I completely agree with you on this one , grafting plants on to other plants is so weird, I think it makes them look uglier than they look natural. Plats are already look amazing and they are fascinating. The only time I justify these succulent grafts is when it is done as an experiment , because it is absolutely fascinating to see how resilient plants are, but not for aesthetic reasons. I am planning to experiment and grow one of my benjemina as a root over statue bonsai. Also, in bonsai, there is a technique where they do use wire to shape the trees and branches, the opposite technique to that would be Clip and Grow, where the wire is almost never used, they only use directional pruning every year or so. Both techniques are very old and popular, and they are both widely accepted and valid.
@SheffieldMadePlants Жыл бұрын
Cool thanks for that. We live and learn 😁

ofcourse. wires are used in most bonsai trees. however whatthat girl did with theavocado tree and wire was ridiculous. that has nothing to do with bonsai.
@ingrida1121 Жыл бұрын
@@Mrs.Karen_Walker what do you mean lol, this avocado is a tree that is planted in a container, and bonsai literary means 'planted in a container', and that person used the wire to manipulate the growth of the tree to make an interesting shape, few months later when the wire is removed, the tree will stay that shape on its own, so..... it is a bonsai, and it would be bonsai with or without the wire depending if the person wants it to be.

Hydrogen peroxide must be kept in an opaque bottle other wise you'll have nothing but water in a bottle. This is why it gets stored in a brown bottle. Kokedamas are the best! I think you would like them in your home too! Meanwhile ive created few of them using different plants and different techniques. Robust plants like spider plant or any type of succulent plant work the best. To water them, I fill a small bucket with water and leave them there for 10 minutes Then I pour out the water to drain the plants for 10 more minutes before putting them back to their place

The orchid mounting on a board is pretty popular. One of the prime benefits of mounting orchids is that they are able to grow in a more natural position - even to the extent of generally not needing to worry about moisture causing crown rot since water is able to drip off like it would during a rainstorm or heavy mist. A downside is that they tend to dry out faster than when potted. When they're mounted, they're not mounted pointing straight up, though.

This reminds me of the colored plant I bought a few years ago. Very vivid color like I'd never seen. Looked like a compact Kalanchoe. I took it to work to show my plant friends and we all looked at it for quite a while till suddenly a lightbulb went off in my head. IT HAD BEEN PAINTED! Yes, some dufuss brain had spray painted all those plants at Lowes. I tried to wash the paint off. Nope. Tried to gently scrape the paint off. ok, a few flakes came off but the poor plant didn't make it. The paint didn't allow the plant to breath, so it died. I have not seen any of those horrible things since. Too many people complained I imagine. These hacks you have are hysterical.

Actually the wire hack for shaping the plant into a bonsai is actually how bonsai artists coerce the trees into their shape. They loosely wrap wire to mold it and then wait for it to mature long enough to hold that shape. So technically it was a bonsai, but just one in its infancy.

This is the ultimate hack, I got my mom a plant that requires a ton of humidity (don’t remember the name, it was green with light pink stripes) and I knew if I told her that she’d just ignore me so I FaceTimed her and made her let me watch her put a jar over it 🤣🤣
@deltatango6793 Жыл бұрын
@@Henny.777 yes, I do this with so many plants! Especially humidity loving ones.. I open them for a little while almost daily.. I also cut the bottom off of my large plastic recycling bottles and I put them all in my garden outside (with the cap off) over the bulbs that grow in the spring time and it’s really helped speed up the process for a lot of outside garden plants that might get a little stunted from the randomly super cold nights.

Of course I have to put my 2 cents in. The orchid hack actually would work. Orchids like to attach to wood. To water, you just take the hanging off the wall, soak only the root part of the orchid (not the top part) in water for about 5 minutes, hang it back on the wall. You don't need the moss tho. You would have to soak it every day unfortunately. Personally, I'd just put the orchid in a pot with some pine bark and would not require daily watering. A wall hanging would be a lot of unnecessary work but if you have time, well, ok.

I used to work in the floral industry and the support grid is a common tool, it's usually done with floral tape rather than rubber bands though. It's actually quite useful as there are times you need three hands when creating a floral arrangement in a vase or urn. You need your items to stand up and the grid gives it stability. If I have to step back and look at it from a distance I have to let go of it, once you let go it can fall apart.

