic to an extent !

Heck, breakfast cereal is slightly magnetic. If you float corn flakes in a bowl of milk, you can attract them with a sufficiently strong magnet.

Could the 'Vacon' name be a legal thing? In the EU (or at least Germany) e.g. the Milk-Lobby got a law passed, which means that Oat/Rice/etc. "Milks" can only be called Oat-Drink etc. The official reasons is that it's supposed to prevent 'confusion' in the customer...
@AtomicShrimp2 жыл бұрын
It appears that legislation only applies to milk at present (which specificity also reveals its true nature - nothing about confusion - everything about pressure from dairy industry lobbying). There are other plant-based bacon substitutes on the market that do use terms like 'plant based bacon substitute', so I assume 'vacon' is a marketing gimmick here (or maybe they are expecting the rules to change and are playing safe already)
