I seeded a flower bed with snapdragons once and they filled it the entire season. The colors crossed and I ended up with rainbow blooms that same year. The plants behind those were columbine and they also mixed color and that was the flower bed that started my addiction to the garden!!

I moved south from zone 6 to zone 8 (North Texas). I didn’t think I’d have much luck with snapdragons but now I’m excited to give them a try! 👍

In Greece we call snapdragons "skylakia" which means little dogs! We don't plant them in our gardens, they grow everywhere here as a weed. I love them very much and I remember as kids we opened the blooms and barked... hahaha Much love to all of you!

Un Latvia we have them in gardens brite and beautifl and also in nature (small yellow versions). We call them lauvmutītes, it means Lions mouth. We as kids,opened them and made Lion sounds

I like to take an index card, fold it in half and then open it partially to make a “v” shape. Then I pour my tiny seeds into it. Then I take a lid from a ball point pen and use it to slightly scoot the seeds off the card into the cells. It works awesome! Sometimes I use the pen lid to just slightly tap the card making vibrations that wiggle the seeds off one or two at a time. Also works great! Then I just pour the remaining seeds back into the packet.

Always perfect timing! I’ve started quite a few seeds in trays, but boy it’s so much different here. I have found that in the south, cinnamon is a must for our seed starting. We are just so darn humid, even at this time of year, that if I don’t sprinkle cinnamon on top I will definitely have mold within days. Can’t wait to see my little plants out in the yard!! 🌻🌼🌸🌺🌷

I am Also using cinnamon this year. 1st time. I did research, My main reason is for fungus knats (eastern PA). I was so nervous it would harm little seedlings, but found out Cinnamon is also good for root growth. My seedlings are doing great. I was going to mention cinnamon in her recent knat issue video. @@lindameeks9711 yes ma’am! It really does help, and doesn’t hurt the seedlings at all. Stops fungus gnats, stops mold from growing, and suppresses the biotone smell. I never start seeds without it. Happy growing to you too! 🙂

Great video thank you 😊. I have loved traditional snapdragons since I was a child trying to make them "snap". The little black beetles are known as pollen beetles in the UK, I get them on sweet peas a lot. There's nothing to treat them, but they don't harm plants or flowers. If shaking them off doesn't get rid of enough you can leave the cut flowers in water in a darker room near to a bright open window. The beetles are attracted to light so should leave the flowers. Your cut flower shed will be perfect for this 😊💐

Maybe I just have incredible luck, but I don’t have a heating mat either and everything I indoor-sow is always a success 😂👌🏻 Even seeds that are known to have “erratic germination”, or need a constant exact temperature or humidity - they pop up just fine on my windowsill (…in Scotland, so it’s hardly a hot tropical climate 😝). I’m sure they’ll do really well for you! 🥰

The Squarefoot Garden guy (?) Recommends planting seeds in a paper cup( not waxed) of vermiculite. I've been using the vermiculite only on the top, but I'm going to see how a whole cup full works. Good luck!⚘🌺🌼

Getting ready to plant my snapdragon seeds this week ☺️ I have a bunch of seedling heat mats, but only 1 thermostat...I plug a powerstrip into the thermostat and then plug the heat mats into the powerstrip. It works great if you have multiple trays of seeds that all want to be around the same temperature.

Confession regarding Johnny's Seed... I too ❤️ all the info on the packets. I feel like they're putting their $ into producing amazing seeds instead of unnecessary high resolution marketing. But I'm not as familiar with flower varieties, so when my order comes in, I get my old catalogs and cut out the picture and paste it on the packet in a blank spot/over brand name. Not only a visual, but a fun (for me) winter, indoor activity that gets me really excited for spring! My husband thinks I'm a total garden nerd for this-he's not wrong and I'm not mad about it at all! Lol 😆

Heat mats have helped me so much! Seeds germinate quicker, which allows me to start more of other varieties of seeds that need to be grown early. Now I just need more grow lights and a greenhouse lol 😆 . It is so addictive 😊

I love snapdragons! Mine will reseed and come back again and again. Espoma link and site is AMAZING. They have a feature “where to buy”. I now know we have 1 location about 25 miles from me. Looks like they carry a lot of their products. I wish all sites had this option!!! Great job Espoma. I can get the potting soil and vermiculite now. Can’t wait to see those flowers!

Living in a dry, warm, climate with deer snap dragons are my favorite go to flowers. I confess I generally rely on just the natural reseeding of mine, but maybe I'll give some thought to more planning and start some inside. Thank you for the inspiration. Last year was my first year growing cut flowers from seed and my snapdragons did by far the best. I had no idea what I was doing and there were WAY too many in each cell, but they did so good and will be getting a lot more space this year!

My tip, I plug a surge protector into the temperature gauge of the heat mats. This allows me to plug several heat mats to one gauge. Thank you for all you do! I’m a zone below GA in 5b so I love that your zone 6 schedule gives me great lead time on planting projects. 🌸Happy gardening!

I started snapdragons last year for the first time(WS in milk jugs) and they were gorgeous!! They flowered until November(zone 3) which this year was a long fall but still flowering when we had a bit of snow after that. Incredible how these flowers just keep blooming and are so gorgeous. Already started some in my winter sowing jugs, and made sure to seed LOTS. Thank you for sharing today, I had no idea there was different groupings. Great info.

