You saying to try the old seeds has blessed me. About 5 yrs ago I got a milk crate of mason jars filled with different marigolds and wild flowers. they were in a back corner of the barn under a bunc hof gardening stuff. The couple had past 10 years prior and due to health did not farm for years before that..... As of this spring I now have those marigolds popping up through out my garden. I do not have my own words for the feeling so I will use yours.. "It warms my heart" beyond any explanation I could give.

I was feeling rather disheartened about my garden last week. I've been sick multiple times at rather important times this past spring which has put me behind in both seed starting and garden bed making, but yesterday when I was home alone on mother's day because of the nasty cold I have, I got outside to get some vitamins D & G (Vitamin Garden, according to Gardener's World 😉) and the 3 or so hours I spent planting new things, replanting things the chickens dug up, and replanning spaces that I had other plans for but the seeds never came up, my sadness over what wasn't changed into hope for what could be. ❤️😊 Just get outside, it will change you in more ways than you know!

We're in South Africa and winter is almost here. Our family was struck down with "the" virus. Hubby and I got pneumonia and ended up in hospital. We knew time was running out on planting winter crop. As soon as we got home we planted as the beds were prepped. 2 weeks later and we have a surprise garden as we can't remember what we planted ☺... everything is growing. Some of our seeds were older and everything germinated. Jess we still love this journey with Roots and Refuge, it's awesone seeing your farm grow! Lots of love 🤗❤🌻

I want more and since I am caught up, I just listen to the current episode probably 10-20 times waiting till the next episodd 2. I love y’all. I want to support y’all. I wish I could just send you a check to show how much I value the work y’all are doing but I until I strike it rich, rewatching videos and hoping that translates to ad revenue will have to do. 3. Y’all are in our zone (for what it’s worth) and have a very similar growing season (3/10-11/15) and we are starting our first garden season on our new property. Thanks so much Jess for talking about the GreenStalk Mother's Day sale! I lucked out! I got another by accident and they were very nice and let me keep it! I am twice blessed with GreenStalk planters. The one I ordered came on Saturday and another one just showed up today, Monday! I already have the one I got on Saturday planted with strawberries! Thanks to you and of course God! It's so fun to watch you talking about what you're planting in the garden. I think it was Paul Gautschi, the guy that does the wood chip gardening is the one that talked that Nature is modest and she wants to be covered up. He was inspired by God in that nature usually covers herself. That was so fun to watch you plant! I'm going to plant red noodle beans for the first time this year. This was so fun to watch! Thanks Jess!

I have never followed the depth suggested on the pack. I have followed Paul’s theory from Back to Eden gardening. He says plant the seed the depth of the seed. Less struggles for the seed to emerge. Always had great success with that method. He also says to cover the earth or she will do it for you. Let’s talk about the auger. I have used one for the last several years. My son bought a cement drill for me. Slower gears no kick back. It can snap your wrists if your not careful. It made planting so much faster. I transplant into solo cups. My bit is 3” auger. You drill and drop. So quick. It’s a life changer compared to how I use to plant. I always needed help now I plant alone. It’s great.

Girl, you're an angel. You did a vid recently and it really inspired me. I've been growing my own (urban farming) for over 7yrs and have tons of experience now that I've got to place of 'most lessons' learnt via making mistakes. I always wanted to start a gardening project and was not confident, then just approached the head of our school and offered her a 4 week programme for parents (I typed it out and really encouraged it). I start on Thursday and we have some volunteers that will support in revamping the amazing conservation area and garden so the school can eventually use the food in the school Kitchen and have some edibles for the children while they are playing in the playground. You did that! Thanks love ❤️❤️❤️🚸

THANK YOU for always sharing your experience as well as encouraging others to try new things. In addition, you aren’t afraid to tell us that things don’t always work out perfectly for you either. For many of us, you are someone to lookup to and instead of making us feel like you are immune to things not working out every time, you show us that it’s ok to “fail” and that it’s not truly a failure as long as you learn from it; “fail forward”. Love, hugs, & blessings. ~Kristin PS I think you guys should totally look into trying quail (specifically coturnix). They are super under-rated for self-sufficiency! I would love to chat with you about them! We raise, breed, & ship all across the US and love them so much!

I still get cold when the air in our house is below 76 degrees! But, when I was in high school, we lived in Wichita, Kansas, and the last winter we were there, it was 15 below zero when we moved, and there was 2.5 feet of snow on the ground -- back in the early 1960's! Now, that's der still.

