Chest002, that raised bed sounds large enough for three plants, barely. Two might be better. Healthy artichokes grow to a good six foot in diameter; if there is room in your garden for overhang, go for three.

I love that Japanese pruner. I have one of my own. But no. You don't need fully composted soil amendment. I can grow my vegetables out of half composted tree leaves. And if add to the surface, I can use freshly cut grass too. No need for composting. This way there will be more nitrogen available. Composting will reduce the amount of nitrogen available because of denitrifying bacteria.
@markrainford12199 жыл бұрын
I didn't know about woody bits in compost actually using nitrogen up. Worth bearing in mind. Thank you.
@elfmom529 жыл бұрын
mark rainford I murdered my garden a couple years ago by putting in a bunch of free mulch from the city. I found out after I did it about it robbing the nitrogen. Everything died BUT the artichokes. I just put in a bunch of mushroom compost and pray the soil is ok now. This is central TX. and am so delighted they grow here!
@JacquelineHinshaw7 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the carbon added from woody pieces binds up the nitrogen in the process of decomposition.

I was not sure if the pieces you chopped off from around the edge could be new plants? Or is it just suckers in Spring? I have three plants and not enough to rotate them. Was going to give some suckers to my son to plant in his garden.

I am plannning a 4 by 12 foot raised bed for artichoke. I will be growing from seed to start. I will start seeds last week in May and will not expect produce until next year. how many plants can I squeeze into the area given? How long will they thrive? Great video by the way. I did not know how to care for mature plant. I cant wait until 2012.

Im trying to groe artichokes in maine. Ibougt imperial star, which are suppose to produce the first year. I read that they will ned to be kept under 50 degrees for the first 2 weeks before planting in the garden, or after transplanting. What do you think? Do you suppose it is possible here in Maine to grow them successfully ??
