Great video, It's good to see someone else preparing & planting potatoes the same way! I have potatoes bought but it will be a few more weeks before i plant. I have more luck with a red skin potato like a Red Pontiac, or even a Yukon Gold, Than we do planting the white potatoes in Tennessee. They all produce but we seem to get a better harvest staying away from the white varieties .I have thought about trying others ,but our garden spots are small so we try to stick with what works best. God Bless..

Same here the whites just haven't done good for us in the past.

Inspiring as expected. Just a suggestion. What I do when planting so many varieties is to seperate rows by variety. What I mean by that is this; German butterball and Bintge and Kennebeck are all white potatoes. I will plant a row of Russian Red. Next to it a row of German. Next to that a row of French Fingerlings. Next a row of Pontiac. Objective is to leave less error when digging out. Potatoes do look similar in some varieties. When you want to save some for Spring planting to propagate the same variety it's good to know that what you will plant is actually the potato you had in mind. Much love

How do you save potatoes? I have some in the cool garage left over from thanksgiving -can I plant those?
@DeepSouthHomestead4 жыл бұрын
They store best around 40 to 45 degrees in a dark place. You can plant them if they are sprouting.
@patprettyman37924 жыл бұрын
when you harvest potatoes, do they need to cure for awhile? Pat from Oregon.
@DeepSouthHomestead4 жыл бұрын
You can eat them when you first dig them, but for longer term storage, we let them dry for a couple of weeks before storing them. This toughens the outer skin and preserves the potato.

I watched Paul Gauchi(sp ) from the back to eden garden fame he doesn’t cut his potatoes and replants the largest potato from each plant. I’ve never cut my seed potatoes and they seem to do fine is cutting just to increase over all yield?
@DeepSouthHomestead4 жыл бұрын
Yes it increases yeild plus you get larger potatoes.

Between the Lord and ya'll, you are keeping my Spirits up waiting for the fields to thaw out up here in Maine. Taters, onions, and maters being my primary crop. The ground right now is a 2-foot thick solid block of ice, covered with snow. All I can do now is go out and lay down my fertilizer so that it can dissolve evenly and spread out like a blanket in the snow. Then when the last week in April shows up I'll take the bottom plow and turn over everything with the old Farmall super C, then disc it all. Then I get my other tractor with live PTO and run a 6 ft. tiller and row shaper to build my rows and then and only then I can drop seeds. Sometimes I have to wait because I'll still be tilling up chunks of ice and have to wait longer to get the soil temps. up to plant. Thanks for the Daily videos to keep me going. God Bless from an old Southern boy stuck in Maine.

You don't need ANY actual potato. I save my own seed, too. My first Spring planting is to pull off the long sprouts that grew all winter and plant just those. No potatoes at all. My sprouts will be anywhere from 2-3 inches up to those big 12-16 inch white viney ones. Just pull 'em off and plant 'em. They'll sprout a plant anywhere you see a node. Don't worry about the actual potatoes, those will get planted next month ... and they will have a brand new crop of sprouts on em. Pull those off too, and plant them. Then cut up your potatoes and plant those too. A bare sprout, no potato, makes a perfectly fine plant. I don't know why more folks don't do this. I've heard some folks say if you break the sprout off it won't grow back and the potato's dead. LOL. I've done experiments. Over a typical winter here, I can break 'em off and they'll grow back 7 times. Likely more, but it's time to plant by then so I've never had more than 7. When you bring out your seed potatoes in (March here), if you've got those long sprouts - you've just doubled your yield. Plant the sprouts, then plant the potatoes the way you normally do.
