Hey, love your videos. I have a channel as well, I build some pull behind ATV implements. Was hoping to chat with you but i don't see an email on your channel page. Any way to get ahold of you?

U could eventually overcome those weeds with some regenerative techniques. People will be fighting for soil like that someday

I tried planting winter rye in this field and it didn’t come back that good in the spring to wet. The only thing that can hold back weeds is a pre emergent herbicide in super wet ground like this.

Maybe you should try balansa clover instead. If you would no till you could get away from destroying your soil. As long as you're tilling you will never get away from the weeds

Tilling is the problem. Every single time you till, you will bring up millions of those weed seeds. Every single time. You're better off leaving them in the ground and going to a true no-till approach. If you insist on discing or tilling, wait at least 2-3 weeks after you do that, then spray to kill all of the weeds you planted by tilling. After that, broadcast and cultipack the buckwheat to establish that crop. When roughly half of the buckwheat is flowering, broadcast a highly diverse fall mix into the buckwheat, then cultipack it down on top of the seed you broadcast. Don't disc in the buckwheat...all that does is create the problem you were trying to solve by planting buckwheat! Discing or tilling destroys your soil biota, compromises infiltration, promotes new weeds/grasses, and gradually lowers your organic matter levels. Stop discing or tilling and you'll get better results with a lot less time and money.

Well whenever I spray and seed I never get the best germ rates. Tilling to incorporate that seed under the ground buckwheat being a larger seed helps to get close to 100% germination. Next spring if I were to spray that spot in late April and then again in May I would still end up with a lot of weeds. People on here don’t understand the amount of weeds in wet ground/ swampy areas. Sure maybe for a dry ground plot that would work. But the only thing that stops weeds in my ground is a pre emergent herbicide. Every time it rains a good 1-2 in a new flush of weeds come up. I heard something somewhere where you would need to have excellent to almost perfect weed control on water hemp for 3 to 5 years to let all the seed in the ground germinate and kill it all and no till in the process to severely reduce your amount of weeds. Without buying a no till drill that’s not going to happen.

@@wisconsinwhitetail9744 - The recommended seeding rate for buckwheat is the same, whether drilled or broadcast...that's how well it typically germinates, either way. You can't till or disc your way out of a problem, when that IS the problem. You don't need a no-till drill to plant excellent plots. You need timely spraying, the right choice of seeds and seed mixes, and a commitment to leaving weed seeds down in the soil, instead of constantly bringing new ones to the surface.

Best is to till in the spring, let the weeds grow, then spray them just before you plant the buckwheat. Then never till again.
@wisconsinwhitetail9744
@wisconsinwhitetail9744 4 ай бұрын
You will need a solid rain of 1in and multiple cooler cloudy days to get the same germ rate as tilling and discing seed in. I’ll be sticking to discing seed in. Buckwheat is just a cover crop so if some weeds some in it’s fine. You will be terminating and spraying it in 2 months anyways. Usually the buckwheat will outcompete or keep pace with most all broadleaf weeds.

So if I understand your system, you seed, crush the buckwheat and then spray with chemical--or-seed, spray chemical and then crush?? Guess it probably doesn't matter...

How many pounds to the acre of buckwheat seed are you using? Just buying the seed from a local co-op? Price per 50 pound bag of seed??

Buckwheat is quite pricey. Yeah local co-op $45 a bag. I don’t really know my seeding rate but I would guess at least 50lb an acre

My buckwheat always gets browsed off by the deer. I have yet to get a good stand established. Deer in my area treat buckwheat like soy beans…

Yeah I noticed the deer eating some of the buckwheat in certain spots when it was around knee high. There’s a-lot of moisture in buckwheat. They were probably thirsty.

Great video. I had very similar results this year. It was my first year planting buckwheat and had one really nice thick plot with almost no weeds. Other buckwheat plots was about 50-50 of buckwheat and weeds mix. I did the same as you by hand broadcast seeding brassicas in one half of my plot and the other half I used a mix of peas and oats. Than I crushed down the buckwheat on top of the seed and sprayed glyphosate immediately afterwards. I am awaiting germination and hoping it works out ok. On my other buckwheat plots that had the heavy weeds I was. not sure what my best option was, so I decided to just brush hog the plot down short and I am in the process of tilling the ground. Figured this would serve as green manure so not a total loss despite weed mixture. After tilling I am going to plant brassicas in one half and peas and oats in the other half by broadcasting ontop of the freshly tilled ground and use a roller to roll over the seed in the soil to ensure good seed to soil contact. I figure there will be weed competition but was not sure what other options I had this late in the season. I enjoy your videos! Thanks for sharing.

When my buckwheat gets weedy and it’s 50% or more weeds that I don’t think will kill when spraying. I’ll lightly disc the plot to chop up those weeds and if certain sections of the plot look ok leave that area alone and only disc the weedy spots. Still spray over where you disced because about only half of the weeds will be tilled under the ground. That way you hit the weeds with discing and spray. Better chance of getting a kill.

I'm in central MN & planted Domain Big Sexy & Show Stopper in my Buckwheat. But we got a good rain today & if we get one tomorrow I will be leveling my Buckwheat Saturday. I missed out on rain last year & planted the same mix mid August. However I went 2 summers with almost no rain & never had Buckwheat like I had the previous years. It has kept my Pigweed & Lambsquarter #'s very low when I get to plant the Buckwheat. Not to mention the fertility of the soil.