I’m trying hard not to be envious of your space because I will never have it. I have 3 2x8 beds and 2 of them have trellises. I am very restricted in what I have room to grow. Even so, it has been such a joy to have kale and collards in the winter, and sugar peas. I’ll have one trellis devoted to my beloved Chocolate Sprinkles cherry tomatoes, the other will host one beefsteak tomato, and cukes. The squash and zucchini get all of the third bed so the can be happy sprawling. Eggplants and peppers are sharing with tomatoes. This will be a better year! I found space in ground for okra and chose Clemson spineless since the Alabama Red didn’t like my grow bags. Oh, and the green stalk is presenting me with THE sweetest strawberries I’ve ever tasted. I’ll fill it with lettuce and collards in the fall. Thanks so much for your encouragement, Jess!

Where I live, due to climate and types of native plants, no dig doesn't work. I have to do an initial dig and then it's no dig after that. If there's no rhizome barrier or weeding isn't done enough, the garden beds at the edges will have to be redone after several years. Those augers for the drill come in various sizes. They are good for making a "piolet hole" for driving in posts. (driving in posts straight is difficult in rocky soil)

I woke up to a bit of snow on the ground, and it's 0 right now. A snowy/rainy mix happening outside. It's suppose to warm up again and be 20 Celsius by Monday. I need to watch the night time temperatures and put anything I've bought to plant in the garage. I have two trees and some other plants inside. I don't bother planting until after the 25 of May. So my kitchen is full of seedlings and hanging baskets and other plants waiting to get outside. We actually have rattle snakes in southern Alberta, very windy, hot and dry down there, closer to Montana. I'm in Central Alberta 45 minutes away from the Rockies. Just the common garden snake here. I've yet to see one on our land.

Your garden is so lovely. Thanks for sharing, it's very inspiring. My family and I have also started a small backyard garden. We're learning how to homecan, seed save, make compost, and preserve what we grow. Every penny saved helps. Less than 2 years in our new home and we've completely transformed the backyard. We are beginner gardeners, growing and learning along the way. Recently I started a gardening channel to help encourage others to begin growing as well. No time better than now to learn self sufficiency. Thanks again for sharing, your channel helps me stay inspired and motivated to grow. God bless!

Jess, I tried growing my summer squash vertically last year for the first time and it seemed to drastically deter the squash bugs. I just put a strong stake in the ground and direct sowing my squash seeds a couple inches from the stake. Then continue to tie the squash vine to the stake as the plant grows and prune the leaves as it grows. Sort of like "main-lining" a tomato plant.

Hahaha hello frost tender flower from this cold hardy Canadian 👋. It’s -3°c and snowing here currently. I’m growing both of those melons for the first time this year way up here in northern Alberta, we don’t usually have a very long season. The leopard one sounds interesting. I have high hopes for those little melons. Loving the garden space, great job to everyone!

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos and advice. Last year I planted my first garden and it didn't do too well. The only thing we harvested was tomatoes. This year, our garden is doing 10000x better because of all of the tips and tricks I've gotten from you.

I was going to suggest a few videos ago to put some wind chimes around the new green house. But in today's video I think I heard some in the background.

I'm starting new no-dig beds this year at a new house. Everything looks rough and puny right now. Crossing my fingers until the plants start to take off! Seeing your progress is encouraging.

I planted my tomatoes yesterday. They looked so nice. This afternoon, a naughty hen dug half of them up looking for worms. More tomato planting tomorrow

I free range my chickens too so we had to make covers to go over our raised beds so the chickens couldn't get to our garden boxes.

I always seem to find new varieties that I want to try on each of these videos! 🌱I cannot wait to see your lush and beautiful garden. I am in Canada so its typically cool but its now hitting 16-22 Celsius so now I am out in the garden daily or more than once a day (planting, prepping new spaces, checking my plants, hardening off and of course filming content for my channel) I am not a huge fan of snakes in general (deathly snakes most definitely NOT) BUT honestly I'd take on the snakes versus the cold/heavy snow. Can't complain though it's warm enough to be outside in just a t-shirt which makes my heart happy. I love all the content that has been coming so frequently, I keep my eye on my notifications to see your videos. 🌻 Your farm is coming together beautifully and I love the lights on the archway trellises! Have a fantastic day Jess and fam❤

North Texas: I was watering as we are in the 90's this week and saw my first 2 squash bugs come up as I watered. I took care of them but am keeping an eye on everything! :)

I'm so excited by the greenstalk planters. Between your channel and a couple others, it motivated me to attempt gardening again after my abysmal fail last year using grow bags. I got the original planter and have a variety of flowers and veggies in it. Then I just ordered a second one because of their mother's day sale thanks to one of your recent videos and got some strawberries and raspberries from Stark Bros. to put in the new one. If this year goes as well as I'm hoping, I'll just keep ordering planters during mother's day (since that seems to be a pretty good deal) each year until I have as many as I can handle. So thanks for the motivation!