Since watching your channel I've started bottom watering almost all my plants and they are so happy for this. A hack I'm trying atm is capping my pots with sand to avoid fungus gnats. I already do this in my aquariums to keep a cleaner appearance so I know if doesn't hurt the plants (its called the walstad method). The only thing I'm questioning is... over time could the sand mix with the soil? It doesn't mix together in an aquarium, but with the water above and ideally you dont disturb the substrate, it stays intact. Have you tried capping your soil with sand? I can say without a doubt that there are no more little buggers flying around anymore. Just not sure about the longevity of this
@SheffieldMadePlants Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard good things about this. Having some sand mix into the soil doesn’t sound like too big an issue to me. Stick to bottom watering and you should be alright?

You know what, I actually dont mind that ziptie stake one at the beginning, ill probably use that but with tag slots or something less invasive like small stakes down the edges of the pot. I've had some plants chilli plants suffer in the rain and have their hold in the pot and soil ruined to where the flop from side to side, either from root damage or the soil being completely disturbed and sifted by water to where the top of my roots are visible at the base of the stem. that would look alot better than the stakes im using, its sorta like bonsai fixing or how trees are sometimes supported by three stakes and then tied in each direction but at the very base of the plant. its more constructive than calling watering someone elses plant a hack i guess. The grafting was a little cool too, if it can actually live like that and continue to grow, could be done way better though with different succulents and placement

One thing I think is crazy is grafting plants onto each other can actually be very beneficial! It actually does help significantly increase growth in the grafted plant because of being able to directly draw nutrients from the host plant. This is mainly used for fruit trees (can reduce the time to fruit by a couple years!) but I’ve also recently seen a vid where someone has a set of grafted succulents to increase the seed output for both conservation and cultivation purposes, which I think is really neat! This stuff is just madness though lol

I'm trying something with a few plants where I dance on the line of overwatering in the name of conistent moisture, since the plants we commonly mess with are only more tolerant to drying between waterings than they are to being overly wet, rather than that being the most optimum practice, that is to say, its easier to let the soil dry between watering rather than try and keep it perfectly moist cause youll probably overwater. So, what im doing is Ill water more often around when the top centimeter or so of soil is dry but ill "reverse bottom water" the pot by sitting it on a paper towel or something and let it wick out as much of the moisture as it can, more than would drip out on its own while keeping the soil entirely saturated to try and mimick the consistent moisture level of a forrest floor my aroids evolved to live in. Also gets it back on the shelf quicker. its a similar concept in my mind to feeding plants with fertiliser more often at a lower strength. This is probably a good way to go about transferring water cuttings and preventing rot since theyre used to more moisture but im curious what it will do for established plants, ideally it accomplishes what mulch tries to do or what leca already does and achieves a level of consistency in moisture matching my led lighting and temperature and plant will benefit from those consistent conditions, i feel like the consistency found in nature and the lack of that in controlled conditions is one of those thing holding people back from growing stuff like the alocasia robusta in borneo that have leaves bigger than entire people. We'll see I guess. I'm mostly doing it cause I'm bored and looking for a breakthrough

I'm curious about foliar feeding propagations, ive done it a few times to my adansonii albo and it hasnt responded badly, little bit of nutruents in the water too since it has roots, its chugging along with its new growth and secondary roots after about 24 days which seems alot faster than what i was expecting since all the people with more experience in fb ghroups were saying the new growth would take ages to appear, its now maybe 12mm. I haven't done a side by side but id be curious to see if it has a positive effect on propagating since ive read nutrients are absorbed quicker through foliar feeding, id be curious to see how just foliar feeding vs feeding a plant in the soil with liquid nutrients would compare aswell, two ideas for you haha.

If you're gonna feed the plant with hair, you might as well fill the pot with your nail clippings. Dead tissue that contains pretty much nothing valuable. But works as an insulator in the case of hair. The 5 minute hacks has the sense that it should be illegal in some way, just because it's putting out so much stuff that does nothing while pretending it does. I also don't think you understand. 5 minute hacks hates onions so they only buy onions for propagating medium, they won't consider eating them ever. Also imagine eating food grown in the toilet.

@@SheffieldMadePlants imagine taking all the effort ... just to plant two letuces who are already ripe to harvest and eat, if not a bit on the over-ripe side. ps: hair is not just dead tissue. it does nave nutrients nd is thus benifitial. however it will take a LOT of time to break down if used like in the vid. probably several centuries. use the beard trimmings from electric raisor and mix the hair in with the soil so it has maximal contact. it also contains dead skin cells, which is benifitial. hair contains a lot of magnesium, calcium, phosphor etc. hair also improves the structure of soil mixtures.
@Mrs.Karen_Walker Жыл бұрын
Yuppi. you are wrong. and rather silly to say that hair and nail clippings is just dead tissue that doesnt contain nothing valuable. hair is very high in magnesium, phosphor and calcium. They have been proven to be benifitial for plants. the issue is just that it takes a LONG time to break down. just a clump of hair on top of the soil can take decades if not centuries to break down. if you use for instance the trimmings from an electric raisor and mix it in it will break down quite quickly. more surfface area. moist etc.

