"Peonies, by their very nature, prefer a cold winter. So if you live in Minnesota you probably grow amazing Peonies, but not so much in Texas. Sorry, it’s just a fact of life. Look at it this way, you don’t see fields of Texas bluebonnets in St. Paul, Minneapolis, right? So, it’s a trade off, like so much of life. I will say, however, I’ve found that the early bloomers perform the best in my zone 8a garden. Old standbys like ‘Festiva Maxima,’ ‘Sarah Bernhardt,’ as well as ‘Coral Charm,’ ‘Coral Sunset ‘ and many other single bloom types."

This fall I ordered peonies from GHW. I live in Chaves County, NM. My fingers are crossed. I haven’t seen peonies around here. I’m going to order poppies now. They are beautiful. I love defying the critics. Lol. Thanks for the tutorial.

GHW has great peony roots. They are 5+ eyes vs the tiny ones from the Dutch. One of my favorite sites for roots. Also check out aldelman in Oregon.

The more peonies the better!!! And poppies! :) I placed a peony order from Gilbert H Wild in 2016. This spring was the first that all of them finally bloom. It takes a couple years from these bare roots. But I made a video on my channel of their blooms this year. I had made a video back in 2016 of what they looked like when i received the roots.

Here in the SC Upstate I’ve discovered I can prepare for spring. I can plant daffodils 🌼 and dutch irises in December and they will bloom in February or March of the same year. This has two benefits I can get bulbs on Clearance and squirrels are less likely to disturb them. Although daffodils are toxic to squirrels they seem to unearth them anyway if I plant them in the autumn on the hopes they are onions.🐿

I have 2 lovely peony plants, and of course, would love more. Being in zone 5b/6a Ontario means I could possibly try the odds at planting in March. Love these videos during our cold winter to keep us going!

My peonies were planted from Walmart tubers. They came up every year but never flowered. Year 4 I said I'd pull them and plant more dahlias. They must've heard me. They bloomed and have been blooming every year since. I love a big showy bloom so I'm planting lots more.

I am trying to defy the odds myself with the peonies. The weather has been up and down here in zone 8b but I have my peonies planted so we will see what we get next spring. I made sure to choose some early varieties since it gets hot and humid very quickly here. Sometimes I feel like spring is skipped over. Thanks for sharing

I have three huge double white peonies that we planted here in South central IL. 8 years ago and they do not disappoint. I am hoping to maybe divide them in the fall of 2020 and get three more started. I absolutely love them and the fragrance is divine. They usually bloom for me the end of April as they are on the South side of the house. I am going to send off for some poppies. I love those and think they will make a striking accent to our flower bed. We have honey bees and I know they will enjoy them along with our Russian sage. Bees absolutely LOVE oregano also. I have a big half barrel planter on my patio that I plant herbs in every spring and the bees flock to the oregano and thyme when they bloom. Gardening is such an adventure and I love trying ne things. You are giving me the incentive to burst forth with my gardening adventures. We have quite a sizable vegetable garden and I can everything I get my hands on. Love the heirloom plants. Their taste is second to none! Thank you for your inspiration! Always a joy to watch your videos. P.S. We are going to purchase some heirloom chickens and turkeys as well and hopefully add some geese in a year. See, told you that I am inspired. :)

I'm a first time gardener and I planted bulbs in my clay-heavy soil but I did put a bit of compost at the bottom of each hole. Had to plant tulips deep and haven't ammended that far down yet 😬 hope they come up! Also quality does matter, I bought root crowns from Wal-Mart and not a single one grew. Lol

Poppies and peonies have different growing requirements, so while they can be planted closely together in a garden, I would not necessarily plant them in the same pot. Hope you’re garden is flourishing. 🌱🎋🌷🌸🌞

Finally, last year i managed to dig out a Poppy plant from one property, 2 houses away. The owner had passed away and my neighbour went there to dig wallflowers and daylilies. Since i had these in my garden, i was only interested in the bright red poppy plant. So i set off at dusk, with a kid's spade and a bag on May 1st. last year. I have planted the poppy in my flowerbed and keeping my fingers crossed for blooms this year🌱🌱 Best gardening regards from Berlin, Germany.

Lynda Buchholz you want the soil fairly neutral. My soil is a little acidic. Just balancing out a little.

@@PAllenSmith I wondered if your soil was acidic. I know people who watch you and say they have to add lime and I can't convince them not to do that in this area. the soil is too alkaline already.
