You finally got a seeder. That was one of the best investments I ever made. It takes a bit to get used to but you will get to the point when you don't know what you did without it.
@Squick994 жыл бұрын
What sort of plants do you use your seeder for? I've been slowly increasing my garden, and I'm up to 2500 square feet. So I'm not sure that's anywhere near large enough for a seeder. But man is it frustrating trying to space carrots and lettuces evenly!

Growing Popcorn...I haven't thought about that since I was a kid. My mom always liked to try new things, and I remember that now...probably about 1975ish. I don't remember eating it, but I'm sure we did. Thank for bringing back a memory!

Interesting video. I am always a bit sceptical about machines/tools. I trust your enthusiam. I pray that the popcorn seeds are planted at the right depth and the spacing is optimal. I’ll be very interested to follow the progress of your popcorn crop in subsequent videos and to hear your observations and evaluations. I hope you try out the seeder for small seeds, such as carrots, as you suggested. Two personal compliments: I really appreciate your low-key presentations and the background music does not obtrude. Sincerely, Larry C. Lewis, London, Ontario, Canada.

I’ve heard a lot of good reviews from that kind of seed planter, maybe not specifically that exact one, but that design has been used for decades with good success. I only have room for raised beds, but if I had a big garden plot I would definitely be using a seeder like that.

That seeder would definitely work much better with that little bit of extra soil prep. Dragging a bed frame, piece of fence, old gate, or even a pallet would go a long way towards allowing the seeder wheels to roll a little easier. A couple hours of hot sun on the field to dry out the top layer of soil would also be a huge help.

I have seen some different manufacturers garden seeder and most have a chain that drags behind the dropped seed and covers the seed with surrounding dirt and the rear wheel then compacts the dirt. Good luck with your popcorn.

tilling in the small pieces of non composted woody material can cause the nitrogen in your soil to become depleted. The bacteria that break the woody stuff down will use extra nitrogen to compost that wood. When the wood is composted the bacteria will eventually release the nitrogen back to the soil, but that can take 1 or 2 years. So keep an eye out for your nitrogen levels in the ground (yellowing of the leaves of whatever crop you grow are a good indicator of a shortage) and supplement the nitrogen if needed.

fill should be just under half. I keep mine tilted to the right a bit and it works better. great time saver, but hand planting is still more accurate. i love mine, exact same design, other brand name. depth on mine is fairly accurate. I would have also tilled like you did. if you plant white sweet corn an yellow popcorn, you can tell if they cross and just not plant the crosses. other colors work like that as well, but you want the sweet corn lighter in color

Most seed corn companies recommend planting it one inch deep and I have found that in my soil I have better germination planting it shallower than that. Three-fourths of an inch might have been about right, and the planter would have been easier to push. Also, with that big tiller on hand, why not go over it a couple of times?
@SSLFamilyDad4 жыл бұрын
I have been over that patch with the tiller 3 or 4 times already this year. Recommendation for planting popcorn I read is 1"- 2" so I went in the middle, probably ended up closer to 1"
@joeschueler85874 жыл бұрын
@@SSLFamilyDad Better shallower than deeper. You can always "throw dirt" to the corn after it's up. You'll get to know your soil, but I have found that the one-inch recommendation on the seed packet is usually on the deep side. After finding my soil develops a crust after a rain, I've been going with about a half-inch deep.

Hey SSLFamilyDad! Discovered your channel a few months ago thanks to Covid and I've been binge watching it ever since. My GF and I have always talked about ditching our 9-5's and starting up a farm. Watching your channel makes the dream seem like a reality. One of our concerns is making money - So my question to you would be how does your yearly in come break down. What percentage are you making off of youtube, goats and harvests like this. How much are you expecting to make off of this popcorn patch?
@SSLFamilyDad4 жыл бұрын
At this point we make money from a variety of things, goats, produce, seedlings, syrup, hay, pigs, etc. We are not at 100% sustainable financially from the farm, that is a hard goal but it is the goal we have. We are probably 25% there when it comes to farm income alone.
@alexnizzardo56394 жыл бұрын
@@SSLFamilyDad Thanks for your response. When do you think you'll reach that goal? How much of your time is being sucked up by youtube? My largest concern is income - We don't plan on living extremely lavish and luxurious lifestyles. We're approaching a crossroad in our lives. Our choices are work the 9-5 with the 30 year mortgage or spend a few more years living with her parents to save enough to put a massive down payment on a piece of land. Honestly we are leaning toward the ladder. It's a bit of a front loaded question, but what type of advice would give someone in our position?
