One of the things that I found that helped me the most with quarantine is to have a completely separate area and never go from the quarantine room to any of the plant rooms/tents. Always wash up/clean up and change your clothing after working in the quarantine area. It requires a bit more space, planning and time but this way you are assured that if there is a breach in your quarantine that it never makes it to your main collection. Yes, this sounds like a lot of work but some of us have rare, expensive or extremely hard to propagate plants and do not want to take the risk of losing them.

Thank you for another fantastic video! May I ask what type of "fly paper" or "mite paper" you were hanging in your grow boxes? I apologize for being too lazy and inept at hunting down the shot and zooming in a la Blade Runner style for the ID... Have you ever thought about reaching out to other avid hobbyists and doing a virtual tour of sorts in which you check out their collections and present it in a YT video? Kind of like Dav K does with herp pet stores? Just a thought as it would be interesting to see the variety of flora and the different means of husbandry. BTW - after watching your video I cleared out three shelves in my walk-in closet for grow bins. You're a bad man Mr. Schwartz!

I love this comment so much. Thank you for making my day 😇 The gnat traps in the video are BioCare Gnat Stix ( amzn.to/3ipK21r ) which I used in the past, but now I prefer ones such as Garsum Fly Stakes ( amzn.to/2X2jIT1 ) because they have plastic stakes instead of wood, and plastic backing to the sticky part instead of paper, so they last much longer. I have not considered a virtual tour of other hobbyists, nor any kind of collab, yet. Thanks for the idea. LOL about the closet thing! Sorry to be such a bad influence. I am impressed at your zeal. But on a serious note be sure to ventilate the closet thoroughly because there will be a lot of humidity in there which could lead to mold and other issues. Thanks again for watching my video and for your awesome comment. 🙏😎

Definitely going to implement these in my collection. I was also wondering if you have a more detailed video on your cleaning process? I didn't quarantine in the past and now have thrips that I can't get rid off, so perhaps your cleaning technique could aid in getting rid of it. Also what do you advise with larger plants? For instance a Monstera?
@AnotherWorldTerraria3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found this info useful and may end up using some of this for your plants. I do not currently have any detailed info about processing / quarantining. It's something I might do someday, but probably not soon. Basically you strip off all substrate and dead leaves, soak plant in water for a while, then add a soap like Palmolive Pure + Clear and agitate it, let it sit for a while, then use a brush to go over every square inch of the entire plant end to end, top to bottom, crevices, etc. Then thoroughly rinse till no more soap or smell remains, then soak in clean water a while. Also use tweezers and other methods to remove bugs (like scale, mealy bugs, etc) and anything that is suspicious looking. Cleaning will reduce but probably not eliminate the issue, but will be a big help to start fresh like that and then you should probably use some kind of safe/organic pesticide such as Safer brand insect killing soap, Bonide, etc. There are so many methods and approaches. Too much detail. I've already gone too long here. LOL. I cannot speak about large plants because I don't currently grow any big plants or houseplants of any kind. I have no experience there and cannot imagine a good way to quarantine a plant like that other than keeping them as far apart as physically possible. Good luck
@TitanChief103 жыл бұрын
@@AnotherWorldTerraria Thank you for the fast reply, I'll need too find some time too properly go through my plants. I've got some biological pest control crawling around but they only suppress the pests and don't really solve it. I guess the main problem will be keeping the cleaned plants from being infected again as they are currently throughout the entire house. Anyway thanks I hope it will help me manage the problem, definitely quarantining every plant after buying this one disastrous Calathea
@lastingfdreedom2 жыл бұрын
Hi, great video. What do you put in the water mixture used to wash the plants? Thanks
@AnotherWorldTerraria2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the plant but for robust species I use unscented clear dish soap. I don't use soap if the plant has substrate attached because it would soak it up and be hard to wash clean. Sensitive species just get soaked and rinsed in plain water.

Thanks for another great video. How do you feel about hydrogen peroxide solutions. Please keep these coming. Informative in the extreme.

Thank you. I haven't tried peroxide for anything thus far except maybe years ago for mold and it didn't do much for me, if I recall. Maybe I'll revisit the idea.

Hey man awesome vid! Im curious, besides hygrolon have you used products such as epiweb?
@AnotherWorldTerraria3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, I used epiweb occasionally. It's best for situations and plants that don't need to be too moist. It is very well draining and porous, so it dries out fast.

@@AnotherWorldTerraria yeah i figured that, im using the branch product to grow polytrichum for a pair of denbrobates cobalts and a wall of hygrolon on the side

Found your video recently, do you have any 'alternatives' for the propogation part for orchids? Is it just a case of buying multiple and/or splitting larger specimens?
@AnotherWorldTerraria2 жыл бұрын
For orchids, generally you will divide larger plants, take cuttings, remove offsets, etc. And yes, you can buy multiple as well (best for species which don't spread as much)

What is your suggestion on quarantining air plants? They seem very simple and easy for beginners? No roots or substrate to worry about.
@AnotherWorldTerraria3 жыл бұрын
I don't grow many so I am not super familiar with their common pests / diseases, but I'd assume you'd have to worry about things like scale, mealy bugs, and spider mites, at least. I would keep any new ones physically as far apart as possible.

What bothers me is; I was told and read that terrariums are low maintenance and easy for beginners. I bought all the equipment for one and now I have to wait almost a year in quarantine before i can plant.🤨 Seems not worth it. Who knows if i will even care a year from now with no results to see.? There has got to be a easier way to get started. Also, does moss really need to be quarantined for 9 months too if you buy from a reputable company?
@AnotherWorldTerraria4 ай бұрын
I understand your concern. Quarantine is a preference, it is NOT required. Each person has to decide on their comfort level for the risk involved. For most people making simple terrariums with common plants, skipping quarantine is probably fine. Quarantine is more for very rare plants and large collections where the spread of pests and disease could be catastropic. In other words, you get to decide if / how much quarantine you want, and how simple or complex the hobby is. I think you should just make your terrarium and go for it without a quarantine. The goal is to have fun! Again, with the moss, not necessary for you to quarantine.
@teleguy56994 ай бұрын
@@AnotherWorldTerraria Thank you so much for your reply. And I can understand what you mean about quarantine for rare plants and having such a huge garden and investment. It has relieved me to know that I can keep my journey going, knowing that there might be hiccups along the way, but as a newbie to this hobby, I can seek some instant rewards. When I was learning guitar, someone stated, "learn songs or you'll start getting bored". I equate that to building my first terrarium. Get one built or soon you will become bored. I've learned a lot from your blogs and videos. Thank you for you hard work and quick response.
