Planting TOMATO SLICE To Grow TOMATOES Time-lapse

This is an easy way to plant tomato plants in your own garden in spring.
Growing a tomato plant from a tomato slice was one of the first growing videos i made almost 2 years ago so naturally i had to make one all the way to fruit :)
It got a bit out of control though. My plan was not to prune it at all and just let it grow however it wanted to. But that was a bad idea, it got waay to big for its pot and reaching all the way to the ceiling. And that's probably why i had trouble pollinating the flowers. Happy it made a few tomatoes at least. Next time i do tomato i will prune to make it more bushy.

I had the same thought…I was growing small tomatoes myself when I saw the first video…they grow so tall but I had to move them when they made flowers and the flowers just died without making any fruits and then the plants died too…so at least this video showed me how would they look like…thanks

For anyone wondering: The plant is left inside with very little light so the plant is extremely leggy, thin and fragile. The pot is too small for a plant that size (plus planter probably didn't fertilize the plant), thus there was not enough nutrition nor water for the plant to keep all or most of the tomatoes. The plant gave all its energy to the few tomatoes it had on the plant to ensure it had off-springs. Clearly, the plant gave up putting energy into its leaves before letting the few tomatoes die. This was a time lapse of an unhealthy tomato plant but it shows you the process of its growth.

@@Bill-lt5qf Yes, Etiolation in plants is a natural phenomenon and is simply a plant’s way of reaching for a light source. If you have ever started seeds without sufficient lighting, then you have seen how the seedlings grow rather spindly with a long, abnormally thin, pale stem. This is an example of etiolation in plants. We generally know it as plant legginess. Etiolation is the result of hormones called auxins. Auxins are transported from the actively growing tip of the plant downwards, resulting in the suppression of lateral buds. They stimulate proton pumps in the cell wall which, in turn, increases the acidity of the wall and triggers expansin, an enzyme that weakens the cell wall. While etiolation increases the chances that a plant will reach the light, it results in less than desirable symptoms. Etiolation plant problems such as abnormal lengthening of stems and leaves, weakened cell walls, elongated internodes with fewer leaves, and chlorosis may all occur.

For those who think this is a happy tomato plant: the stem is incredibly thin because the grow light used for these videos isn't strong enough for the plant. This plant did not fruit very well and it stayed very thin and leggy. Which is totally fine to just watch a plant grow, but rest assured, this would not have survived outside. Tomatoes require at minimum, 40 watts of light per square foot while growing inside. Most people spend the $$ and put a 250-450+ watt light over a tray of tomato seedlings. I've made the mistake of low watt grow lights recently, and my plants looked similar to this. Very soft, weak, lanky stems. Cool video though!

I was a heirloom tomato farmer for a few years with over 15 different variety’s… They grow pretty fast. If you want more fruit make sure to grow them pretty close to each other(about 12in) in the biggest pots you can if not directly in soil. With as much sun as possible.

@@dodo2829 You want a decent grow light or even several. Normal indoor lighting won't do. Without sufficient light the seedlings will become too leggy or stretched out and you might get other problems. If they're overwatered, or the top layer of the potting mix stays too damp because of poor drainage or insufficient light the plants can also damp off or get root rot. I use two of the four-foot t12 flourescent fixtures that you can find in your local hardware store. each with two led grow bulbs and I have the little seedlings up on a table so they can be closer to the light. Before I rigged up the extra lighting I was having trouble with seedlings dying off or stretching out a few days after germinating. You can use other types of bulbs and fixtures too but you probably want to buy bulbs marketed as "grow lights". Some light fixtures might require self assembly depending on what you buy. Also bear in mind, that just because it looks bright to you doesn't mean it's bright enough for the plant. Especially if it's the sort with high light requirements such as tomatoes, peppers, basil or other meditteranean herbs.

If you want your tomato plant to grow like a tight, compromised bush instead of a tree-like plant, just regulary snap some of its baby stems (once it's tall enough). The plant will react with more bushy growth and even more fruit. Also make sure you water it before it completely dries out. Tomatos consist manly of water - the plant will naturally need a lot of it in order to pruduce them. Tomato plants are also very good against mosquitos, for they very much disklike the leafs' smell. (As are e.g. Lavender, Incense plants, Basil, Mint, ect.)

You were seeing it become dehydrated prior to being watered again. Tomato plants are an average gardener's biggest light, nutrient, and water suck. This plant went from crispy to hydrated, often.

So long as you're fertilizing pretty frequently it can get that big in an even smaller pot. It depends on the type of plant tbh. This looks like an indeterminate variety which is more of a vine type of plant while determinate ones are typically more like bushes. It also looks a little leggy imo, but I could definitely just be wrong lol

@@Boxlapse I found that using a paintbrush and lightly brushing the pollen from each flower onto each other works incredibly well, however I do realise that your content seems to not show any human interaction (e.g. hands on screen etc) so not sure if that's something you would want to do :) anyways, great video!

@@Boxlapse I use q-tips, works like a charm. Get some Everglades Tomatoes, it's a cherry tomato that grows like a weed, it's actually hard to kill and grows very tomatoes fast. It does require lots of pruning thoughor it'll take over an 8x8 area.

It needs a full sun location and good watering. Also some support to grow big. Another issue is that hybrid tomatoes will not produce the same tomato when planted. But generally you are right, tomato is not that hard.
