This is where I plant a 49ft (15m) bare-root hedge to screen off an ugly end of the garden, using a staggered hedge so you can't see the gap.

OK, I know this is going to be a stupid question, but if planting an alternate hedge is it always 1:1 or is it ever done 2:2 (3:3, etc)? I would be inclined to plant 2:2 myself so that there are alternating blocks.

Well, I guess if you plan on letting the hedge get very tall then planting in twos or threes would look better

Hi Rachel, Wow! That is going to look amazing next spring and summer. Great video. Thanks for sharing. I’m thinking about getting my sister a magnolia tree for her garden for her birthday next month but it may not be a good time to plant in zone 6 in December?

Thanks, Cheryl. Winter is not a good time for planting. Maybe she can overwinter the tree in a greenhouse and plant out in spring?

Very informative! I really like the idea to stagger the rows. Now for tea and a rest. It looks amazing. Are these regular beech trees that have been shaped to be a hedge? Thanks

Yes, I had a long rest and a lot of tea afterwards, thank you 😊The hedge is made from beech trees. All hedges are made from trees and are just trimmed to control size. This is why it is important that the hedge is weeded, watered and fed as you have so many trees in close proximity to each other, all competing for the same resources.
