Love this channel. Coming from a country girl, I'm so sorry to tell you, those deer aren't going nowhere anytime soon. You have provided them with food- the garden, the big trees for shelter and now water with the pond. Wishing you luck!
@laraemitchell9064
@laraemitchell9064 11 ай бұрын
I was thinking that, too. I’m sure they are there precisely since you put in so many trees and the pond. “If you build it, they will come”. And they’ll probably tell their friends.
@TheGiddyGeranium
@TheGiddyGeranium 11 ай бұрын
Maybe not. Let’s hope they’re just crossing. I have deer that come through every night. They stop at some of the fruit trees, but bypass others. They don’t bother the vegetable gardens. I also have two ponds with waterfalls, and they have no interest in those either. They nibble on the arbs but don’t do significant damage. It depends on their trek, and what’s available along the way.

My first thought was Laura had created the ultimate deer haven …food from the gardens, shelter from the trees, water from the pond…yep, they’ll be around for a minute😊❤

If they are there for winter grazing. Its an idea to tempt them away from the garden. If you plant a peanut patch in the dirt lands they may be attracted away from the evergreens. :)

Maybe your dad will make another video sometime. We appreciate his perspective on gardening advice and life. Monica and mom are always engaging especially when touring garden center, antiquing shopping trips, and Q&A sessions. Also enjoyed the garden projects completed for Aaron's mom, sister, sister in law, friends, and community college. Three content cats along with cute Benjamin and Samantha amuse me.

Ok, I'm just the opposite! I have ADHD, and certain sounds bother me, but none so much as the crinkling of plastic bags like that. When I'm in the grocery store chips aisle and people pick up the bags and crinkle them, it makes me crazy and I have to leave the aisle! Isn't that strange? I figure it's just a certain kind of sensory overload. Of course, Laura is always opening those bags, so I have to just put up with it. ;-)
@brenna6958
@brenna6958 11 ай бұрын
@@coloraturaEliseYou may have misophonia. Certain sounds can put you in fight or flight mode and it's totally different for everyone! I have it and while I actually like the crinkling bag, I can't handle other things like wet mouth noises or repetitive tapping. Making you feel crazy like you need to escape it is an understatement lol. I am also neurodivergent with more sensory sensitivity so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Those deer will move in once they start munching. I had to spray repellant on our shrubs right up to snowfall, and now they come to the bird feeders every night. Oh and we also have to put up 6’ tall metal fencing around our cedar hedge to keep them out of that. Our area has developed so much that we and one neighbour are the only large pieces of land left, so the deer and turkeys live in our woods and forage in the gardens. Gardening in the country is a challenge for sure! Loved the centerpieces!

It’s just another way to organize some of the wonderful information you have to offer and would be a great resource and reference for people. I appreciate you taking the time to film the end result with candles or lights. I liked all indoor and outdoor designs today. The berries and branches brought the candle centerpiece alive and I think the same will happen with a cluster of lights at the bottom of the willow sticks outdoors. The deer situation will depend on the harshness of the winter and where the tastiest food sources are in your neighborhood. Deer will eat almost anything for survival in a frigid, long winter. We have deer move through our two acres, but honestly rabbits wreak the most havoc in our landscape.

Where the pot is much darker to begin with, you may want to wet the saucer and "whitewash" with a dark gray or black first. By wetting the saucer, the water disperses the paint without the surface looking painted. As always you provide so much inspiration!

So good emotional about what you are doing that all I want to add is a real record player in the hartley and a few classic christmas records for this time of year and then jazz records for the rest of the year. Then the hartley atmosphere is complete. I like the real thing too, like the real candles and a real record player would be fantastic. I am so glad you stated the reminder about watering needs of the cyclamen, rosemary and silver plant, as being indoor winter plants are very different requirements than outdoor summer plants. And that when you opened the soil bag that you tore it from the top. So many customers grab the bag from the pile on the pallet from the top edge and then it rips open and spills all over the place, the bags are designed to open from the seam as part of tradition for big feed bags. When moving bags of soil, grab them from the body to keep them intact. THANK YOU!!!!!

I needed this, I always make plant arrangements and fresh flower arrangements at Christmas for customers. This is little business I do out of my house. Well my wholesaler is charging $4 for the poinsettias hate charged $2 for last year. So I am making white arrangements for plants. So that means my pot and other things have to be more festive. And you just gave me some fabulous ideas to use candles. And my husband always teases me to use things already have. I have bins and bins of and decor I bought over the years. I actually have fake poinsettias in ceramic pots that I used to put out at a neighbor's house. But over the years they look a little sad. So I took the fake poinsettias out and put them in hanging baskets I'm in zone 10... So now I'm going to head to Michael's to get some spray paint for those ceramic pots to make them festive to put the white plants in with some candles!!!

You’re so creative Laura. And the purple kale by the Hartley is😍. Yes be diligent where deer are concerned, they are beautiful but quick to destroy. Bucks will strip young trees by rubbing in winter and the rest are so hungry it’s all up for grabs once they’ve found a source. Try sprinkling Milorganite at the front of your gate every few days. They smell human and might by pass that entrance. It has slowed them down on our acreage but nothing is 💯 % foolproof.

I admire the way you improvise and just get things done. The center pieces and the pots look lovely. As to the deer, I'll share a little advice that my neighbour gave me when we moved to our rural acreage here in Ontario, Canada: "Get a dog or two. The bigger and more territorial, the better." Deer are opportunistic feeders and they rarely leave anything remotely palatable untouched. They are also creatures of unwavering habit, returning again and again, year after year to nibble on the same tree, shrub, herbaceous plant, you name it! We battled them for years with smelly sprays, Irish Spring soap hanging from trees, targeted fencing, you name it. No luck. And, in addition to eating your garden to the ground, in the winter and spring months when the soil is soft, they can severely damage plants by stepping on them, breaking their crowns and driving them deep into the ground -- or just making a mess of your garden by creating holes everywhere with their hooves. You garden in such a large area, that it would be awfully time-consuming to monitor all our precious plants and fruit trees -- even with the help of the intrepid Paul and Bettany. So, maybe it's time for Russell, et al to have some doggie cousins to play with?

But one year I had a doe practically raise her two fawns in my yard. I would come home from work to find them resting in the shade of my big maple tree 🥺. Pretty amazing to see them grow up through the summer. They’re definitely destructive but they’re darn cute.

In regards to giving the saucer patina... using a baby wipe works really well to apply a small amount of paint. More like a "wash". Also, maybe adding a little black would work along with the white. (So I wrote that comment before I watched the whole video...) The arrangements turned out so beautiful. I love Irish moss so much!

Always love to watch your videos first thing in the morning with my coffee and all the other GA friends. Question; have you ever propagated Irish moss ? It's sooo easy , you will always have some on hand , no need to keep buying it !

The hawthorn berries were the perfect addition. I was muttering "a touch of red" as you were putting that centerpiece together. 😍

You could always try using the floral putty that you used to secure floral frogs to the bottom of a vase!

Very nice work Laura! And by the way, I STILL have chair envy over those gorgeous Bergeres you acquired long ago on your antique shopping trip with your mom!!

Love the projects today! Gets me in the mood to decorate. Faux lighted garlands in the the window boxes would add a little easy something and save the greens for the wreaths.

Also a country girl, and we love our deer! We have a well fenced in area where I plant things closer to the house that I don't want the deer to eat. But outside the fence on the rest of the property I plant deer friendly food for them so they stay in that area instead. Therefore we can still enjoy them every day and watch them grow staying safe and healthy!
