This is fabulous, great job, but I'd like to see how you mounted it. Is there any media/substrate inside the pipe? The video thumbnail on youtube shows a P ridleyi mounted on a mash tube. Give us a good tutorial on how to do both mountings please (pipe and mash tube), how about that? Cheers!

Could be a few things but most likely old leave or not good airflow

I have got a few questions caring for Platycerium Ridleyi: 1) how to care for it if I am growing it indoors (fyi I live in UK)? 2) what's the best indoor tempreture for it? 3) does the substrate needs to be very loose and with good drainage? 3) on average who much sunlight does it needs? 4) if the leaves are yellowing, what does it means? Thank you :)
@TheRootCulturist4 ай бұрын
Hi, 1) For indoor growing you will need to supplement led lights Par30 E27 lights works well. If the plant can acclimate to your indoor condition they are quite hard actually. 2) 18-30°C is a good range 3) Sphagnum is ok. Let the plant dry out before watering. Good airflow is critical 4) Could just be old leaves. It hard to visualise without seeing a photo of it.

Your works are so amazing! May I ask your what is the best medium when growing staghorn ferns mounted in those cylinder-shaped pipe? I'm considering 'soil + bark'. What you say? Thank you for your wonderful videos! :)
@TheRootCulturist Жыл бұрын
Thank you. For those pvc pipes, they are kept empty without any medium. Those green” basket are filled with coco husk. Honestly, the best medium is something that you should be able to obtain easily. Otherwise it won’t be a sustainable hobby. Coconut shell derivatives like cocohusk, cocopeat are fairly easy to get in Singapore. With the goal in mind to use 1:1 free draining to water retaining and scaling up according to one’s climate. Soil is a pretty loose word, it could mean those with clay etc not really meant for epiphyte. So you have to bear in mind that most Staghorn ferns are epiphyte living on trees. Their medium of choice is mainly bark, old broken down leaves which peat moss replicates this well.

Love your video MyRidley have some of blackspots on the horn Do you know what's the case?
@TheRootCulturist3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, black spots are likely a sign that’s it’s been over watered or has fungus. Allow your plants to dry out before the next watering. A well ventilated area also reduces the chance of black spots.

I live somewhere where I have indoor plants get burnt to a crips if they get to close to a window... I wonder if the bathroom area would be humid enough for one of these...
@TheRootCulturist7 ай бұрын
That would be somewhere along the western hemisphere? Seems tough but yes if you could up the humidity and provide it a good strong led light that could be a solution for it to thrive.

How hard is it to grow indoors, assuming you have very good artificial lighting? Thank you so much for the channel.
@TheRootCulturist2 жыл бұрын
Glad you found it useful. We can’t comment on that yet as we’ve yet to try personally. However, we’ve heard of good success with growers using led. In 2023 onwards we plan to simulate using led lights. Might do a video then.

Do we need to give fertilizer on the ridleyi? If yes, what kind of fertilizer suitable for the plant? apply on the root or leave? Thanks
@TheRootCulturist4 жыл бұрын
Hi, we do fertilise the Ridleyi from time to time. If you’re applying on the media, you can consider slow release fertiliser. If it’s on the leaves seaweed extract or fish emulsion can be used.

Ridleyi is a sun loving plant. Having said that light intensity and photo period differs from country to country. We recommend gradually moving from a lower to higher intensity until you have the right spot for your plant.

Can platycerium Ridleyi Survive Malaysia Singapore Moonsoon season? Or should I move it to somewhere away from the rain? Im using sphagnum moss media. Thank you.
@TheRootCulturist Жыл бұрын
They can survive monsoon season. In their native environment they are grown in open canopy surviving the monsoon season. Having said that really depends on your media if you used a lot of sphagnum that causes it to be too water retaining each time you water (I.e drying takes >4-5 days would recommend moving it somewhere away from the rain but with decent sunlight.
