@@villeneuve27rosso35 purtroppo per te non e' così perché ci sono casi in cui la versione dell'interprete straniero vendette molto più di quella del cantante italiano. Uno dei tanti esempi potrebbe essere "Invece no", nella versione di Petula Clark giunse in alta classifica divenendo tra i successi del 65, la versione dell'italiana Betty Curtis non entro' in classifica...Non e' dunque per discriminare, e' solo per questione di gusto, la bellezza di una canzone dipende da un mix di elementi tra cui l'arrangiamento e in questo caso e' migliore la versione della Caselli, almeno per me e di quanti comprarono il vinile, poi ognuno giustamente ha i suoi gusti.

I met him in 1998 and we spent a half day together (we were no alone unfortunately :-)) He was the most charismatic man I have ever met. Our mutual friends said that he spoke a little Italian because of the songs he sang, he always wanted to know the meaning of every word. And it seems he knew the lyrics by heart.

AWW - I miss Gene so much, great to have this old footage. He came to England often and stayed at the hotel where I worked, so i got to know him quite well. Lovely, lovely guy, polite, friendly funny & very kind. We lost someone very special the day he died. :-( I have an EP of Gene's entitled 'Gene Italiano', which I still enjoy playing.

Wonderful memories for you. I too had Gene Italiano EP, at the end of recording these tracks the musicians stood up and applauded him. They'd never before backed an artist who could do songs in just one take (and in a language foreign to them). Gene had learned and rehearsed... as all professionals should.

In NY area we had Italian radio programming well into the 1970s and Gene's Italian material was heard locally. I think I heard E Se Domani on a jukebox in Wildwood, NJ (Philadelphia crowd--again, lots of Italians). And I bet some of these Italian songs made it to a VERY early music film format called Scopitone--my family was in the coin-op games business and I remember it being demonstrated.

The "side" was that he had better material and better arrangements. Sedaka could say the same. I think that both did their best stuff in Italy because they came at the right moment. Of course only Italians know it because they know the lyrics and can also compare their english sung production.

Straordinario, unico! È stato e sarà per sempre il mio cantante. Amava l' Italia, quì si è sposato con Lynn Gayton, a Ospedaletti e gli piaceva l' amatriciana. Peccato che sia venuto quì fino al 67 e poi quasi più. Nessuno ha cantato come lui " Nessuno mi può giudicare" , "E se domani" , "Quando vedrai la mia ragazza". A lui più che a qualsiasi altro attribuisco il merito del successo di queste canzoni.
