I completely agree! Up until I found this channel, I felt this huge sense of "commitment" to the plants in my garden, just because I had spent money for them. Many of them were not bringing me any happiness nor did they add anything to my garden anymore. In one of Laura's videos she said that it's ok to dig out / give away any plant that doesn't bring you happiness, so I dug away! Gave away so many hostas to friends and posted ads to give away the plants. This was one of the best things I learned from Laura.

Whenever I hear that something is deer resistant, I want to try it. It is rare day when deer are not in my yard in the morning. I keep my hosta close to the house back planted with herbs but this year the deer found them. In one night, they were all eaten. I replaced most of the hosta with brunnera which I also learned about from your channel. Thank you!

Butterflies and bees are going to love those areas! Beautiful choices……with the sedums and Buddleia Bush all you need is a water feature and you have the perfect makings of a butterfly garden. Who knew there were so many colors of Echinacea to chose from? I’m making a visit to my garden center today. Thanks so much for the inspiration! 👍

A few years ago, I planted 'Rainbow Marcella' (I think that's the name). It was supposed to be orange. Last year it bloomed the most glorious icy pink (I prefer cool colors) so I bought another one. That one IS orange, maybe it's in more sun. Unfortunately, I think I stepped on the first plant in early spring and killed it because it never came back. 😟

The echinacea is beautiful and will look so lovely out on the new property; the new property is my favorite place. Watching you is the first thing I do every morning and it's always so sad when you say, "See you in the next one" and I have to wait 24 hours to see more. On some days I just go back and find older episodes to watch especially ones on the new property and with Aaron flying the Drone. The green twisters get about 4 feet tall, just in case your tag didn’t say that. I saw you planted some towards the front. I’ve had that variety for 3 years now and mine aren’t in as much sun as yours and they easily get 4 feet tall

As a garden center owner I couldn’t agree more. If you want to have continuous color in your perennial beds one needs to see all the beautiful plants throughout the year. There have been some incredible breeding of echinacea the last 15 years.

First year I’ve grown some perennials from seed and I have you to thank for it. I transplanted into pots, which would have NEVER occur to me in the past. In a few weeks many will go from the pots to their permanent in-ground locations but now as established good sized plants. Thank you!

You've often said that you don't have a formal plan when planting. How do you keep it from looking like a hot mess once it's all done? Meaning, I've seen people plant at random and it looks terrible. Is there at least a "formula" you use when planting, because your beds always look gorgeous 😍

Today’s planting shows some of that: plant multiples of the same variety in a drift to move the eye along, plant shorter things at the front of a bed, getting taller as you move back, larger things like shrubs and trees to provide weight and structure, keep colors cohesive but add in contrast. I spent years of just plunking a single plant of something I liked into my garden before I stumbled upon the idea of planting several of the same thing.

Drifts. Large swaths of color are restful on the eyes. I think lots of different plants make the garden look cluttered. And I'm a "plant collector" or used to be.

I love having echinacea in my garden! I have heavy clay soil and very intense deer pressure. Apart from the (to be expected) “test nibbles” when fawns are starting to explore, they mostly leave them alone. Mine are looking a bit scraggly by this time of year, but they look great for most of the summer.

Last year, I deadheaded my echinacea to spread the seed in another area. Except I didn't do it right away. I just plopped the seed heads in an empty container and the next day almost all of them were gone. Squirrels.

I started the green twister from seed last year (had one bloom last year) and this year it is huge and beautiful. Gets taller than 30 inches for sure. Its probably the most asked about perennial in my garden. You are going to love it!

I love echinacea and these are gorgeous. I love the seed heads, too. The birds benefit so much from them. I love that you think of them for winter interest. I dead head mine until about this time of year here in Texas. They still have time to put on more blooms before the end of the season. Then I leave those for the birds. Tfs. Yeah I agree if you have the time you can definitely dead head several times to keep many more blooms coming through the months, then leave the last bunch of blooms on the plants for birds & winter interest. Plus the spent flowers that you are cutting off can be dried and used for medicinal tea for us humans if needed in the winter months. Something for everyone! :-)

Laura I see your energy hasn’t diminished with summer, mine certainly has! A small garden as I have in the Mediterranean where I live has gone through a heat wave and it has done a lot of damage. Discouraging in spite of the hard work. I have saved seeds from perennials and that’s what I will stick to mostly next year. 1. Absolutely! Aaron and I have been talking about shifting a bit away from things that require so much weekly maintenance. 2. Our list of native trees in high desert is fairly small, but we’ve been making an effort to not plant things that need any kind of insect/fungal treatment. 3. Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to water and we use whatever type of drip is appropriate for each area- sometimes drip tubing with emitter holes built in for heavily planted areas and single emitters for larger things. Overhead water/sprinklers are only used for grass. We improve our system every year! Thank you for the comment! All good things to think about! 👍

Those Abervitaes definitely put some growth and that is amazing because you put them in ground, like what, one month ago, during biggest warmth. Echinacea varieties are beautiful. They’re such wonderful plants and require so little maintenance. Love them. Sadly, a groundhog ate all of mine. Sedum would look great along the border. I’ve read that John Creech stonecrop is good ground cover to keep down weeds thinking of your puncture vine and bindweed). Things are really shaping up out there. Grass is coming in nicely. Arbs look like they’re thriving. So much progress in so little time. What a huge accomplishment.

Just planted two different varieties of Echinacea in my Mom's yard this fall...I took a job as a perennial/houseplant vendor this spring and as a horticulture student, it's taught me so much I never originally knew!! (Like apparently, some people don't like the double flowering varieties because they're not as attractive to butterflies/bees) I still love them, and planted one (Double Scoop Cotton Candy) along with a single flowered variety (PowWow White)

I have a small area that I need to plant, about 7’x20’ and I am trying to plan and be selective of what and where I plant things instead of my usual Willy nilly oh that’s pretty and buy and plunk it into the ground only to be the wrong place or plant. Laura you have definitely been a very positive influence on my garden knowledge and theory. Thank you so much. Thinking some echinacea will be on the list. I live in zone 11 so a bit of research will be done.

What a fun video to watch. Laura, I really look forward to watching your video first thing in the morning! I just planted some (well, only 2) eccinechia in my small garden. And look at that grass already greening up! At this rate, you'll have that new property done on no time! Aaron, your grass video also inspired me to plant some shade grass seed in my back yard, under a large red bud tree. The hard part will be keeping it watered because the hose back there leaks under my kitchen sink. LOL

Hey Laura & fam! Long time viewer, first time commenter :) love your channel so so much! Thank you for everything you do to inspire novice gardeners, like me! The science teacher in me couldn't resist popping by to clarify that the prefix echin- in echinacea does in fact relate to spikes or spines, but from my understanding, it refers to the spiky cone in the center of the flower. Fun fact - sea stars are in the phylum echinodermata because echin- = spiky & -derm = skin. Spiky skin! Love me some root words.

This is only loosely related to today's video: what do you do with all of your garden debris and clippings? I have never seen a big debris pile in your space...just curious!
