@@SheffieldMadePlants Well I live in Nova Scotia and my house is filled with hanging plants as I have five cats and I’ve made lots of high places for most plants to survive where the cats can’t get them. Macramé is one of my favourite hobbies and I make some pretty cool things. I have one room where the hot air blows in through the wall all day long to keep my house warm so I guess my question is, are there any plants that survive a very warm dry climate that you would recommend growing in there that hang or grow well Other than maybe a cactus? 😁 You don’t have heat pumps where you live?

I have an indoor plant fertilizer tip. If you use a liquid fertilizer take a piece of duct tape about the size of your hand and put it on the side or the bottom of the bottle. You can then write on it with a sharpie or really good pain and you can put the date that you fertilized your plant. The duct tape is strong and isn't going to come off if the bottle gets wet or if you need to rinse it or leave it outside. And usually the sharpie or the pen won't come off unless you've introduced rubbing alcohol or acetone to it.

Just an update for you Sheffield. A while ago I bought a stressed out Pink Dragon Alocasia and you had a vid with a homemade fertilizer of oats and tea. I made a little moderation and I'm using rainwater instead of tap water. I've been watering my Dragon with it and so far, it's doing well. I cut off the dying or crusty leaves, just leaving the healthiest leaf. It only has the one leaf, but it's still going good. Thank you for the recipe and I'll keep using it until it starts to grow new leaves 🥰👍

For FUNGUS GNATS I swear by neem meal (sometimes called neem cake). You put the powder/pellets in warm water for several hours to make a “tea.” Then you water with it. Repeat for the next 3-4 waterings. It works!! I have tried EVERYTHING. This is the only thing that did it. Smells a little funny but worth it. You can also mix the dry meal into the potting mix when repotting plants.

I have found that 1/4 inch of sterilized sand over the top of your plant soil will take care of the bugs. The young are too weak to make it through the sand. However, some do come through the holes at the bottom of the pot so the yellow sticky paper is a great tool.

OMG 😮 I just got my moisture meter and I have no idea how my little friends have survived this long without it 😳 being autistic my brain is wired differently so my senses are not experienced in the common (I’m trying to stop saying normal) way but I naively thought I could improve my sense of touch by using the finger method and oh, how wrong I was, which is obvious when I think about it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I thought my first plant that I tested was ok for moisture but it turns out, it was bone dry 😭 and not only is this great for testing moisture but already it’s taken all the stress out of watering which is good for me and I can hear my plants cheering 🙌🏽 and saying it’s good for them as well 😍 … I think this is my best plant purchase buy ever 👍🏽 it’s definitely taken my plant life to another level ✔️ I highly recommend and can’t wait until the next watering day and I haven’t finished this one yet 🤪 that’s the adhd brain, always ahead of the game, or so it thinks 😆 Plant moisture metre for the win 🥇

Thank you for your tips. They are a great help to make a list and check all points off. Just today I checked all plants for pests. As for fungus gnats, I water my plants with Nermatodes every other month. Especially plants that like to stay moist (like calatheas or caladiums) have problems with those pests. But yellow stickers combined with nermatodes work great for me. I also buy predatory mites every other month to keep off spider mites, just as a precaution. Better safe than sorry with those pests.

I started to notice that gnats are damaging my Ginger and pineapple plants. I've heard many great things about adding nematodes to the soil. They'll eat gnat larvae like crazy

Any advice for mealy bugs? How far away should i keep the affected plant from my other plants? Also, why does my perlite on the top of my soil turn an orange/brown color? I’m going to start bottom watering all plants so maybe that will some that issue.

Mealybugs dab with rubbing alcohol and then wash/wipe off. The colour is probably a reaction to the light

I have a fertilizer (happy happy house plants) that says you can use it every time you water. I haven't been doing it in the winter but is it safe to do in spring if they recommend it?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Жыл бұрын
Yes that'll be fine. It will be dilute enough to not hurt the plants and give nutrients at a nice steady pace

I used to have a really bad fungus gnat problem with the houseplants in my bedroom. It was so bad they were disturbing me in my sleep! The best thing I ever did was to thickly top dress the plants with vermiculite. I still top water but I do so right at the root crown so the rest of the surface stays dry. Yellow sticky traps are also great for catching those lingering adult flies. Problem. Solved.

Plant lights had my plants pushing out growth all winter, so I kept up with the fertilizer. Don’t know what you do if you used potting soil with fertilizer already in it though. I get mine from a grower and it has none, but all the big box stores sell fertilized soil here. I got my rubber trees because of you….love them..thanks!

For fertilised soil you'd just wait a month to start feeding. Rubber trees are great 👍

For fungus gnats I use Steinernema Feltiae nematodes. I mix em with my water and feed them to my plants. Make sure the soil stays moist for at least a week so they can eat all the fungus gnats larvae.