Some of their hacks, as you show, are simply crazy! I actually tried sticking unrooted Aloe Vera pups in a banana once. Didn't work! Except for calling in Fruit flies! Which I hate as much as you hate fungus gnats! They're eating me up right now! Ah! Spring in the South (US Georgia!)! You are 100% correct about the pine cone & honey. My house used to be surrounded by pines. Many years later most are replaced by hardwoods, but those 1st few years I had TONS of baby pines! They look nothing like those in this hack! My guess is they could be baby Eastern Red Cedars (Juniperus virginiana) or Clubmoss (Lycopodium). However with my tiny phone screen & old eyes, I can't see the pic very well, so my guess may be completely off! I stand by them NOT being pine, though, unless it's a species I've never seen! Thanks for posting these videos to help Gullible Gus's like me!! The hydrogen peroxide spray for root growth. 😂🤣 I don't think those aren't the same cuttings! Even if they've cut them above the rot to start over, they aren't dividing at the same places! Golly-gee! They must think we're idiots! One more. The tampon. The ONLY time I can see even attempting this is if I'd WAAAY overwatered something! I did that once w/ an Epiphyllum but I didn't use a tampon (way past those days, thank God!) But I folded up some paper towels into a fan & "planted" it to the bottom of the pot so it would wick out the excess water. It worked! Saved my plant! Though, if I did that now, I'd put more than one at about equal distances around the pot. On a succulent, I "dropped it's drawers", to paraphrase you, & let it lie in the open for a day or two to air dry. That worked, too, but I was afraid the leaves or stem would get damaged before being repotted!

lol, the moss they "picked" from the tree didn't actually look like it was stuck on the tree at all, but just placed there for the video. XD

My fiddle benjimina lost all its leaves and my fella and i thought it was dead. I stuck it outside on the balcony and a monrh or so later i poured my leftover aloe juice which i drank 10ml every day into the pot just to get rid of it. Quite soon leaves sprouted. I don't know if this was the juice or just that it died back over the winter. It's lost half it's leaves this year and I've no leftover juice this year so I guess I will see. Xx

ite very easy. just put the soil in the pot. poke holes with a pencil. put plants in. give it a good tap and a good watering down and hey presto. bob's your uncle.

I liked the wire for holding the rooting plants. Yup. Never saw that putting 2 diff plants together. Hmmm??? I have two water meters coming like yours. That takes the guessing out of the whole thing. Oh my goodness. I wonder how many people follow the "odd" ones? I think it's sad that people do that.

I agree with you on most of these "hacks", they look great for that one frame/pics,but it'll be s mess the first time you water them, and/or a week later 🤦♂ Unrelated, but good news. I bought a good sized Ficus Elastica Ruby for just five pounds, about a week ago. It's doing well , and the cream, pink and red variagation is so pretty

Here in Denmark, we have a discount plant selling chain called 'Biliig Blomst' which translates to 'cheap flowers' in English It's like a plant IKEA... It's a great place to find very affordable plants, but some of the plants they sell aren't the most healthy looking. Lots of good deals if you know how to look for some of the danger signs tho

I didn't knew why you don't put water on the foliage on indoor plants, now I know, that's even more useful than not doing it but not knowing why. thank you for that little titbit.

I mean the succulent hanger on minute 5:00 looked interesting, a little succulent kokedama? Maybe that could work, but definitely not with the kind of soil they've been using there. Also I think that this wire will become a problem. However I'm sort of curious to try whether this can be made to work. 6:00 looks quite "legit" actually, except for the colorful wool, they really had to add their touch eh? 😂

My girls often come across these "hack" videos and every time they say "hey mom, you will like this! It's plant hacks." I die inside a bit. Lol. They've learned that asking me to watch is a good way to get mom complaining and all worked up about the status of our society these days. 😊

The straw could be useful if accidentally half crack a stem and need to provide some help with it heals. 🤔 I had an alocasia fall onto another alocasia recently, if I had some bubble tea straws I might actually be able test that.

I've used straws to help the stem of a hoya after a friend of mine bent/broke it trying to open the window. It works I guess to support he stem, so if that's what you need then it's a decent "hack".
