This is great, I love that you're showing the longer term outcomes of the various cuts. My question is: is there any way to actually keep a tree's height under control, if topping them is undesirable?

watching this again to refresh my memory, this course was so good, it helped me identify trees that had to be removed, and to tidy up the ones worth keeping. The NZ natives I have tend to start as shrubs and turn into trees, so I know how to keep them as shrubs for a hedge or shape as trees as needed. There are 4 “arborists” in my town, and 3 of them just top the trees.

"There are 4 “arborists” in my town, and 3 of them just top the trees." I'm experiencing the same extreme disappointment in our small Wisconsin town, super frustrating how little tree cutters know, or care to know and communicate about trees & pruning & training practices. wtf eh?

Thank you for all this wonderful info. I need some advice on Camphor trees. We bought a foreclosed home with numerous mature camphor trees. They are (were) stunning. We can't afford an arborist or tree service and need to tackle this on our own. Any info is GREATLY appreciated. I don't want these gorgeous guys to die and I'm certain they have "issues". And it's difficult for me to figure this out being a camphor looks deciduous (and ours sheds leaves in abundance all year) but is from what I understand, an evergreen?? I admit I am very confused!

You say that any pruning that achieves the desire of the pruner is good pruning but that heading is bad, what if I want the tree to grow long straight logs but can't coppice because of animals in the area? Another name for the "water sprouts" is pollards, and pollarding was a process used throughout ancient Europe starting in the bronze age. So are the heading cuts still a bad cut even if it does achieve the look and function I want from a tree?

Okay, but what if you have 3 ugly trees that you were going to tear out anyway because they don't have ENOUGH branches (or any really) at low levels? The trees (3) all grow straight up, split into three or so more trunks which all continue to grow straight up with zero branches on them and get over 50 feet easily before they even begin to have leaves on them? I live on the low side of a hill, my neighbors house is completely above mine, and it (the house) blocks much of the sun in the afternoon. The trees are now getting sun in the mornings, due to two other large trees that have now been removed. One was a dangerous leaner with 2 trunks rubbing together allowing carpenter ants to find a home. The other collapsed under it's own weight and the power company removed it. Should I remove all three trees and plant evergreens or some privacy screen trees? Or continue to wait for lower branches to suddenly start growing? Or should I maybe lop off a single trunk (1/3rd of the tree) or more in hopes that it starts growing again only with some side branches this time? I've had neighbors who have cut down a tree trunk above the fence line only to have these waterspouts grow back in their place. And honestly, a thick full group of these waterspouts would be a really good privacy screen! I just WANT some low branches! How do I get them? Is there a way to notch a tree to make branches form?

It is pretty hard to give pruning advice remotely. Many factors are involved including what kind of plant your hedge is made of, what kind of lighting and water conditions are there. PlantAmnesty recommends consulting a professional in your area for specific concerns.

Cities- even in the wealthiest areas- all over southern California have their landscapers top trees along the street. I'm not much of an arborist but always thought it looked absolutely terrible and traumatizing to the tree.

I'm thinking the world is full of unqualified tree trimmers. I'm in Central California, we have/had a tree in the back yard, not sure what kind it is. I use past tense because it's now a bush. It used to be nice & tall with dark green leaves that gave great shade. We asked the landscaper to trim it, he HACKED IT DOWN to about 8 feet. This was about 2 years ago. It's now full of "water sprouts" and is very bushy. This morning I tried to prune it myself so that it would grow tall again. It looks ugly 😔 I don't know if it'll ever get to be a nice beautiful tree again.

I would say its a bit turning the topic upside down. I mean it is not a batd thing to shape your trees, the worse is if you do not do it every next time when it is needed to do. When you tidy up your hedges and trees frequently nothing from showed here will happen as growing three heads form one that you cut last year or doglegs or any conifer top hats. I mean come on. I was looking here for the correct pruning lesson not that what it looks like when you forget to take care of the trees.
