I think she said they bloom in May and June, so I'm guessing they'd be done by the heat of July. Perhaps look into another variety of if you think these would be done blooming by then. I'm sure there's some flowers you could grow for her

Hi Laura- Beekeeper here- that girl is most certainly a young yellow jacket queen. (wasp) I'm sure your greenhouse is a cozy place for her to overwinter. Only the young queens survive after the nest dies in the fall. They slumber in a sheltered place and await spring- when they can rebuild a small paper nest (alone) lay eggs and then begin to build their empire. Her only job is to survive right now- looks like she woke at the wrong time. I found a black and white queen in my crawl space last week I accidentally awakened. Sad advice- but anytime you see one of these gals, take them out with your shoe. It will save a whole lot of stings in the late summer. Yes, they are pollinators and harmless for most of the season, until late summer/early fall when they become a real problem- for your family and also honeybees. Not a bee- a wasp. Russell may have actually been trying to alert Laura to the wasp danger. Cats are super aware of what’s going on around them. Yes, please check all of the tables for wasp nests to avert any more unwanted encounters. 🍀

Ranunculus is one of my favorite flowers to design with. The many different colors, the lasting quality, and the elegance it brings to a cut flower arrangement. ♡ I have never grown my own, but you make it seem so easy that I may have to try. Ranunculus were my mom's favorite flower but she couldn't have them (way back when) because winters in Virginia were too cold. When my parents moved to CA, it was the first thing she put in the backyard! She would be thrilled you were starting them inside. I can’t believe you’re talking about this particular flower! Yesterday I bought some pink ranunculus at the nursery in the town I’m moving into soon here in central Calif/zone 9a. I just wanted to see what’s in bloom in January. And then I couldn’t help myself and bought three plants that matched together nicely like Laura would do and bought a pot to put them in plus soil. But I still live in my apartment and I really don’t have any place to put it but I couldn’t help myself.

Ranunculus are one of my favorites! Would love to see all of your raised beds full of them!! I actually remembered to put up some (small caterpillar) hoops last fall so I can get them out, protected earlier this spring. It will be an experiment since i have never been organized enough to remember to get the hoops in before the ground freezes! I usually plant my dahlias out as the ranunculus are slowing down, in the same bed. The tuber sprouts are short at first and as the weather warms the dahlias take off and the ranuncs go to sleep. My corms have had all summer to rest and energize and I pull them out once i have cut back my dahlias. Works as a space saver for me. So glad to see all the glorious color from previous years, make me want to pre sprout...must. be. patient!! 😛

I bought corms in Jan 22. Life happened & I never got them planted. While waiting for this year's order I decided to take a look at them. Like you said, they always look dead anyway. I decided to pre-sprout them & see what happens. No way to know for sure yet, but I have high hopes. They plumped up well. Thanks to your videos I'm a lot better at "let's see".

@@susanhorn3910 I started presprouting mine January 25th, potted them up a couple days later, let them grow under grow lights until I planted them into a patio raised garden bed on March 14th (it was a random warm week in the 40s and 50s which ended up being perfect timing). I kept the bed covered in plastic since we still had regular snow and freezing weather except on the occasional warm or sunny day. A few days it was extremely cold (in the teens) so I covered the plants in a bedsheet as a frost cloth, then covered the whole bed in plastic... anemones bloom first so I had my first anemones at the very beginning of May and my first ranunculus bloom May 10th. This year I am going to delay the presprout until February, because even though I had growlights on the plants, they still got quite leggy and they definitely did not enjoy being inside those first few months... they really put on leafy growth when you get them outside in the cool weather, so I'm going to have them inside less and see how they go. Both the ranunculus and anemones were done by end of May because our temps jumped from 50s-60s to 80s almost immediately and stayed there for the several following months..i definitely would have had more blooms if we had a proper spring! Im in central Illinois if that's helpful

Yeah it's currently raining and in the 40s here, which makes me feel like I can act like I'm in a warmer zone and get going on planting now..i just planted sweet peas in nursery containers and set them outside in a makeshift low tunnel I have... just an experiment to see how they go since it's so warm! I was thinking of doing the same with ranunculus to see if i can get earlier blooms with less effort. Ranunculus are so worth it, they are stunning as a cut flower! I got a 2 week vase life on most of them! Anemones too are so beautiful. They're all my favorites only second to dahlias!

