Holiday Avocado trees, scientifically known as Persea americana 'Holiday', are a Guatemalan A-type variety known for their large, pear-shaped fruit that typically weighs between 18-30 ounces. The fruit ripens from Labor Day to New Year's Day, which is why they are named "Holiday" avocados. These trees are semi-dwarf and have a distinctive weeping growth habit, making them suitable for backyard or container planting. They typically reach a height of 12-18 feet and are sensitive to frost below 30°F. Holiday Avocado trees are self-fertile but yield a larger crop when planted with another tree. The fruit is known for its excellent flavor and has a medium-thick green skin when ripe. Despite their appealing characteristics, Holiday Avocado trees may not bear much fruit in the early years and can be outproduced by other varieties like Pinkerton and Hass. They require well-draining soil and regular watering, with protection from extreme temperatures. Nice video. Glad you were able to find some propertythat might be helpful to you in the years to come. Very smart putting those trees along the edge there. Was wondering more along the lines of how you found the property. Did you use a real estate agent or did you use something like Zillow? Going to be looking for property around South Carolina and Georgia. Thank you from a Floridian growing in buckets

Dude if you like avocados you should get with the dude on the Sleepylizard channel. He grows a lot of different types of mango and avocado and is in FL so you could get grafts from trees that do well in that environment. That's what I would do if I had that much land there in FL anyway. Haul in a few truckloads of mulch/compost and do some plantings, but of course there's the issue of water, so then you get into the issue of probably installing a shallow well (good enough for ag, not drinking) and setting up an automatic system for watering. But that's just me because I love both avocado and mango and those are good trees for that area UNLESS you can get winter kill in that part of FL from the cold. He's probably in S. FL with that large grove he has.

I'm excited to watch the transformation! As a Native of 67years, I have One little suggestion about the property that was taught to me and at a very young age, and have witnessed for all my life and would like to pass it on. Because much of Florida was either Swamp, Watersheds, Bayou's and such, (Almost every foot of the Disney property is FILL) If it is ever possible to get to the property after a heavy rain, multiple daily deluges, and especially after any bad storms that will roll in, to see where there may be issues with water, and how the drainage works for that site. It may save you a lot of money, trees, and potentially hardship by putting the house and other dwellings in the wrong place. Also, talk to your neighbors about it as well. If they've been there a while, they will be able to provide pertinent info of "bad "areas. I hope you also plant at least one of our Florida Avocado Trees! They are Stunning and Fabulous! They are not only quite prolific, they also get HUGE!! The tree and the fruit!! We are in the Tampa Bay area, and it's not unusual for them to get bigger than a large man's hand. This series is going to be Fun!!! Thanks for taking us along. The Very Best to you and yours!!

I paid more for this property than I want to admit, but I did it because of the topography. It's 38 feet above sea level, and it drains into a creek in the rear that feeds a lake. It doesn't flood, even when my neighbors got 20 inches of rain from a serious rain event. The ground percolates due to the sand and is ideal for septic, it's a perfectly rectangular parcel, electric and fiber are already in place, etc. What's funny is, because I chose to buy west of I-95, my neighbors are paying less in homeowner's insurance than I'm paying in NC, even though their home is worth nearly double my little house in NC. I looked at every survey file, analyzed all the contours (I'm a design engineer for a living), etc. I put a lot of research into this, so I'm pretty confident this land was worth a premium. I have done tremendous research on Florida avocados. I buy the West Indian avocados all the time from grocery stores and enjoy them, so I'm familiar with Monroe, Simmonds, Catalina, Donnie and the other commercial varieties. I think I'm 2 days into a Hall or Donnie right now, I can't really tell. It's a 2 pounder. I have plans to add Oro Negro, Brogden and a couple other Guatemalan x WI crosses. I chose Holiday specifically for that reason. I watch a lot of Sleepy Lizard, so I'm more well-versed than most I guess.

Honestly, my favorite part about gardening is the building. I seriously cannot wait to start over, as weird as that sounds. What's great is having a few acres means I can start 4-5 new set-ups, which will keep me busy for the rest of my life, constantly starting anew. There's something refreshing about that, that you can have a 20 year old garden and a 1 year old garden right next to each other.

The level of acting I'm doing in these clips is honestly impressive. Because Dale gets motion sick, we had to give him medication and wait 90 mins for it to kick in, so I didn't get there til 10:15AM. Cutting a pathway with my weed whacker, carrying seven 50 lb bags of compost, all the tools, the plants, then digging the holes half killed me. I lost 7 lbs. It was so bad at the end I had to sit in the truck and drink water, because I couldn't tie up the trees because I lost motor control in my fingers. I was close to heatstroke. That's the behind-the-scenes. It was utterly horrible until 1PM, when it downpoured and dropped 20 degrees almost instantaneously. I have dealt with some serious heat and humidity where I live, but carrying compost and digging holes in those conditions, I don't know how people do it for a living. It was so bad, it was overwhelming my lens.

Things to consider if your discover nematodes are a problem for the fig trees, etc - applying crab shells that contain chitin to the soil during the planting of fig trees helps to ward off harmful nematodes. Planting sunn hemp, tumeric, ginger, and marigolds near fig trees as a guild helps to ward off harmful nematodes. Keeping the soil near fig trees moist with mulch helps to discourage the presence of harmful nematodes and keeps the feeder roots alive. Placing an underground barrier 36+ inches around the roots of fig trees blocks the travel of harmful nematodes.

I think I'll be pretty prepared after living in Wilmington for so long. I believe gardening May thru September will be about the same as what I deal with here, but October thru April will be *much* easier on me, since I won't have to deal with as many violent wind storms in the spring, and I'll cut my frost/freeze events from 30-40 a year to only 1-3. I remember last year when you gave a tour of this property in a video, I've been a fan for 3 years, and I'm so proud of you! I am going to miss the phrase "south-eastern coast of North Carolina" In each video when you move😅. Anyways, I'm excited to see new projects and your transformation journey! Good luck ❤🌱👍

Before you build... do a sonar survey to check how dwep to limestone and if you have sink hole potential.

I don't think there is a rock anywhere in that entire field 😅 It's basically sand.

Brilliant!! Great planning! I never thought to plan that far ahead with my garden. I’ve always wanted a yard with mature fruiting trees. This gives me a new perspective for making my long term plans. Can’t wait to see and learn from your experiment.

Whoop! I’ve been waiting to see you start working on your new digs - new zone, new plants - how exciting! Dale’s going to love it … he might even make a gator friend 😬.

It really is. I hope we can make it down while Dale is still young enough to run around and enjoy the space. Part of me feels bad to rip him away from his home that he loves so much, but I also think he'll love having more space.

Very nice!! I'm doing something similar. I've lived and farmed in tropical Puerto Rico for 40 years, but recently bought a farm in central Italy so am planting lots of temperate and subtropical fruit trees... hope to retire there in 4-5 years. Always enjoy your videos!!

I know it's not exactly the same, but we did swim with the manatee's in Crystal River 4 years ago, and followed that up by eating at Cody's. I'm guessing if you're near the area, you know about Cody's. What a gem.

Thanks! I ran all the numbers for years, and Florida made the most sense from a cost perspective given what I wanted to grow. If you're willing to live away from the coast, it gets pretty affordable.

the only problem with this plan is that one day you're going to have to live in Florida. Other than that it's a solid plan! I'll be looking forward to the 6-12 month updates!
