So, what do ya say, we spend a little time in the garden? Yes! I love this video style. It is especially helpful to know the varieties you planted, the fertilizers, schedules for applying them, and watering (drip or not). Oh, AND fertilizer math! Back in your Hoss days, you did a segment that showed how to figure the corn fertilizer and scheduled. (“Hiney-high, we lay it by”) I made notes! It has been very helpful. Thank you for everything!

Kellogg’s Breakfast tomatoes. Grew them last year and loved them. They weren’t the most prolific but for size and taste they couldn’t be beat. Average weight was over a pound each. And the taste?… ohhhh… so good! Perfect sandwich, salad , with cottage cheese , or whatever grabs ya. Let those suckers grow to a gorgeous yellow. You’ll love ‘em! I like what you are doing. I also like the videos where y'all show how you preserve your harvests. I figure if I'm not going to grow all the same old stuff I can get in the store, why just do all the same old things with my harvest. I can get bored with the same stuff easily. I check YT for gardening info to make me a better gardener. But seeing experienced gardeners go through the routine can also be useful and help me see I'm doing the same thing and not screwing something up. Or see there's room to make something work. My Norland Red will probly come out next week now I know a good yield to shoot for. The sweet potatoes need hilling soon. My first time with them also. Better seeing someone else do it first. I try to return useful info when I can or just comment to help the channel. Nothing wrong with fried _red_ tomatoes from the store in winter either. Maybe there's a fat Roma.

Red chieftain is the bench mark for production. They have come out with a new red potato called red Maria. If red Chieftain is 100% on the productivity scale Red Maria is 112 % consistently in a ten year study. Also a farm in Maine was able to get a blight resistant red in from England call Sarpo Mira. Watching some English KZbin videos it is super productive. The allotment diary I believe was getting 15 pounds of potatoes for a ten gallon pot. Your channel is awesome. The prime in prime ark blackberries stands for primacane meaning that have a small early harvest and then a heavier late harvest. When you prune them you’re supposed to prune second year canes after they die so you get the full harvest. Most commercial operations use floricane varieties which fruit on new canes once and die afterward. I have the Prime Ark 45 variety but it has wicked thorns.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely need to do some more research on the primacane vs. floricane thing. We've just been pruning to keep them bushy so we don't have to trellis them.

Dang - I’m used to our wild blackberries up here that just get enormous - patches at the end of our city street are probably 8 feet high and 50 feet wide… but they all have thorns. You can cut those back to nothing every year - mow them down to nothing and they come back stronger than ever. Those bushes are shockingly small but I guess that’s a good thing when it’s a cultivated variety… and maybe your lack of rain? We’re on the rainy wet coast here.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 3 жыл бұрын
The wild ones around here produce small berries, although they are sweeter than the thornless ones. As far as my patch, I heavily prune it throughout the year so that I don't have to trellis it. This variety seems to perform well with heavy pruning and creating a more bush habit.

@@LazyDogFarm we have 2 distinct varieties of wild ones here - one has smaller berries and more delicate looking leaves and the other (more dominant) has broad leaves and big sweet berries (the ones in full sun are sweeter). The domestic ones taste bland in comparison. Picking those wild ones is inconvenient and injuries from thorns abound, but it’s worth the taste! It’s interesting the differences that location can make - I always thought blackberries were as hardy everywhere but I guess some locations more than others. We get a lot of water in the spring that makes the plants huge and produce a lot of berries and then just enough sunny days in July to make them sweet.

I LOVE THIS STYLE VIDEO TRAVIS!!!!! It's more natural...day 2 day....something the average gardener can relate to. We are all everyday people living an gardening. Not everything is perfect, an there will be times we run trials an they might not work out or they may. Gardening is a petri dish is how I look at it. Trial...error... Try again or something different. Dont be afraid to experiment to see what works for your climate, soil, TIME! Gardening is an experiment, have fun. You keep keeping the real, real an I'll continue to watch. I garden in 6b ohio. I know that my trials will be different than yours, an that's oki. I'm happy or will try another time with whatever. I seriously adore this Lazy Dog channel!!!!! (I look at hoss tools less, ssshhuuuu dont tell dad, lol)

You got me sold on those viking potatoes and the Kelloggs breakfast tomatoes (definitely on my list for next year) I want to try the Thornless blackberries, but I'm so spoiled to the size and taste of my thorned ones. They are about the size of a half dollar. I've loved all the new videos, yall have done great with the new channel format. I still go back to watch some of your older videos. Oh I will be trying that blackberry cobbler here in a little while Mrs Brooklyn. I had to get some ice cream before I made it 😋. You probably needed 3 buckets for the tomatoes 🍅😅.

Enjoyed the vlog style! It was nice walking through doing a couple different things in the garden as well. I find that most days unless there’s something particular I need to address in the garden. Then I’m kinda checking on all parts of the garden, staking, harvesting, and doing several different tasks all at once. I truly enjoy all your videos and always learn something new. But this reigns more true to an everyday in the garden style kinda checking on all the crops that need attention on any given day . Because even though my garden is small ( not even a 5th of your size). There’s always a varied something to do in the garden 🌱

Thanks for another great video Travis. We are back and forth between Viking and Red Norland. We like the Vikings cleaner skin, shallow eyes and firm white flesh. However, I find they have a slight sweet taste. The Red Norland are not quite as firm have a little deeper eye and a more blemished looking skin. However I do prefer their taste to the Viking. We also grow Yukon Gold and fingerlings just for variety. We have given up on the Russet as they just don't keep as well. We have a 3 family shared garden and grow around 1000 lbs. a year that we keep in a root cellar. Our potatoes will last until the new crop is ready around mid July up here in zone 3.

When storing them in the root cellar, what are you storing them in? (ie boxes with sand or wood shaving...etc) I will keep my in the garage but the challenge is keeping them between harvest and mid Sept when the temps drop into the 40's and 50s (4 to 10 c) Outside Chicago area, zone 5
@birchwoodbuilders3288
@birchwoodbuilders3288 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevefromthegarden1135 We store them in totes and I cover them with a layer of 1/2 inch foil insulation. We don't use sand or shavings just loose filled in the totes. Our root cellar is 6 feet below ground level with another 6 foot mound on top. Our temperatures here in Alberta will drop to -40 (C or F). Our root cellar consists of three chambers. We store in the third chamber. We also store carrots and beets. The beets are starting to soften up now, we won't have them too much longer. Carrots and spuds will be good right into July.

I enjoy the variety of styles... can go with any of them. Honestly I'm too tired to have an opinion. :) Just finished processing 56 more ears of corn... so far we are around 300 and unfortunately I don't think we are 1/2 way... I'm thinking after tomorrow (we will have 50 pints in the freezer) I'm gonna just pull the rest of it, and throw it in the back of the truck and visit a few neighbors.

What is your recommendation on storage for long term? onion sacks, boxes, milk crates, etc. Is it better to have something with holes for air to circulate?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
We just put them underneath our pole barn on a hardware cloth rack. Covering them with a cheap black plastic tablecloth helps to keep them from getting any sun and getting any moisture on misty days. Air circulation is very important. Keep them dry and cool.

The problem with multi topic video vs specific topic videos is historic re-referencing. Specific topics are listed as the topic and easier for search engine locating. BUT... I like the "multi" topic approach as it is more informational in a general sense than a hard nose specific expose'. Today I learned about breakfast tomatoes, Viking potatoes, Arkansas blackberries but I also learned you need a tool belt with some scissors to harvest your tomatoes. (lol).