As for Ranuculas, they are a big 0 for me. I soaked and planted 20 corms. 4 grew, only 1 bloomed. The ones in the ground never grew, planted late April. They don’t like 7a here.

This will be my fourth year of growing ranunculus and anemones in zone 5a, southern Wisconsin. I begin the process of soaking in late February. After soaking, I put them in moistened soil in 50 or 72 cell packs. I put them in the basement for about 2 weeks until I see sprouts. I take the flats outside on the front porch, covering them as needed. If I can get into the ground mid March ( depends if the ground is frozen or not), I use the same tunnels as you used last year and cover. I love sharing the blooms and got a very nice thank you from our vet's office last year. They are definitely worth the work!

Zone 8b, I no longer soak them. I direct sow them in March and PNW rain takes care of plumping them and by early summer, I start getting blooms. Live in Seattle. Due to so much rain, soaking is not needed.

Oh my gosh, you just rocked my world!! We live in HOT, HOT desert, transplants from the midwest. OMGosh , Laura- feeling your bee sting pain!!! Bless your heart! I don't know what day you took that video but two days ago I put my foot in a boot that had been sitting outside...temp was in the low 50's here in Seattle.... all of a sudden I had excruciating pain on the top of my foot! I thought it was a thorn or some such thing, so I took the boot off and out flew a yellow jacket or wasp! OM LORD, the darn thing was mad! I loved the fact that your vid kept rolling!! Ive had the same thing happen. I wasnt planting them out early enough. They really do shut down once the weather gets warm. I'm going to try tough love this year and put them out when it its colder (once they are hardened off) Good luck!

You inspired me to try ranunculus ONE LAST TIME. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I continue to see your flowers and long for that beautiful bed of bouquets. I live in Connecticut zone 5b and our temperatures fluctuate so rapidly it’s always been a fail, one day it’s 80 then dips to freezing at night. So keeping them at a constant 40 to 60 degrees is a challenge. Last year I attempted them in pots so I could move them if needed. Of 200 corms, I got one tiny little bloom. This year I’m going to try them in a raised bed, with hoops. Fingers crossed this works because if not, I will accept the defeat.

Crazy suggestion that really works for bee stings, I put a copper Penny on the site ASAP then cross with 2 bandages. 5 minutes later you will barely now you have been stung. Love, love, love your videos and social media posts. Thanks

I dug mine up last season, shook off the dirt and threw them under my potting bench. Completely forgot all about them. I brushed them off, soaked them and they're already sprouting. So much easier than overwintering Dahlias!

Oh Laura- that was a wasp! Hope you’re doing ok? Cheddar was like “don’t you hurt my Mama!” ❤️ The ranunculus is one of my favs! So soft and beautifully colored.

Thanks for the inspiration, Laura. I'm a longtime gardener, but a first time ranunculus grower. My order has shipped and could arrive today. It's exciting to try something new, and I can't wait!

Oohhhh Laura, I am so sorry for the bee/wasp sting. That was not nice!! Thank you for the ranunculus video. I am in zone 9a and growing them is tougher here because of our heat. So I planted them in December and we will see what happens. I am going to plant in the fall as you suggested this year. I have never seen their blooms in person so fingers crossed! I did not realize they were perennial here so thank you for that info.

I feel much better about my ranuculas after seeing your dried up corums. I bought plants at Lowes last Spring in the clearance area for .50 each 4 pack. I dried them and ordered some new ones. Crossing my fingers!

I haven’t had much luck with them in Michigan-only about a third of mine bloom. I think we go from cold wet spring to summer too fast. Love seeing yours look so beautiful every year. 😊

Sorry about the wasp sting! 😖 How many times do you water them in the trays and do the trays have drain holes? Do they stay on the damp side or dry? Thank you I been anticipating this video! Going to plant my first ranunculus 💐! Super EXCITED!