I purchased a seed warming mat last year and it is amazing how quickly and efficiently my seeds germinate! I do use the Hortonova grid on most of my cut flowers as I live on a hill that can get some crazy winds that can flatten my plants! It worked so well last year that I will continue to use it on all my tall cut flowers this year! I decided to add a few of your different bloom snapdragons this year! I used a mix of traditional last year but love the look of the Azalea style! Thank you for the inspiration! Enjoying starting new seeds, tubers, and bulbs each year that just expands the beauty of our gardens! ❤️

I put vermiculite on the top two years back and I ended up with a lot of moss. Last year I just mixed it in with my starting soil and it made all the difference.

I'm.in the UK and have used vermiculite on top for a while and fine vermiculite added to the potting mix for aeration and moisture retention. I've just started wetting my compost before putting it in the potting trays as you've shown, which normally here, we only water after seed sowing or sprinkle water on top just before. Absolutely brilliant, what a game changer....thank you, I will be wetting my compost first in future. Thank you

I grew snapdragons from seed for the first time last year. They were the darlings of the garden and bloomed all year. Few people in our area try them as they are thought to be too hard to grow in our summer heat. Not true. I hope to cut them back come spring as well as planting more seeds indoor. I have not tried a toothpick but I do use a slightly moistened white cotton swab for those tiny seeds. Just did that yesterday for pink dandelion seeds. Works perfect to pick them up with a bonus of being able to see the seeds laying on the white cotton tip.

Two Springs ago I dug up a dwindling fall-planted snapdragon from my backyard to transplant into a sunnier spot out front (longer time in light, including afternoons). I didn't know there were 4 types of snapdragons! (Thank you for explaining this! ) Now I understand why it's so happy in Spring and Fall! The darling plant has found it's ideal location, and is gearing up for a THIRD Spring of pretty pink flowers all over. Thing is, I couldn't figure out what re-seeded itself in the same area, because there are about 20 seedlings all around. I suspect more pink snapdragons this year, so I'm headed outside to check if any need their tops snipped yet! Thank you Laura!

Thanks for a great video Laura. Here in England I only have a cold greenhouse but do have two propagators but I still won’t be starting my seeds until the middle of March. I never realised there were different groups. Mainly in the UK we look for rust resistant! You have so many varieties to choose from in the US no matter what seeds you are sowing but it never puts me off watching your enthusiasm and love of gardening and I always learn something from you.

I'm in Snapdragon heaven! I've never really paid any attention to snapdragons before last year. My husband (who is watching GA because of Aaron!) told me that they are his favorite. I was at a garden center and found some rockets that looked really sad and got them on a discount. With no hope - I planted them next to my house in a south face narrow bed a little fertilizer when I planted but really nothing after that. They took a bit but bounced back very nicely. So well in fact that on Dec 12th I still had blooms. I just couldn't make myself pull them and decide to leave them in hopes that they would maybe self seed for this year. A hard freeze finally came and killed them off and then the snow hit. Well - a couple months later the snow is gone and it's starting to get a little warmer. I was looking at the bed yesterday (timing is funny) and what do you know - new growth at the base of every plant! What!!!! Is this normal? Yakima WA zone 6B.

I have that Vivosun heat mat with the thermostat and I really like it! I live in an older house and tend to keep the heat set at 67-68 because my house is such an energy hog. So I use the heat mat to help germinate tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants indoors. I set it at 80°F and it helps speed up germination quite a bit. As soon as everybody’s up and looks good, I turn it off. I live by myself and only start one 72 tray of summer veggies a year (I direct sow squash and cucumbers because I think they do better that way.)

You can use that envolpe the seeds are in to tap them out when planting works pretty good. I have to ware magnifing glasses to plant them tiny seeds.

I hadn't thought about snapdragons for years! I was in the garden area of Wal Mart in January and found 2 inch pots of them. Remembering a video of Laura growing them, I snapped some up. Planted them in a container with - wait for it - Heuchera! I had never seen or heard of Heuchera before this channel. Imagine my surprise when the tag also said "Coral Bells" - now that was a plant I knew about but never grew. Anyway, not sure which type my snapdragons are, just pleased that I am starting my Spring plantings. I am zone 9A (Northeast Florida) and we have highs in the 80s this week!

I have two cucumber and tomatoes growing in a bottles made greenhouse, I saw someone doing it on You Tube so I give it a try and it works, I did the same yesterday with some melon seeds just have to wait to see if they germinate too,have to be clear plastic bottles

Hi Laura! You’ve inspired me to start a lot more flowers and vegetables from seed. I have purchased some grow lights that include a timer and I was wondering how long you keep the lights on? 8 hours? 12? I can’t seem to find a definitive answer anywhere. Thanks for all you do! I love Baker Creek seed packets because they rock the gorgeous glossy color photographs as well as all the excellent germination/ growing/ sprouting data.

Oh, that's interesting that you guys, feel that way about Baker Creek Seed packets. They do have pretty pictures, but I think they are missing key information, like days to maturity. Johnny's is way more informative in my opinion. Johnny's is aimed at professional growers and Baker Creek is more aimed at home gardeners. I think that's the difference between them.
