Easy way to shred leaves is in a trash can and use a weed eater. You can add the rest of your bedding for easy mixing....glad I could help..

I am from Australia and instead of using hay I use sugar cane mulch. They come in a big bundle and is very cheap. The worms love it and I have to keep topping it up. It’s definitely their favourite over cardboard. If you Americans can get some sugar cane mulch you will be how surprised how much they go through it. It’s the baby worm’s favourite.

Half-rotted leaves are good in a bin too. Stir the coco coir into them to decrease matting. The worms love them.

I learned by accident that water will remove the tape. I left boxes outside and was going to cut the tape and labels off in the coming weekend. On Friday night it rained and on Saturday morning, I picked up a box and was carrying it to my shop and the tape fell off while i was carrying it. lol. The labels were wet and peeled right off. Now I leave them out for rain, or spray them with the water hose the night before. However if they dry out they stick again so have to be removed while wet.

I have a tub full of water I put all my cardboard in to soak. I like to put wet cardboard on top of the beds. They are easy to remove tape and labels after a good soak.

Another item that Ive used over the yrs are egg shells. Save all used eggs and when I get enough I dry them out in the micro, then grind them into a flour and put in worm bin and they use it help in their gut. Very beneficial.

could you talk about adding rabbit manure? part of my 'garden circle plan' is to use the rabbit manure/urine, and they drop lots of their alfalfa pellets, into not only the gardens but also the worm bins.

Thank you for this video, I have one of those stackable plastic worm bins. I know I don't add enough brown material, not that I don't have it, I just forget to balance the kitchen scraps with the bedding (so much to do in the garden these days!!!). I have done traditional compost bins and I am still learning how to do my worm bins. Even so they are very forgiving, I have lots of worms! I will balance it better next time, we want happy worms. Thanks again.

Do you keep adding kitchen scraps until it fills up? Or just the one little bucket and then harvest it all when it's all become castings? Do you bury the scraps much to avoid gnats?

When adding dried leaves to the mix, be sure not to use Oak leaves. They are much thicker than other leaves. They take a longer time to break down. When all the other bedding has been processed, you will still have a lot of the Oak leaves left when harvesting the castings.

Whats the best thing to do with eggshells? Thanks for ALL YOU DO!!! My boys think you should start a "Worm Poop Band!" God Bless!
@plantabundance
@plantabundance 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Worm Poop Band huh, sounds interesting : ) To be honest, I usually just throw my eggshells into the worm bin with the rest of the kitchen scraps or burry them in the yard. It's often recommended that you should rinse the shells and allow them to lay out in the sun for a few days to kill any possibility of E. coli, especially before using them in a bin. Either way, you can blend them up in a powerful blender into a shell powder that the worms will break down quickly. Left whole they do eventually break down, but it takes a very long time. I noticed my worms like to congregate in and around the shells. When I harvest castings any left over shells go out into the garden with the rest of the compost. Cheers!

@@plantabundance I read some where that egg shells help in the reproducing aspect of raising worms. I don't know if that's factual, but it can't hurt just to add them to the bed. I use old washing machine tubs for my worm bins. They work very well.

For biochar, could wood Ash be considered the same,? I like to have bonfires out back so I have plenty of wood ash. I saw another video somewhere where Woodash is OK to use, but not too much of it at a time in compost piles or worm bins.

I usually when adding cardboard shred it first,, but lately seeing that most of the cardboard is not getting processed so will either cut down or maybe eliminate.

Hello I am new to worm bins.... and have a few questions.... I was going to do a worm compsting system with 3 rubbermaid containers... it mentions the top 2 bins need holes drilled so moisture can drip to bottom bin, which is where the worm "tea" goes to.... do I need to use screen in middle bin to keep worms from going into bottom bin... any help is appreciated.. ty

Walmart sells a bunch of different colored 50-60 quart plastic totes for around $5-$7. I believe the brand is Sterilite. I poked holes in the bottom of one and then I stacked the bottoms half (ie no lids) together for drainage from the top one, into the bottom one with a really shallow plastic box/basket under it. Between the two totes, to keep the "worm tea" from soaking/staying in the top bin. Over 8 months and my worms have doubled and I have harvested a almost 6 lbs of worm castings in the last 3 months.

Is that all the soil I need for my worms. I used the whole bin like you have for my soil with worms and then started slowly adding food to the top of the bin, is this ok? And do I need a hole at the bottom of my bin or just as long as the top isn’t too covered? Thanks

I have one to shred personal stuff, and I use it all the time to shred Kraft paper from packing, newspapers people give me, and office paper. Works like a charm. For cardboard, I like leaving a couple boxes out in the rain. They are so easy to tear after getting soaked.

I have a daddy long leg spider in my bin, I suspect it’s eating my baby worms, should I remove it or could there any beneficial unsuspected benefits to it’s presence there?
@mpybals8002
@mpybals8002 Жыл бұрын
The daddy long leg is not eating your baby worms. If you are not get any babies it’s usually because conditions are not perfect. They need to be in the dark and the right amount of moisture for them to breed.

Not a fan of the coir. Cost and prep is a bit much for me LOL. I use compost and shredded cardboard and brown paper. Using a cross-cut shredder makes the shredded paper "fluffy" due to the crinkled shape of the paper. It is surprising how it keeps the bedding well aerated. I do add leaves, not much though.

Why did mine die? Or do they get inactive before they turn? Three days ago they were fine, now the worms are just still. Pupae changing, nettles very active. I’m just sick

Did you feed them food scraps? What is the environment like? The worms like the temperature to be between 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit. What did you use for bedding? Is it possible that any of the ingredients for the bedding (like grass clippings) could have been sprayed with chemicals to kill weeds. Just a few thoughts that might help figure out what happened.

Hi Dan. Thank you for this great information! I'm starting my first worm bin & have a couple questions. I've been collecting worms from the yard. Does it matter if they are different types? I have some red wiggly ones & some bigger, fishing type. Also, is there any vegetable or herb that I shouldn't feed the worms?
