Welcome to another installment from Urban Gardening with Gray. Today, we are out in the garden with ‪@GrayGray213‬ teaching my young gardener how to play strawberry plants in North Texas.
Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits to grow at home. They're easy to care for and can be grown in containers or in the ground, today we will be planting in a raised bed. But here are some key take aways for growing strawberries at home:
Step 1: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Strawberries need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily to produce fruit.
Step 2: Plant the strawberries in the spring or fall. Make sure to space them 12-18 inches apart and plant them at the same depth as they were in their original containers.
Step 3: Water the strawberries regularly, especially during dry spells, and avoid overwatering. Too much water can lead to root rot and fungal diseases.
Step 4: Weed the area around the strawberries regularly to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
Step 5: Mulch the area around the strawberries with straw or other organic material to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. This will also help regulate the temperature of the soil.
Step 6: Pinch off runners (long stems with small plants on the ends) to encourage the plant to focus its energy on producing fruit. This will also help control the spread of the plant.
(Or you can take those runners and propagate then into new plants)
Here are some tips on when to plant strawberry bare root plants in North Texas:
The ideal planting time is late fall to early winter, usually between mid-November to mid-December. This allows the plants to establish themselves before flowering and fruit production begins in the spring.
Avoid planting when the ground is frozen. Wait until the soil has thawed and can be worked.
Strawberries need chill hours to initiate flower bud development. North Texas usually gets enough winter chill from late November through February for most strawberry varieties.
Planting too late in winter runs the risk of a late spring freeze damaging the blooms. Aim to have the plants in ground 6-8 weeks before the average last spring frost date for your area.
In warmer parts of North Texas like Dallas and Tarrant counties, aim to plant in late November. In cooler northern areas, mid-December planting tends to work well.
Prepare the beds ahead of planting - amend the soil, build up rows or raised beds for drainage, remove weeds/debris.
Keep bare root plants moist and dormant if unable to plant right away. Store in a fridge or shaded cool area.
Water immediately after transplanting and provide protective mulch if planting in cold winter weather.
Following these fall to early winter planting guidelines will give strawberry plants the best start in North Texas conditions. Adjust timing as needed for your specific location.
(Remember strawberries like a slightly acidic soil, so the addition or coffee grounds can be an inexpensive way to to maintain proper soil ph)
Follow these simple steps to enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious strawberries. Thank you for watching, and don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more gardening tips and tricks.
